She has worked in several high risk zones earlier, but Dr Kalyani Gomathinayagam
had to make some of the toughest decisions in her career during her recent stint at
an Ebola camp in Liberia.
“Working in the Ebola project was challenging because the normal doctor-patient
relationship is different. The patients cannot see your face because of the
protective gear,“ says the Maduraibased doctor who works with Médecins Sans
Frontières (MSF), an international humanitarian organization.

Dr Gomathinayagam, who worked with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police for a
decade, was inspired to join MSF after observing its work in Democratic Republic of
Congo. “I was working with the UN peacekeeping force on deputation from my
parent organization,“ says the 46year-old. As part of MSF, she has journeyed to
Haiti to work with earthquake victims; Chad to treat malnutrition and work in
refugee camps; Congo for malaria intervention; and Ivory Coast after the civil war.

“So going to Liberia was like working in any other emergency context, though my
family was concerned,“ says Dr Gomathinayagam, who first went to Geneva for a
briefing before proceeding to the case management centre in Foya in the first
week of September. “It was a 40-bed facility, but during peak season, shortly
before my arrival, they were handling 100120 patients at a time. It was one of the
epicentres, like a hotspot,“ says the doctor who spent five weeks there.

Working in the high risk isolation unit was tough.“The protective gear you wore
created a big physical barrier; you cannot conduct a full physical evaluation. It was
always safety versus what you can do.“
The recommended amount of time you could spend in the unit was one hour,
maximum two. “It was not a normal ICU.“ But the most difficult part was keeping
the family members away from loved ones when they were dying.
