Compiled By
Research & report compiled by H. Sharp. Copyright © 2014 Oceanic Resources International Consultancy JLT.
Overview / Scope of this report
Oceanic Resources International have conducted a salary benchmark study within the logistics industry in the Middle
East region. The aim was to determine detailed information on current remuneration and benefits for a range of
management level positions. The profiles to be researched included the following:
1. Managing Director (ME & another region)
2. Regional HR Director (Based in Dubai)
3. Regional Finance Director (Based in Dubai)
4. Regional Sales & Marketing Director (Based in Dubai)
5. Country Manager UAE
6. Country Manager Saudi Arabia
7. Country Manager Oman
8. Country Manager Qatar
9. General Manager - Oil & Gas (Regional Business Development, Based in Dubai)
10. General Manager – Freight Forwarding (UAE Operations)
The criteria specified were that a minimum of three individuals should be used for comparison purposes against each
profile.
Confidentiality / Accuracy of data
During late February into early March of 2014 data has been compiled from various sources to enable completion of
the study. Every individual approached was informed that a benchmarking study was being undertaken and that
data provided and that each individual would have their identity protected to ensure that there could be no
repercussions related to their current employment. It was also confirmed that following completion of the study
every participant would receive a copy of the findings.
In certain circumstances individuals refused to provide any information for fear of breaching clauses in their
contracts that prevent the disclosure of their package details whereas in some cases we were able to gather
information directly from HR Managers who could provide data for various positions.
In the following pages are the full details related to each position, package breakdown, benefits provided and an
outline of the range of responsibility held by the individuals surveyed. This includes the number of countries under
the persons control, no of staff managed and where possible the turnover of business. Whilst it is not possible to
detail which company each piece of data specifically relates to we can confirm that for the purposes of this study all
of the information has been generated from employees of the following organisations:
Managing Director – Middle East
Each person surveyed is responsible for the entire business in region and every product offering within their
company’s portfolio. Dependant on the organisation this included Freight Forwarding & Customs, 3PL, Contract
Logistics, Transport & Distribution.
One factor to be taken into consideration in this category is the use of agents in certain countries which reduce the
number of direct employees however every individual surveyed has their own operations in multiple GCC countries
to regions as large as over seventy countries.

The following graphs analyse the data based on staff responsibility, number of Countries managed and revenue
responsibility. Each graph indicates the subjects most closely aligned in respect of their responsibility.

Revenue
Of the seven subjects surveyed, three declined to provide details of revenue; one subject has not been included in
the above graph, as their revenue was just under AED 500 Million. The three subjects included on the graph are the
most closely aligned for comparison purposes.
Benefits
Everyone in the category receives return tickets for them and their family to their country of origin once per year.
Only one individual surveyed confirmed Business Class tickets, all others stated the benefit covered only the value of
economy tickets.
Schooling was provided for the children of everyone in the category. Policy varied from company to company with
some covering actuals and some having a maximum benefit per child. From our own experience of employment
contracts in the region we can confirm that the most common practice where schooling is provided is to limit the
benefit to three children up to eighteen years of age.
All receive performance based bonuses which vary considerably making comparison difficult however most are
either a percentage of net profit or a percentage of basic salary if performance KPI’s are met. The potential of 50%
of basic was most common applying to three of the subjects.
Some individuals receive contributions into a pension scheme, where this is applicable it replaces entitlement to end
of service benefits (Gratuity entitlement) which is offered in the ME region.

Conclusions
While collecting and collating the data within this report, it became apparent that the total compensation and
benefits provided to professionals working within the industry are relatively aligned when viewed as a total package.
There are obviously exceptions to every rule and the differences which make comparison difficult or suggest
disparity are around items that can be difficult to quantify such as company provided vehicles which may be of a
higher specification, schooling covered on an actual basis as opposed to within a budgeted amount and of course the
bonus/incentive schemes. From our own experience in the market we can also confirm that in some instances the
benefits offered to employees have been in place for many years dating back to when the Middle East was
considered a hardship posting. Whilst this assessment is still applied to parts of the GCC is definitely does not apply
to all and in response companies entering the market no longer feel the need to offer some of the nicer benefits
which more often than not are viewed as luxuries of the past.
Bonus potential appeared to vary considerably but as with anything the devil is in the detail, high bonus potential is
nothing if the targets and measures are unrealistic. In this regard the findings were extremely varied with some
participants suggesting their bonus was virtually guaranteed and part of their expected remuneration whilst others
stated it was something that they really do treat as a bonus.
The one aspect that should cause concern to employers is where an individual is given responsibility for multiple
countries. Our findings highlight that whilst some country managers are given responsibility for multiple countries,
in some instances they hold almost as much responsibility as Regional Management within other organisations
which is not does not always appear to be recognised within their package.
Obviously each organisation has their own structures however if you reach the conclusion that an individual has
been given greater responsibility because they are deemed competent and capable enough to handle it, it is not
unreasonable to also suggest that such an individual would be someone that the organisation would wish to retain.
Should that be the case then it is fair to expect a package to represent the responsibility and not the job title.

