The final fruit of the spirit is self-control, which means that we are to have control over our bodies and minds. The apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 9 reminded us that we must be like athletes.

Some people see the government as a necessary evil. Government prevents anarchy, but it’s best to keep government as small as possible. Others believe that government is the best hope of social change. It needs money, power, and opportunity to make society better. Chances are you fall somewhere between these two positions. But have you ever wondered what God thinks about government? The Bible has some important truths to teach us about our responsibility to our government, no matter what our politics are.

The Scribes and Pharisees relaxed the command to not murder by diminishing the judgment involved; but Jesus teaches us about true righteousness that we are not to devalue our fellow man and we should reconcile quickly when there are issues between us. Ultimately, Jesus is reminding us that God is life, and we must value life to be like Him.

Jesus proclaims to his disciples that he has overcome the world. The world is the Satanic way of thinking that has corrupted this world. Jesus helps us to understand that through the work of the Holy Spirit the world is convicted concerning sin, righteousness and judgment. When we believe in Jesus we can have forgiveness of sins, eternal life, and we overcome the world through him.

Isaiah 59:14-20. Based on Sermon: Why Did God Deal with Sin? (Dave Stewart), 2014 January 26 The story of man is the story of sin. In this lesson we will examine sin and why a holy and loving God would deal with sin. For many of us, our first thought is that Jehovah dealt with sin because of His wrath. This seems to be an incomplete answer. Rather as a loving Father he dealt with sin to bring us back into a righteous relationship with Him. Many of these thoughts were inspired and borrowed from Jim McGuiggan’s book: The Dragon Slayer, chapter 2: The Road leading to Bethlehem and Golgatha.

Chapter 6 of "Bible Basics" a Bible study manual, dealing with satan, the devil and demons. The case is made that Satan doesn't exist as a personal, cosmic being; rather does the word simply mean an adversary, and is sometimes used about ordinary people, and at times is used as a personification of sin. The book is available from http://www.biblebasicsonline.com There is a more detailed study in "The Real Devil", www.realdevil.info

You’ll learn in this lesson what it means that Jesus bore our sins. It is not just what happened on the cross, that’s the climax of His holiness. Rather it’s everything about Jesus coming to be a man and identify with us in our sin and guilt and through his love and compassion be the sin offering so that we can be reconciled to our Father. This lesson is modified, but almost completely, Jim McGuiggan’s (Jim McGuiggan: The Dragon Slayer, Chapter 7: Not Ashamed to be Called their Brother (p. 212-250)

Our Freedom From Sin - The Conflict of Two Natures SABAOTH WINTER 2018 The Spirit of Holiness & The Sanctification of Man Part 2: Our Freedom From Sin. Section C: SUBSECTION 2: The Conflict of Two Natures In our world today, where new and more complicated problems of seem to emanate from mans dealings with others and even more disturbing, man’s dealing with himself. An age when man have now decided to create a culture of ‘managing his problems’ instead of seeking a solution; all kinds of ‘programmes’ are proffered to solve these problems but the real intensions of proffering this solution is the lust for money and fame – “For the love of money is the root of all evil”. Man keep going round and round in circles but ‘no solution’. We can see in the scriptures that God, the Master Planner has already provided a solution right from the foundation of the world; that solution based on His plan to start a new tribe, a new race entirely. This solution does not involve tampering around with the old so that ‘it can be managed’. He goes deep down to the root and cuts us off ( He cuts us off from our connection to Adam) and then begins a new tribe, a new race. But the wonder and the glory of it is that he starts the tribe, the new race within the shell of the old. Outwardly, we remain unchanged. Our bodies are still subject to decrepitude and decay and death. Yet, within, a new man has begun if we have exercised faith in Jesus Christ and repented. God's solution is to end the curse of Adam and to release within us the power of a new life, the life of Jesus himself. Not only are we freed from sin, as Paul points out, but we are freed from the Law as well. The Law does its work (condemns us), but we are no longer under Law if we are resting in Christ. Therefore, the Law does not serve any useful purpose in delivering us from sin apart from flashing the search light on it (sin) and drive us back to Christ Jesus. The writer of this epistle, Apostle Paul, like many of us today, was protected and sheltered and kept from exposure to serious temptations. He was raised in the Jewish culture, where everyone around him was sheltered also. Here is a man like many any other believers have grown up in a home where you have been protected and sheltered, and you have run with a crowd of friends who, likewise, have been kept from exposure to various things. You haven't fallen into evil. WHEN A HOLY LAW IS APPLIED (JUST LIKE A SEARCHLIGHT) TO SINFUL MAN, THEN HIS SINFULNESS COMES OUT IN FULL DISPLAY.

Jesus has been called the "Great Physician." We think of His miracles of healing. But those miracles of healing our physical bodies point to a far greater miracle--the healing of our heart and soul. He doesn't just mean physical life and death. He points to something greater--spiritual life and death, both in this world and the next.

