Accommodation
For 2013 all students will be fully residential in private single or twin rooms in Wycliffe Hall
of the University of Oxford. This exceptional location is right on the doorstep of the famous
University Parks recreational grounds and less than 5 minutes walk from Oxford City center.
Facilities at Wycliffe Hall include, modern teaching facilities on-site, fast Wi-Fi connectivity,
use of the private college gardens, lecture halls, quiet study rooms and college common
rooms. All meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) are taken in the college dinning hall and are
included in the course fee. Great facilities, a central location, and the friendly atmosphere of
Wycliffe Hall make Oxford Regis a great place to study and make new friends this summer.

English Language
At Oxford Regis we welcome both English learners and improvers and our English Language
Course is desined for non-native speakers of English. The dedicated English Language
course is taught in small-groups and focuses on two main areas: listening and speaking,
with an emphasis on confidence in spoken English. English idioms are studied as part of
listening exercises and pronunciation is practiced with native English speakers as part of our
speaking practice. By the end of the course students should have “found their feet” and will
find it “plain sailing” to correctly pronounce “sheep” and “ship”. Practice with native speakers
is the key to using the English language fluently and correctly.

University Preparation
This course is designed for students hoping to apply to Oxford or Cambridge Universities,
or anyone thinking of applying to a UK university. The course aims to explain the process
of applying to a UK university, guide students in their choices and application, and build
confidence in a university setting. The course does not intend to repeatedly drill students
with answers for their Oxbridge interview, but instead informs the student and builds their
confidence. The course covers the following aspects: subject choice and career choice,
college choice, application procedure, personal statement, and interview preparation.

Business & Economics
The course covers the keys aspects of microeconomics, macroeconomics and business
principles. These ideas are strongly re-enforced with numerous real-life case studies of
well-known businesses and brands. Key components of the syllabus include: markets,
production, cost, efficiency, supply & demand, market failure, growth & business cycle.
During case studies, students have the opportunity to tackle real-life business problems
and present their solutions to the class by taking on the role of an external consultant.

Team Building
Team building activities draws on individual and team learning, in order to teach valuable
life skills. Learning to manage change, work in a team, good communication, and getting
the job done properly and on time are skills needed in all aspects of life. The team building
workshop aims to teach these skills with a number of group activities that require all of
these skills combined. Team building tasks teach students the importance of teamwork, but
also show how to analyse a problem and constructively solve it.

Leadership & Management
The easiest way to distinguish between leadership and management is that management
is mostly about processes, whereas leadership is mostly about behaviour. We aim to teach
students good management, while growing and encouraging personal leadership and
confidence. This workshop covers key aspects of organisation, leading, motivation, and
positive reinforcement. Case studies are used as a tool for students to develop and test
effective management strategies. Numerous group activities and practical problems are
used to develop leadership, teamwork, problem solving skills and confidence.

Public Speaking & Debate
This course is designed to build students confidence in public speaking and being the focus
of a groups attention. This work is consolidated by listening to some of the most famous
speakers and speeches of the past 100 years and analysing their qualities. Practical work
to build the student’s confidence include reading unfamiliar text out loud to a group,
preparing and presenting a speech and taking part in class debate competitions. Debate
topics may range from topics such as ‘school hours are not long enough’, to ‘do violent video
games and movies have a negative effect on children?’.

All cultural activities and day-trips are included in the course fee, as well as a full social programme.

