Notes de l'éditeur

  1. Pam to do the introduction and talk about how she has setup at Just Host recently to provide a cost effective LMS It has become very popular among educators around the world as a tool for creating online dynamic web sites for their students. To work, it needs to be installed on a web server somewhere, either on one of your own computers or one at a web hosting company.
  2. Liam: Open Source: made by “ peer production via bartering and collaboration, with the end-product code, source-material, and documentation available at no cost to the public ” If you’ve ever freely shared course content with another trainer, you can call yourself an open-source training developer. Open source = usually cheaper, often free E.g. Mozilla Firefox & Thunderbird (most popular non-Microsoft web browser & email application), Mediawiki (that runs Wikipedia.org and many other wiki’s), Linux (an operating system now commonly used by ISPs & corporate intranets as is more stable and secure than Windows). continuous improvement for popular applications .. and Moodle is popular . Mozilla (an open source web browser) has thousands of ‘add-ons’/extra bells and whistles (again most free) developed by knowledgeable users. Moodle also has and continues to benefit from the work of its many users (and we’ll visit their forum shortly to see ‘whats news’). rapid bug-fixes (usually) Link re Moodle’s initial development & evolution: http://www.oss-watch.ac.uk/resources/cs-moodle.xml Open source products tend to float to the top.
  3. Pam to moderate this section: Do this as a poll – preset the poll tool for ABCD Publish votes to the whiteboard Then tell us who was right and where that fact came from. 36 Million in 210 countries About moodle on the Moodle.org website http://moodle.org/stats/
  4. ? App share > Tour of Pams new Moodle (“see how easy it is to start”), and TAFE SA Moodle (see some of what is possible: img slice/ file submission / q&a / LO’s).
  5. Pam to moderate this section: Ask audience to raise their hand to use the microphone, or enter some details in text chat Then prepare a fresh whiteboard for participants to write on Select one or two and ask for the person to talk about that It can be used for very large deployments with many students, yet it can also be used for a primary school or an education hobbyist. It can be the platform to conduct fully online courses, or to augment face-to-face courses or blended learning. Participant interaction   What have they used it for. Has it been as a student or as a teacher What features have they used.
  6. Liam to moderate here and do the web tour: Show everyone how to get to this part of Moodle docs From moodle.org: /support/moodle docs/ teacher docs / getting started for teachers Show the image of how a course looks at the beginning App share: Moodle demonstration site http:// demo.moodle.net / Then explain how to: Switch on editing and explain what the symbols mean – scroll to that image on the page Explain the range of Activities available – scroll to that image on the page Show: labels; files uploads; ppts>pages Explore the resources and blocks - scroll to those images on the page News
  7. Pam to demonstrate how to create a forum and a wiki – show how they can be used by the learners and tutor Use your own site for an application sharing of what you are doing – keep it really simple and straight forward and ask for suggestions from the audience for what they might add to a forum topic as a title or instructions; or how they would use a wiki or database. Keep this to about 6-8 minutes then return to slides. Handover Carole to do the next slide – and take a breather
  8. Carole to moderate this section: Carole’s notes: I like Moodle because it only takes a short time to develop a course – teacher can learn and design, build and implement in one term e.g. My experiences with a collaborative Moodle building PD I participated in Jan 2010 – how it lead me to implementing Sandpits for those I tutor I like Moodle because it enables a range of tools for the learner to interact – with the courseware, with other participants, with the faciltator e.g. My experiences with Moodle courses at Holmesglen for the TEES – how this lead to the use of the Moodle wiki tool as a collaborative blog I like Moodle because it is adaptable – you can move the pieces of your courseware around on the screen to suit the flow, the sequence and the learners e.g. My experience from the SA Moodle Meetup recently – learning how to avoid the Scroll Of Death (SOD) I like Moodle because of its functionality – it has a tool for just about every type of learning activity you could possibly want – and its not there in version 1.9 it soon will be in version 2.0 e.g. My favourite function is the “book tool” and I am told it is built in to version 2 – rather than needing to be plugged in I like Moodle because of its affordability – it can be downloaded absolutely free to your own server (Open Source – gotta love them developers) and it can be obtained relatively cheaply as an organisation wide LMS through eWorks, BrightCookie or JustHost. Moodle is the answer to a teacher/developer/facilitator’s prayers.
  9. Liam to moderate this section: Use this to ask the group to do a search for answers at: http://docs.moodle.org/en/Teacher_documentation Or set up an Elluminate Quiz which asks these questions or another set of your choosing. When is Moodle V2 to be released? Early November, 2010 (if testing goes well) http://docs.moodle.org/en/Moodle_2.0_release_notes#Major_new_features   How can you import a Toolbox (SCORM) object? Unzip into my sandpit002   (if not already, show LORN object in http:// moodle.tafesa.edu.au/mod/resource/view.php?id =104855 )     What Moodle activity would you use to: •           Provide a method of asynchronous communication - You would use a forum for asynchronous or wiki for collaborative projects and chat for sychronous One way: announcements via News/Events Two way- discussion Provide a process for submitting files (TAFE SA also) Do we need to show assignments somewhere?? (Pam) What Moodle resource would you use to: Display a set of uploaded files Prepare a set of sequenced web pages
  10. Pam to moderate this section: What to do next? Why not visit the Moodleman’s Blog and access the Moodle Playpen. Try out the standard or the playpen 2.0Alpha (a sneak peak at what you get with v2) Invite participants to ‘have a Moodle’ – if they need a sandpit they can request one from me and do the Moodle Basic Training course