We can spend a lifetime looking for that which will fill our souls. We can look far and wide, with people, with events, with experiences, with acquisitions, and with just about anything else you of which comes to mind. But we will never touch the deepest parts of our soul until we find what Jesus called "living water." We will experience more of that living water as we become dispensers of living water, just like the woman we'll study this week!

In John 3, Jesus teaches Nicodemus, a committed leader of Judaism, about the necessity of being born again. John 3 also lays out God's rescue mission of men and women who are lost, guilty, and without hope, in need of rescue! But most folks aren't interested, not believing they need rescuing, and certainly not interested in the remedy for sin.

We so often hear the story of Mary this time of year, but it’s just as easy to gloss over the extreme cost it would have been to a young girl, to find herself graced with this ‘favor’ from God. What did it cost her in terms of her life’s plans? What did it cost her socially, with her family, with friends and neighbors? What does radical obedience cost us?

It is likely during this time of COVID, that you have experienced a heightened sense of despondency. You've also likely experienced a heightened sense of loneliness, isolation, and being disconnected. Jesus experienced all of this as well. That He has experienced these things is meant to comfort you, lift you, and carry you along in during times like these. It's the HUMANITY of Jesus that surprises us with rest for our souls.

The Christmas message clearly spells out the deity of Christ, but this is not just a theological issue with which to ponder. It is meant to jolt us out of our spiritual stupor (sleepiness) to obeying "Jesus Christ our LORD." If obedience in our daily lives is replaced by right theology, then the boat has sailed without us.

Beneath people's veneer are hidden questions. "Do I matter? Do I matter to anyone? Does someone really care about me?" People hunger and thirst for real "life," that sense of satisfaction that comes from being deeply connected with God and others. That is what Christ offers us, and He offers this real "life" through us to others! What we all want to know, is how does this happen?

This week we are looking at understanding and interpreting the Bible. The Bible is composed of 66 Books in multiple genres written over thousands of years. It can be daunting, and sometimes hard to understand. This week we are taking a few steps to try and make it a little easier to understand.

Jeremiah was known as "the weeping prophet." In spite of his faithful and bold preaching, he watched helplessly as his beloved nation continued to slide toward destruction. Jeremiah paid a terrible price for his message. He faced ridicule, scorn, torture and suffering. What was most heart-breaking was watching the Babylonians break through the city walls of Jerusalem, burn the city to the ground, turn stone buildings into rubble, and drive 90% of the people into exile. IT DIDN’T HAVE TO END THIS WAY.

This 9-week series has been written to help you think biblically about the issues before us, and particularly the ideas and underpinnings of candidates' platforms and policy decisions. In our country, this is where the rubber meets the road. This week we'll look at some of the ISM's that drive secular politics and beliefs, and do a two day dive into the "hottest" and "newest" ISM, then compare it with the biblical worldview.

Work is work, and work takes work. Work is another introduction into the realities of life. But work is not just about work. There is the interplay of economics and government. It is important to have what the bible calls "understanding," not just about work, economics and government to have "understanding" about how these three entities should work together.

In our day there is growing confusion about gender. There is a secular movement of thinking that seeks to minimize or obliterate any differences between genders. In this secular way of thinking, gender is something that one feels or identifies as. This is like leaving a great sailing ship on the high seas without sails and a rudder. It will be carried along wherever the current wishes, adrift on the open seas. The unintended consequences of this thinking is to create greater confusion for young people who already struggle with their gender and confusing feelings of their identity, but there is a wondrous design to complementary gender that seeks to build intimacy in a marriage, deeper relationships with people, and reflects the wonder of our Trinitarian God.

What does the bible say about marriage? Up until 15-20 years ago this was not a "controversial" topic. Everyone knew the answer. Our secular culture continues to send its tsunami waves at our Judeo-Christian heritage, causing great confusion. How are we to think about same-sex marriage? What does the bible say? Before we address those questions we will spend time reviewing what makes a marriage a biblical marriage.

As we continue our conversation on a Christian worldview, specifically as it deals with thinking through this upcoming election we are diving deeper and deeper into different issues. This week we are looking at the sanctity of life. What it means to be made in the image of God, to have value, and to be worthy of life, no matter what stage of life you are in.

Our task is to always learn God's eternal truths and apply them to our lives. This includes how God views government. What does the bible say about government? How do the bible's stories illustrate the truth or foolishness of how government is done? How do we apply the biblical truths in our country? This requires wisdom, discernment, humility and what the Bible calls "good sense."

We are a worshiping community. In that community our joys are magnified, and our sorrows shared. Unity, the experience of community that worships God together, serves together, loves together, and shares common purposes provides joy for the heart that cannot be found in isolation. We'll find five examples in the Psalms of Assent that illustrate our need for community and the opportunities community provides in a difficult world.
