3. Having qualified with a first class degree in Product Design from the University of Dundee, I procured the
position of Prototype Designer in the Design Industry. The experiences I have gained have given me
valuable skills and knowledge that I would now like to apply to teaching.
My intention is to seek relevant classroom experience in advance of beginning a PGCE. I am currently
volunteering at a variety of schools to broaden my understanding of school cultures and their working
methods.
Whilst working in industry at Tin Horse Design, part owned by UNILEVER, I automatically gravitated
towards tutoring school placement students. I was involved in designing and implementing briefs for the
pupils before supervising their use of machines and software providing support and introducing them to the
Design world.
Prior to Tin Horse, I was a successful candidate as a voluntary teacher for Chalkboard Kenya, teaching
Design and all its practical uses at a rural, academic orphanage. The support network of the other
volunteers helped develop my teaching which, in turn, I discovered my enthusiasm encouraged their own
progression.
This opened my mind to the world of creative teaching, experiencing first-hand how providing exciting,
practical lessons can have a lasting and beneficial impact on pupils. My most rewarding challenge with
Chalkboard Kenya was giving extra tuition to students that were unable to read. To see such marked
improvement as a result of my patience and reinforcement was incredible.
My experience in Africa compelled me to research and build a sustainable lighting solution for students living
in developing countries. My design moved families towards an efficient and affordable lighting solution to
allow students to study in the evenings. Consequently, I achieved first place after presenting at the National
Lighting Design Competition for most Innovative Light at Earls Court. Since then I have remained in close
contact with Chalkboard and supported the school by raising money, including a charity parachute jump.
My self-confidence first soared when one of my teachers persuaded me to partake in the Duke of Edinburgh
Award. On completion of my Gold Award I had become completely absorbed with both the hiking and the
voluntary experiences. This is why I continued my voluntary work with Scouts for a further year until I left
for university.
My enthusiasm for design frequently influences my hobbies as I enjoy building sculptures and objects from
a variety of materials, purely for my own interest. However, I also love to challenge myself with sports such
as fun-running, skiing, hiking and, most recently, a 13 mile Tough Mudder. All of these activities have
formed my character, improved my self-confidence and cemented my determination.
To have the opportunity to work in a learning environment would be beneficial to both the students and
myself. I want to experience and learn more about the rewarding challenges teaching holds and to intro-
duce pupils to the dynamic, innovative and ever-evolving industry.
