Added intelligence
Some forms of technology have been steeped in
mystery to the extent that they negate the purpose
for which they were designed.
Light control is such an example. A technology
that was born from our need of ergonomic and
energy-saving lighting. Obvious, yet too difficult
to understand. Both to those planning, the person
installing, and to the person who has to use it.
At last the technology has finally matured and Fa-
gerhult can now introduce a unique concept. e-Sense
– added intelligence. All you need to do is to connect
the luminaire and press a button.
Our aim has been to eliminate all the hidden costs
of installation, operation and maintenance. To avoid
switches and complicated settings. You install a nor-
mal luminaire, but get a complete control system.
With e-Sense each luminaire in the room can
think for itself, or as one system. The luminaires
have a newly developed multisensor that detects
movement in the room, measures the daylight and
and adapts the output accordingly. You determine
its level of intelligence by selecting from two system
models, the fully featured e-Sense ActiLume or the
basic model e-Sense SmartSwitch. No matter what
you choose the luminaire takes care of itself.
On the other hand, there is nothing more frustra-
ting than inflexible technology. If you want to you
can control the light yourself, with the help of a pull
switch. And if you want to refurnish your office, it's
not a problem as the luminaire is an independent
working unit. Time consuming and costly repro-
gramming is no longer needed.
e-Sense represents ease of use, efficiency, energy
and economy. Easy to install and use. Effective with
regard to light treatment and energy consumption
– you save up to 75 per cent. Ergonomic as you look
after visual and psychological needs. Economy is the
sum of all parts. We have integrated light control
into the system, so you can divert your energies
elsewhere. A smart move we think.
Fagerhult e-Sense – lighting control made simple
Fagerhult e-Sense – you control the design
Fagerhult e-Sense is the smart way to save energy.
One of the most difficult choices you have to make is between form
and function. This has been the case for a long time within light control.
Choosing a light control function limited the number of luminaire models
available, while those who gave priority to design had to cope with com-
plicated control systems – or no control at all. This was an insult to all the
architects, light planners and interior designers that applied a holistic ap-
proach to their work. Consequently, we now offer e-Sense on virtually all
luminaires in our product range. Which reflects the growing importance
we attach to integrated lighting control.
Initially we will offer various leading products in an e-Sense design with
ready-to-install order numbers. Install, connect and start experiencing the
benefits of control.
We also offer e-Sense MLS, with a range of existing luminaires incorpo-
rating the new miniaturized sensor from Ex-Or, the DH sensor.
Further details available on request.
Fagerhult e-sense is the easiest, quickest
way to install light control. All you have to
do is to connect it. And the system is up and
running. If you want to make personal set-
tings, you can do this by pressing the service
button and selecting between the two most
common operating functions. It couldn’t be
easier.
BA
Fagerhult e-Sense luminaires are equipped with integrated
light control. An attractive, easy installation without the need
of add-on or external sensors. No connections – no problems.
e-Sense ActiLume
ActiLume is a control system based on
the DALI protocol. The system consists of
a detector and a controller. The sensor
has three different parts: a detector for
presence, a sensor for daylight control and
an IR receiver should you want to use a
remote control.
e-Sense ActiLume offers maximum
comfort and energy savings up to 75 %.
The immense energy saving potential gives
the possibility of repaying the investment
quickly.
The system also offers the user the
chance to adjust the lighting to his/her
personal level with the help of a retractable
switch, pull cord or a remote control.
The master luminaire can control ten
others (11 HF-ballasts). The system has two
channels, A and B. Channel B has a 30 %
offset, which means that Channel B starts
to be regulated when channel A drops to
70 %. When channel A is regulated to 10 %,
channel B is then set to 40 %.
In recessed installations channel A can
control the luminaires close to the window
where there is more incoming daylight, and
channel B control luminaires away from
the windows.
In pendant three lamp luminaires (with
two ballasts) we use the system to control
the direct and indirect light separately with
channel B controlling the indirect light.
Fagerhult e-Sense – two systems, same simplicity
e-Sense SmartSwitch
SmartSwitch is an on/off-sensor that con-
trols the connected luminaire via the mains
voltage. There is also a model with pull dim
for individual setting of the lighting level
available. SmartSwitch gives automatic ig-
nition/extinguishing controlled by presence
and the ambient light. The presence detec-
tion can be set with a delay of between 1
to 30 minutes.
