The ‘news’ of the world
1. The ‘news’ of the world?
At 12.30pm on Sept. 3rd 2013 all bar one of the four/five
newsagents’ hoardings for the Lancashire Telegraph
were identical. These hoardings were on King
Street, from the traffic lights at the bottom of Buncer
Lane to the traffic lights at the bottom of Montague
Street.
No images were used, nor colours, just black and white
text stating:
• “CHILD SEX BEAST GETS 16 YEARS”
• The other hoarding displayed:
“ROVERS TRANSFER DEADLINE DAY LATEST”

“The evil that women do”
“Whether we like it or not, the phenomenon of Myra
Hindley is no longer confined to the purely legal. The
paintings, the songs, the hysteria that surrounds her
crimes have made her a public force. It is currently
one used to reinforce harmful stereotypes and raise
politicians' approval ratings. It would be better
harnessed to provide lessons in how to prevent the
administration of justice being crushed by the
steamroller of populist pressure.”
