2. Parkinson’s Disease
• Parkinson’s disease is a neurological disorder in which brain
neurotransmitter (dopamine) becomes suppressed that
creates many symptoms like tremors, sleep problems,
drooling, rigidity in the muscles and cognitive issues.
3. Sleep
• A condition of a body and mind in which typically requires for
several hours in which the nervous system is inactive, the eyes
are closed and postural muscles relaxed.
4. Sleep Disturbance In Parkinson’s
Disease
• The most commonly reported sleep-related problems are the
inability to sleep through the night and difficulty returning to
sleep after awakening Parkinson’s patients also report
daytime sleepiness, nightmares, vivid dreams and leg
movement or jerking.
5. Symptoms of sleep problem in
Parkinson’s
• Difficulty going to sleep because rigidity makes it hard to get a
comfortable sleep, Loud snoring, restless sleep and pause in
breathing during the night and REM sleep behavior disorder,
in this condition patient are totally unable to move normally.
6. Some steps to better sleep
hygiene
• Avoid stimulants such as caffeine and nicotine, get plenty of
bright light exposure and maintain a proper bedtime routine
for sleeping.
7. Treatment
• Medications:
• Long term use of Levodopa may prevent sleep
disturbance and other medicines like Detrol,
Enablex and many more could give better
results.
8. Therapies
• Wearing a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure device)
at night time can help to reduce obstruction of the airways.
Other therapies are also recommended in accordance with
the condition of the Patient.