When the amount of ambient light
(daylight) is sufficient the lighting is swit-
ched off, the lighting level that activates
switching off can be set between 50–2000
lux. This function can be omitted.
e-Sense SmartSwitch absence dimming
A control function adapted to a room in an
office which is used sparingly, for example,
a copying room, stockroom, corridors or
a cloakroom. The lighting level is set at a
constant low level to counteract the im-
pression of a darkened room. Any presence
is detected and the lighting is adjusted to
100 %. The time delay to return to the low
level (10 %) can be short unlike control with
a switch off function where you need to av-
oid unnecessary starting of the fluorescent
lamp. If you wish to switch off the lumin-
aire completely, this can be done centrally
once working hours are over.
In addition, with the setting for lux
on/off you can prevent control if there is
already sufficient light in the room. Adjust-
ment of the time and lux level are made on
the rear of the sensor.

Presence detection
Presence control switches the lighting on and off auto-
matically. After the last presence detection the lighting
is switched off with a 15 minutes delay.
Daylight control
A sensor adapts the lighting output to the amount of
incidental light (natural light). If there is no daylight,
this function regulates the light output to maintain
the required illumination level.
IR-receiver
To control and programme using the remote control if
required. The remote control is an accessory.
Manual control (touch)
Full manual control via pull dim in the luminaire or
retractive switch on the wall.
Channel B 30 % offset
Channel B has a 30 % offset, which means that channel
B starts to be regulated when channel A drops to 70 %.
When channel A is regulated to 10 %, channel B is then
set to 40 %.
ActiLume offers maximum comfort and au-
tomatic energy saving. ActiLume adapts the
level of light to the surrounding environ-
ment and when the room is not in use the
light is switched off.
When the sensor detects presence, the
system automatically switches the light
on. If there is sufficient daylight in a room
the level is automatically dampened. The
light is switched off when the room has
been empty for some time. As light is only
on when needed, the system can give the
energy savings up to 75 %.
Night: The office is in darkness. 07:56 The luminaire is switched
on with presence as the daylight
does not satisfy the lighting need.
Daylight reduces the luminaire
light accordingly, also known as
daylight control.
Adjustment is performed slowly
and constantly according to a set
value. When dimmed, the uplight
is 30% higher than the downlight.
The series of pictures shows what happens in the room. The curve shows how the luminaire's energy use varies throughout the day.

Programming of additional functions with IRT 8099
The simplicity of the
ActiLume system is based
on the ability to start the
system by pressing the
service button on the sen-
sor. Should you require a
modified function, several
modes can be programmed
with the help of the remote
control IRT 8099. The system
comes with nine pre-pro-
grammed modes for e.g. schools, corridors, etc. The first two are
accessed using the service button, see the left-hand column. Cat.
no 86155.
Detection over a larger area with IRT 8118
An ActiLume sensor placed
in a luminaire approxi-
mately 2.3 m above the floor
has a presence detector
with a detection range of
about 5 x 6 metres. If you
wish to detect presence over
a greater area, one or more
detectors type IRT 8118
can be connected to one of
the DALI terminals in the
luminaire. No programming or commissioning is necessary. IRT
8118 is ideally placed in the ceiling, and has a detection area of
approximately 7 x 7 metres. IRT 8118 is only a presence detec-
tor. Cat. no 86152.
Product description
The system consists of
a small, compact sensor
unit and a controller de-
signed for assembly in
the luminaire. ActiLume
is a simple system
produced for “plug and
play” lighting solutions
in office areas. The
combination presence
detector – light sensor
– dimmable HF-ballasts gives a vast range of choices. With
the experience of knowing which combinations are used
the most, you can easily attain the perfect solution for light
control in an office.
To start an ActiLume installation is easy – just connect it!
ActiLume has a factory
setting that automati-
cally sets the lighting
level. However, you
should make your own
setting for the room in
question. NOTE! Avoid
the influence of daylight
when doing this.