  • 2. R D RE FO OXFORD REGIS GI OX S STUDENT INFORMATION OL . . SUM M O ER SC H Oxford Regis Summer School specialises in providing international summer programmes for students aged 14 - 20 years old, entirely residential within the Colleges and Halls of Oxford University. Course Information Subjects Each student chooses one CORE SUBJECT, plus one WORKSHOP SUBJECT, in addition to social activities and cultural day-trips. Core subjects are classroom-based, while workshops are activity-based with lots of student interaction. Core Subjects (20 hours) Workshops Subjects (20 hours) English Language Team Building University Preparation Leadership & Management Business & Economics Public Speaking & Debate Course Dates / Student Age This 2-week programme runs from Sunday 14 July 2013 - Saturday 27 July 2013 and is open to students aged 14 - 20 years old. Accommodation For 2013 all students will be fully residential in private single or twin rooms in Wycliffe Hall of the University of Oxford. This exceptional location is right on the doorstep of the famous University Parks recreational grounds and less than 5 minutes walk from Oxford City center. Facilities at Wycliffe Hall include, modern teaching facilities on-site, fast Wi-Fi connectivity, use of the private college gardens, lecture halls, quiet study rooms and college common rooms. All meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) are taken in the college dinning hall and are included in the course fee. Great facilities, a central location, and the friendly atmosphere of Wycliffe Hall make Oxford Regis a great place to study and make new friends this summer. English Language At Oxford Regis we welcome both English learners and improvers and our English Language Course is desined for non-native speakers of English. The dedicated English Language course is taught in small-groups and focuses on two main areas: listening and speaking, with an emphasis on confidence in spoken English. English idioms are studied as part of listening exercises and pronunciation is practiced with native English speakers as part of our speaking practice. By the end of the course students should have “found their feet” and will find it “plain sailing” to correctly pronounce “sheep” and “ship”. Practice with native speakers is the key to using the English language fluently and correctly. University Preparation This course is designed for students hoping to apply to Oxford or Cambridge Universities, or anyone thinking of applying to a UK university. The course aims to explain the process of applying to a UK university, guide students in their choices and application, and build confidence in a university setting. The course does not intend to repeatedly drill students with answers for their Oxbridge interview, but instead informs the student and builds their confidence. The course covers the following aspects: subject choice and career choice, college choice, application procedure, personal statement, and interview preparation. Business & Economics The course covers the keys aspects of microeconomics, macroeconomics and business principles. These ideas are strongly re-enforced with numerous real-life case studies of well-known businesses and brands. Key components of the syllabus include: markets, production, cost, efficiency, supply & demand, market failure, growth & business cycle. During case studies, students have the opportunity to tackle real-life business problems and present their solutions to the class by taking on the role of an external consultant. Page 2 of 7
  • 3. OXFORD REGIS STUDENT INFORMATION Team Building Team building activities draws on individual and team learning, in order to teach valuable life skills. Learning to manage change, work in a team, good communication, and getting the job done properly and on time are skills needed in all aspects of life. The team building workshop aims to teach these skills with a number of group activities that require all of these skills combined. Team building tasks teach students the importance of teamwork, but also show how to analyse a problem and constructively solve it. Leadership & Management The easiest way to distinguish between leadership and management is that management is mostly about processes, whereas leadership is mostly about behaviour. We aim to teach students good management, while growing and encouraging personal leadership and confidence. This workshop covers key aspects of organisation, leading, motivation, and positive reinforcement. Case studies are used as a tool for students to develop and test effective management strategies. Numerous group activities and practical problems are used to develop leadership, teamwork, problem solving skills and confidence. Public Speaking & Debate This course is designed to build students confidence in public speaking and being the focus of a groups attention. This work is consolidated by listening to some of the most famous speakers and speeches of the past 100 years and analysing their qualities. Practical work to build the student’s confidence include reading unfamiliar text out loud to a group, preparing and presenting a speech and taking part in class debate competitions. Debate topics may range from topics such as ‘school hours are not long enough’, to ‘do violent video games and movies have a negative effect on children?’. Cultural Activities And Trips All cultural activities and day-trips are included in the course fee, as well as a full social programme. Cultural Activities (10+ hours) Social Programme (10+ hours) Day Trips (2 full days) Ashmolean Museum Tour of Oxford London Trip University Botanical Gardens Evening Quizzes Blenheim Palace Trip Croquet in Oxford Sport in Oxford University Parks Oxford University Museum Afternoon Tea Punting on the River Thames Oxford Castle Tour London Trip London is one of the great cities of the world, full of world famous attractions. As part of our weekend day-trips, all students at Oxford Regis go to London for a day out and get to see one or all of the following British landmarks: Buckingham Palace - the official London residence of the Queen of England Houses of Parliament - the seat of the two governmental houses of the United Kingdom Big Ben - officially called Elizabeth Tower of the Palace of Westminster Page 3 of 7
  • 4. OXFORD REGIS STUDENT INFORMATION Blenheim Palace Trip Blenheim Palace is an extensive stately home and gardens situated approximately eight miles north of Oxford. It is one of the largest and most grand stately homes in Britain, the birthplace and ancestral home of former Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, and a UNESCO world heritage site.
