3. The Lewis and Clark Expedition, also
known as the Corps of
Discovery Expedition, was the first
American expedition to cross what is
now the western portion of the
United States, departing in May, 1804
from St. Louis on the Mississippi
River, making their way westward
through the continental divide to the
Pacific coast.

4. Thomas Jefferson was the
one, who sent those two
army captains to Louisiana

9. On November 7. 1805 Lewis and Clark
reached the Pacific Ocean

10. They returned to St. Louis on
September 23, 1806.

11. They justified the possibility to travel
west as far as the Pacific Ocean by
land.

12. As a result, pioneers began moving
westward to the Pacific coast.

13. Although the expedition did make
notable contributions
to science, scientific research itself
was not the main goal of the mission