Press in the service
button for longer than
3 seconds (the fluorescent lamp flashes once). After 30
seconds the adjustment is made (the fluorescent lamp
flashes again). A delay of 30 seconds is used to give time to
move away a ladder or anything else that may obstruct the
normal reading of the work surface with a sensor. ActiLume
adjusts the light level automatically to approximately 80 %
of the new light value. This corresponds to about 600 lux
(500 lux + 0.8 maintenance factor) on the work surface
in an office with the normal placement of the luminaire.
Adjustment to 80% is as the new, maintained, light level
is usually higher than the normal value. You already make
savings with this setting.
You can easily choose one of two standard functions by
pressing the sensor unit's service button (press less than
3 seconds). When the button is released the fluorescent
lamp indicates by flashing once or twice:
Flashing once = “Mode 1” Office (the light is switched off
approximately 15 minutes after last presence detection).
Flashing twice = “Mode 2” Landscape office solution (the
light is adjusted down to a low level after the last presence
detection and is completely switched off 2 hours later).
ActiLume functionality and commissioning
SmartSwitch functionality and commissioning
Product description
SmartSwitch consists of a
small sensor unit and the
combined relay/power sup-
ply. The capacity of the relay
is 200 VA, which means you
can connect one or two HF-
ballasts for ignition/switch-
ing off.
The sensor is a PIR-unit
(Passive Infra Red) with a
detection area of approxi-
mately 4 x 3 metres when the
luminaire is placed at a height of 2.1 metres. Within this area the
sensor detects IR radiation from the body whereby the relay closes
and the lamp in the luminaire comes on.
At the rear of the sensor unit
on SmartSwitch there is also
a setting for the lux level.
This is a threshold value that
prevents the sensor from re-
acting to presence if there is
already sufficient light in the
room. This setting has been
removed in luminaires with
Pull dim, so that you can al-
ways manually switch on and
switch off in a bright room.
The lux level is more usable with absence dimming. A luminaire
with SmartSwitch only needs to be connected to the mains supply
– it's then ready.
Application areas
SmartSwitch has been developed to suit most office buildings,
individual rooms as well as open office landscapes. SmartSwitch is
also ideal for entrances, corridors and small meeting rooms.
SmartSwitch ON/OFF
After the last detection the sensor switches off automati-
cally. The delay can be adjusted between 1 to 30 minutes. You
should not have a shorter switching off delay than 15 minutes.
If the luminaire switches on and off too often, this affects the
life of the fluorescent lamp.
SmartSwitch ON/OFF has a setting for the lux level, if the
light is sufficient the lamp is not switched on. e-Sense SmartS-
witch ON/OFF does not feature dimmable HF-ballasts.
SmartSwitch pull dim
Using the pull switch you can easily adjust the light level as
well as switch on and off. This is an advantage especially when
using adjustable desks. In the highest position the light level on
the work surface can be double that of when in sitting position.
The luminaire has a memory for the last setting, which with
detection means that it reignites at the level it was previously
switched off at. The setting for the lux level has been removed
so that you can always switch on and switch off the luminaire
manually using the pull cord even in a bright room.
e-Sense SmartSwitch pull dim is equipped with an ECO lp
device for dimming via the pull switch, one or two switches
depending on the luminaire. The switch provides switching on
and switching off functions as well as manual dimming.
SmartSwitch absence dimming
Control between high/low levels. This function is very much
in demand. there is still a need to adequately light areas of
low presence these include copying rooms, cloakrooms, paper
stores, etc. Frequently switching a luminaire on and off has a
negative affect on the life of the fluorescent lamp, however,
adjusting between two levels is perfectly acceptable. The
minimum level in the function is set to approximately 10 %,
which gives basic light in the room. When presence is detected
the level is adjusted directly to 100 %. The time delay back to
the low level can be short, about 1-2 minutes. This function
provides the opportunity of major energy savings in rooms with
short periods of presence without jeopardizing the life of the
fluorescent lamp. Switching off should be controlled centrally
in the system, for example, via a time switch.
The absence dimming function also features a setting for the
lux level, if the light is sufficient the level is not adjusted.

