4. • Η Σελήνη , σύμφωνα με την θεογονία του
Ησιόδου, είναι η κόρη του Τιτάνα Υπερίωνα
και της Τιτανίδας Θείας.
Είναι αδελφή της Ηούς (Αυγής) και του Ήλιου
ο οποίος την φωτίζει πάντα φανερώνοντας
την αδελφική του αγάπη.

6. • Η Σελήνη παρίσταται συνήθως είτε να
ιππεύει στο πλάι έναν ίππο είτε να οδηγεί
ένα άρμα από ένα ζευγάρι δυνατών αλόγων
(ή ταύρων).
7. • Η Σελήνια σφαίρα της ή η ημισέληνής της
παρίσταται συνήθως είτε ως στέμμα στο
κεφάλι της είτε ως μια ανυψωμένη πτυχή της
λαμπερής της κάπας. Αρκετοί μύθοι την
θέλουν να οδηγεί ένα κοπάδι από ταύρους
και γι' αυτό και παρομοιάζουν την ημισέληνό
της με τα κέρατα του ταύρου.

9. • Η Σελήνη είναι η θεά του Φεγγαριού, η θεά
της Νύχτας και η θεά των Μηνών. Αρκετές
φορές την συγχέουν είτε με την θεά Άρτεμη,
είτε με την θεά Ήρα, είτε με την Πασιφάη, είτε
με την Ειλειθυία, είτε με την Αριάδνη είτε
τέλος με την Εκάτη. Οι αρχαίοι Έλληνες
μετρούσαν τον χρόνο με τους κύκλους του
φεγγαριού, με τον σεληνιακό μήνα, τον
οποίο διαιρούσαν σε τρία δεκαήμερα
ανάλογα με το πόσο γεμάτη ή άδεια ήταν η
Σελήνη.

11. • Έτσι κατά το πρώτο δεκαήμερο το φεγγάρι
γεμίζει, κατά το δεύτερο βρίσκεται στο
μέγιστο της φωτεινότητάς του και κατά το
τρίτο αδειάζει γι' αυτό και την θεωρούσαν θεά
των Μηνών. Επίσης θεωρούσαν ότι την
νύχτα που η θεά έβγαινε οδηγώντας το άρμα
της έτρεφε την φύση και όταν είχε
πανσέληνο η Σελήνη λουζόταν στα νερά του
Ωκεανού, ο οποίος την έκανε ακόμη πιο
λαμπερή.

13. • Ο μεγάλος της έρωτας είναι ένα όμορφο
αγόρι, ο βοσκός και πρίγκιπας Ενδυμίων, ο
οποίος κέρδισε την αιώνια νεότητα και
αθανασία από τον Δία μπαίνοντας σε μία
κατάσταση αιώνιου ύπνου, σε μία σπηλιά
του όρους Λάτμο. Εκεί κατέβηκε για να τον
συναντήσει η Σελήνη και πέρασε μαζί του το
βράδυ. Από τον Ενδυμύωνα απέκτησε
πενήντα παιδιά, του πενήντα μήνες (κάθε
πενήντα μήνες, δηλαδή τέσσερα χρόνια,
γινότανε η Ολυμπιάδα).

15. • Από τον Δία απέκτησε την θεά Πανδία
(παν θεία) και την Έρσα (Δροσιά).
Ακόμη παιδιά της ήταν, όπως μερικοί
λένε και οι ώρες (εποχές).