Salary Benchmark Survey by Oceanic Resources International

  • 1. SALARY BENCHMARK STUDY Compiled By Research & report compiled by H. Sharp. Copyright © 2014 Oceanic Resources International Consultancy JLT.
  • 2. Overview / Scope of this report Oceanic Resources International have conducted a salary benchmark study within the logistics industry in the Middle East region. The aim was to determine detailed information on current remuneration and benefits for a range of management level positions. The profiles to be researched included the following: 1. Managing Director (ME & another region) 2. Regional HR Director (Based in Dubai) 3. Regional Finance Director (Based in Dubai) 4. Regional Sales & Marketing Director (Based in Dubai) 5. Country Manager UAE 6. Country Manager Saudi Arabia 7. Country Manager Oman 8. Country Manager Qatar 9. General Manager - Oil & Gas (Regional Business Development, Based in Dubai) 10. General Manager – Freight Forwarding (UAE Operations) The criteria specified were that a minimum of three individuals should be used for comparison purposes against each profile.
  • 3. Confidentiality / Accuracy of data During late February into early March of 2014 data has been compiled from various sources to enable completion of the study. Every individual approached was informed that a benchmarking study was being undertaken and that data provided and that each individual would have their identity protected to ensure that there could be no repercussions related to their current employment. It was also confirmed that following completion of the study every participant would receive a copy of the findings. In certain circumstances individuals refused to provide any information for fear of breaching clauses in their contracts that prevent the disclosure of their package details whereas in some cases we were able to gather information directly from HR Managers who could provide data for various positions. In the following pages are the full details related to each position, package breakdown, benefits provided and an outline of the range of responsibility held by the individuals surveyed. This includes the number of countries under the persons control, no of staff managed and where possible the turnover of business. Whilst it is not possible to detail which company each piece of data specifically relates to we can confirm that for the purposes of this study all of the information has been generated from employees of the following organisations:
  • 4. Managing Director – Middle East Each person surveyed is responsible for the entire business in region and every product offering within their company’s portfolio. Dependant on the organisation this included Freight Forwarding & Customs, 3PL, Contract Logistics, Transport & Distribution. One factor to be taken into consideration in this category is the use of agents in certain countries which reduce the number of direct employees however every individual surveyed has their own operations in multiple GCC countries to regions as large as over seventy countries. * 1.00 in Transportation Allowance denotes vehicle provided The following graphs analyse the data based on staff responsibility, number of Countries managed and revenue responsibility. • 6. Revenue Of the seven subjects surveyed, three declined to provide details of revenue; one subject has not been included in the above graph, as their revenue was just under AED 500 Million. The three subjects included on the graph are the most closely aligned for comparison purposes. Benefits Everyone in the category receives return tickets for them and their family to their country of origin once per year. Only one individual surveyed confirmed Business Class tickets, all others stated the benefit covered only the value of economy tickets. Schooling was provided for the children of everyone in the category. Policy varied from company to company with some covering actuals and some having a maximum benefit per child. From our own experience of employment contracts in the region we can confirm that the most common practice where schooling is provided is to limit the benefit to three children up to eighteen years of age. All receive performance based bonuses which vary considerably making comparison difficult however most are either a percentage of net profit or a percentage of basic salary if performance KPI’s are met. The potential of 50% of basic was most common applying to three of the subjects. Some individuals receive contributions into a pension scheme, where this is applicable it replaces entitlement to end of service benefits (Gratuity entitlement) which is offered in the ME region. 0.00 20,000.00 40,000.00 60,000.00 80,000.00 100,000.00 120,000.00 140,000.00 160,000.00 180,000.00 200,000.00 220,000.00 240,000.00 260,000.00 280,000.00 300,000.00 Total Package Basic Salary Housing Allowance Transportation Allowance* 209,190.00 161,480.00 33,030.00 14,680.00 116,473.00 90,810.00 17,767.00 7,896.00 101,713.00 72,713.00 25,000.00 4,000.00 Subject 1 Subject 2 Subject 3 Monthly Salary in AED Salary Breakdown AED 1.8 to 3.5 Billion

One individual surveyed received bonus/commission based on monthly performance; to enable a more accurate comparison we have taken a low (virtually guaranteed) amount and included this into the basic salary. • 26. Conclusions While collecting and collating the data within this report, it became apparent that the total compensation and benefits provided to professionals working within the industry are relatively aligned when viewed as a total package. There are obviously exceptions to every rule and the differences which make comparison difficult or suggest disparity are around items that can be difficult to quantify such as company provided vehicles which may be of a higher specification, schooling covered on an actual basis as opposed to within a budgeted amount and of course the bonus/incentive schemes. From our own experience in the market we can also confirm that in some instances the benefits offered to employees have been in place for many years dating back to when the Middle East was considered a hardship posting. Whilst this assessment is still applied to parts of the GCC is definitely does not apply to all and in response companies entering the market no longer feel the need to offer some of the nicer benefits which more often than not are viewed as luxuries of the past. Bonus potential appeared to vary considerably but as with anything the devil is in the detail, high bonus potential is nothing if the targets and measures are unrealistic. In this regard the findings were extremely varied with some participants suggesting their bonus was virtually guaranteed and part of their expected remuneration whilst others stated it was something that they really do treat as a bonus. The one aspect that should cause concern to employers is where an individual is given responsibility for multiple countries. Our findings highlight that whilst some country managers are given responsibility for multiple countries, in some instances they hold almost as much responsibility as Regional Management within other organisations which is not does not always appear to be recognised within their package. Obviously each organisation has their own structures however if you reach the conclusion that an individual has been given greater responsibility because they are deemed competent and capable enough to handle it, it is not unreasonable to also suggest that such an individual would be someone that the organisation would wish to retain. Should that be the case then it is fair to expect a package to represent the responsibility and not the job title.