FAGERHULT | e-sense

  • 2. Some forms of technology have been steeped in mystery to the extent that they negate the purpose for which they were designed. Light control is such an example. A technology that was born from our need of ergonomic and energy-saving lighting. Obvious, yet too difficult to understand. Both to those planning, the person installing, and to the person who has to use it. At last the technology has finally matured and Fa- gerhult can now introduce a unique concept. e-Sense – added intelligence. All you need to do is to connect the luminaire and press a button. Our aim has been to eliminate all the hidden costs of installation, operation and maintenance. To avoid switches and complicated settings. You install a nor- mal luminaire, but get a complete control system. With e-Sense each luminaire in the room can think for itself, or as one system. The luminaires have a newly developed multisensor that detects movement in the room, measures the daylight and and adapts the output accordingly. You determine its level of intelligence by selecting from two system models, the fully featured e-Sense ActiLume or the basic model e-Sense SmartSwitch. No matter what you choose the luminaire takes care of itself. On the other hand, there is nothing more frustra- ting than inflexible technology. If you want to you can control the light yourself, with the help of a pull switch. And if you want to refurnish your office, it's not a problem as the luminaire is an independent working unit. Time consuming and costly repro- gramming is no longer needed. e-Sense represents ease of use, efficiency, energy and economy. Easy to install and use. Effective with regard to light treatment and energy consumption – you save up to 75 per cent. Ergonomic as you look after visual and psychological needs. Economy is the sum of all parts. We have integrated light control into the system, so you can divert your energies elsewhere. A smart move we think. Fagerhult e-Sense – lighting control made simple
  • 3. Fagerhult e-Sense – you control the design Fagerhult e-Sense is the smart way to save energy. One of the most difficult choices you have to make is between form and function. This has been the case for a long time within light control. Choosing a light control function limited the number of luminaire models available, while those who gave priority to design had to cope with com- plicated control systems – or no control at all. This was an insult to all the architects, light planners and interior designers that applied a holistic ap- proach to their work. Consequently, we now offer e-Sense on virtually all luminaires in our product range. Which reflects the growing importance we attach to integrated lighting control. Initially we will offer various leading products in an e-Sense design with ready-to-install order numbers. Install, connect and start experiencing the benefits of control. We also offer e-Sense MLS, with a range of existing luminaires incorpo- rating the new miniaturized sensor from Ex-Or, the DH sensor. Further details available on request. Fagerhult e-sense is the easiest, quickest way to install light control. All you have to do is to connect it. And the system is up and running. If you want to make personal set- tings, you can do this by pressing the service button and selecting between the two most common operating functions. It couldn’t be easier.
  • 4. BA Fagerhult e-Sense luminaires are equipped with integrated light control. An attractive, easy installation without the need of add-on or external sensors. No connections – no problems. e-Sense ActiLume ActiLume is a control system based on the DALI protocol. The system consists of a detector and a controller. The sensor has three different parts: a detector for presence, a sensor for daylight control and an IR receiver should you want to use a remote control. e-Sense ActiLume offers maximum comfort and energy savings up to 75 %. The immense energy saving potential gives the possibility of repaying the investment quickly. The system also offers the user the chance to adjust the lighting to his/her personal level with the help of a retractable switch, pull cord or a remote control. The master luminaire can control ten others (11 HF-ballasts). The system has two channels, A and B. Channel B has a 30 % offset, which means that Channel B starts to be regulated when channel A drops to 70 %. When channel A is regulated to 10 %, channel B is then set to 40 %. In recessed installations channel A can control the luminaires close to the window where there is more incoming daylight, and channel B control luminaires away from the windows. In pendant three lamp luminaires (with two ballasts) we use the system to control the direct and indirect light separately with channel B controlling the indirect light. Fagerhult e-Sense – two systems, same simplicity
  • 5. e-Sense SmartSwitch SmartSwitch is an on/off-sensor that con- trols the connected luminaire via the mains voltage. There is also a model with pull dim for individual setting of the lighting level available. SmartSwitch gives automatic ig- nition/extinguishing controlled by presence and the ambient light. The presence detec- tion can be set with a delay of between 1 to 30 minutes. When the amount of ambient light (daylight) is sufficient the lighting is swit- ched off, the lighting level that activates switching off can be set between 50–2000 lux. This function can be omitted. e-Sense SmartSwitch absence dimming A control function adapted to a room in an office which is used sparingly, for example, a copying room, stockroom, corridors or a cloakroom. The lighting level is set at a constant low level to counteract the im- pression of a darkened room. Any presence is detected and the lighting is adjusted to 100 %. The time delay to return to the low level (10 %) can be short unlike control with a switch off function where you need to av- oid unnecessary starting of the fluorescent lamp. If you wish to switch off the lumin- aire completely, this can be done centrally once working hours are over. In addition, with the setting for lux on/off you can prevent control if there is already sufficient light in the room. Adjust- ment of the time and lux level are made on the rear of the sensor. Fagerhult e-Sense – two systems, same simplicity
  • 6. BA e-Sense ActiLume Functions offered by e-Sense luminaires equipped with ActiLume Presence detection Presence control switches the lighting on and off auto- matically. After the last presence detection the lighting is switched off with a 15 minutes delay. Daylight control A sensor adapts the lighting output to the amount of incidental light (natural light). If there is no daylight, this function regulates the light output to maintain the required illumination level. IR-receiver To control and programme using the remote control if required. The remote control is an accessory. Manual control (touch) Full manual control via pull dim in the luminaire or retractive switch on the wall. Channel B 30 % offset Channel B has a 30 % offset, which means that channel B starts to be regulated when channel A drops to 70 %. When channel A is regulated to 10 %, channel B is then set to 40 %. ActiLume offers maximum comfort and au- tomatic energy saving. ActiLume adapts the level of light to the surrounding environ- ment and when the room is not in use the light is switched off. When the sensor detects presence, the system automatically switches the light on. If there is sufficient daylight in a room the level is automatically dampened. The light is switched off when the room has been empty for some time. As light is only on when needed, the system can give the energy savings up to 75 %. Night: The office is in darkness. 07:56 The luminaire is switched on with presence as the daylight does not satisfy the lighting need. Daylight reduces the luminaire light accordingly, also known as daylight control. Adjustment is performed slowly and constantly according to a set value. When dimmed, the uplight is 30% higher than the downlight. The series of pictures shows what happens in the room. The curve shows how the luminaire's energy use varies throughout the day.

  • 14. Manual control Any retractable switch can be connected to the manual light control, quickly pressing for on/off. While pressing and holding gives a dimmer function. Pull switch not required for the UK. IR remote controls IRT 8010 and IRT 8050 A basic remote control for general use. The units have only two buttons, one to switch on/increase the light level and one to switch off/ reduce the light level. Aim the transmitter towards the ActiLume sensor in the lu- minaire and adjust the light level. A holder is provided so that the remote control is always kept in the same place. The same control functions are offered by the transmitter IRT 8050 for fixed wall installation (small picture). Handheld remote control Cat. no 86153. Wall mounted remote control Cat. no 86151. Programming of additional functions with IRT 8099 The simplicity of the ActiLume system is based on the ability to start the system by pressing the service button on the sen- sor. Should you require a modified function, several modes can be programmed with the help of the remote control IRT 8099. The system comes with nine pre-pro- grammed modes for e.g. schools, corridors, etc. The first two are accessed using the service button, see the left-hand column. Cat. no 86155. Detection over a larger area with IRT 8118 An ActiLume sensor placed in a luminaire approxi- mately 2.3 m above the floor has a presence detector with a detection range of about 5 x 6 metres. If you wish to detect presence over a greater area, one or more detectors type IRT 8118 can be connected to one of the DALI terminals in the luminaire. No programming or commissioning is necessary. IRT 8118 is ideally placed in the ceiling, and has a detection area of approximately 7 x 7 metres. IRT 8118 is only a presence detec- tor. Cat. no 86152. Product description The system consists of a small, compact sensor unit and a controller de- signed for assembly in the luminaire. ActiLume is a simple system produced for “plug and play” lighting solutions in office areas. The combination presence detector – light sensor – dimmable HF-ballasts gives a vast range of choices. With the experience of knowing which combinations are used the most, you can easily attain the perfect solution for light control in an office. To start an ActiLume installation is easy – just connect it! ActiLume has a factory setting that automati- cally sets the lighting level. However, you should make your own setting for the room in question. NOTE! Avoid the influence of daylight when doing this. Press in the service button for longer than 3 seconds (the fluorescent lamp flashes once). After 30 seconds the adjustment is made (the fluorescent lamp flashes again). A delay of 30 seconds is used to give time to move away a ladder or anything else that may obstruct the normal reading of the work surface with a sensor. ActiLume adjusts the light level automatically to approximately 80 % of the new light value. This corresponds to about 600 lux (500 lux + 0.8 maintenance factor) on the work surface in an office with the normal placement of the luminaire. Adjustment to 80% is as the new, maintained, light level is usually higher than the normal value. You already make savings with this setting. You can easily choose one of two standard functions by pressing the sensor unit's service button (press less than 3 seconds). When the button is released the fluorescent lamp indicates by flashing once or twice: Flashing once = “Mode 1” Office (the light is switched off approximately 15 minutes after last presence detection). Flashing twice = “Mode 2” Landscape office solution (the light is adjusted down to a low level after the last presence detection and is completely switched off 2 hours later). ActiLume functionality and commissioning
  • 15. SmartSwitch functionality and commissioning Product description SmartSwitch consists of a small sensor unit and the combined relay/power sup- ply. The capacity of the relay is 200 VA, which means you can connect one or two HF- ballasts for ignition/switch- ing off. The sensor is a PIR-unit (Passive Infra Red) with a detection area of approxi- mately 4 x 3 metres when the luminaire is placed at a height of 2.1 metres. Within this area the sensor detects IR radiation from the body whereby the relay closes and the lamp in the luminaire comes on. At the rear of the sensor unit on SmartSwitch there is also a setting for the lux level. This is a threshold value that prevents the sensor from re- acting to presence if there is already sufficient light in the room. This setting has been removed in luminaires with Pull dim, so that you can al- ways manually switch on and switch off in a bright room. The lux level is more usable with absence dimming. A luminaire with SmartSwitch only needs to be connected to the mains supply – it's then ready. Application areas SmartSwitch has been developed to suit most office buildings, individual rooms as well as open office landscapes. SmartSwitch is also ideal for entrances, corridors and small meeting rooms. SmartSwitch ON/OFF After the last detection the sensor switches off automati- cally. The delay can be adjusted between 1 to 30 minutes. You should not have a shorter switching off delay than 15 minutes. If the luminaire switches on and off too often, this affects the life of the fluorescent lamp. SmartSwitch ON/OFF has a setting for the lux level, if the light is sufficient the lamp is not switched on. e-Sense SmartS- witch ON/OFF does not feature dimmable HF-ballasts. SmartSwitch pull dim Using the pull switch you can easily adjust the light level as well as switch on and off. This is an advantage especially when using adjustable desks. In the highest position the light level on the work surface can be double that of when in sitting position. The luminaire has a memory for the last setting, which with detection means that it reignites at the level it was previously switched off at. The setting for the lux level has been removed so that you can always switch on and switch off the luminaire manually using the pull cord even in a bright room. e-Sense SmartSwitch pull dim is equipped with an ECO lp device for dimming via the pull switch, one or two switches depending on the luminaire. The switch provides switching on and switching off functions as well as manual dimming. SmartSwitch absence dimming Control between high/low levels. This function is very much in demand. there is still a need to adequately light areas of low presence these include copying rooms, cloakrooms, paper stores, etc. Frequently switching a luminaire on and off has a negative affect on the life of the fluorescent lamp, however, adjusting between two levels is perfectly acceptable. The minimum level in the function is set to approximately 10 %, which gives basic light in the room. When presence is detected the level is adjusted directly to 100 %. The time delay back to the low level can be short, about 1-2 minutes. This function provides the opportunity of major energy savings in rooms with short periods of presence without jeopardizing the life of the fluorescent lamp. Switching off should be controlled centrally in the system, for example, via a time switch. The absence dimming function also features a setting for the lux level, if the light is sufficient the level is not adjusted. e-Sense functions ActiLume SmartSwitch SmartSwitch SmartSwitch On/Off Pull dim Absense dimming Presence detection Absense dimming (high/low) Fixed absense time (15 min) Adjustable absense time (1–30 min) Constant light Automatic setting of lighting level (600 lx) Lux level setting (50 – 2000 lx) IR-receiver Possibility to choose more settings (Modes) 1 pull dim in 2-lamp luminaires 1 pull dim in 3-lamp luminaires 2 pull dim in 3-lamp luminaires (separate direct/indirect) Offset function 30% Possibility to control more luminaires (master function)
