I don’t want to give people the opportunity to say bad things about me or my business is a common reply when I ask about going social. If people have bad things to say about your business then they will say them on social media sites whether you are there or not. It is better to be there and respond to bad things than not to be there and let them fester. So, which social media sites should you be on?
There are is a vast array of social media websites all doing roughly the same thing in different ways. These types of websites are cropping up by the dozen on a daily basis and many fall by the wayside never to be heard of again. Others become more popular and a very few are the ones that you want to concentrate on.
Fortunately, there are 3 that can give you a pretty good start with your new social life. Facebook accounts for a quarter of users doing business online, with LinkedIn and Twitter taking the other medal positions. But look at this! You can beat your competition by taking your business social and managing your brand reputation.
Different sites do different things. Networking we’ve just seen but there’s also Bookmarking, Content Sharing, Video/Photo/Music sharing and Blogging sites. All of these can be used to help your efforts on the big 3, or soon to be 4 with Google+.
You want to be on social media sites because, quite simply, that is where your customers, clients, potential customers and potential clients are. And they are spending more time there than ever before. The younger generations spend much more time than this online, outstripping just about every other activity.
You want to manage your brand on social media and make sure as many people as possible know that you exist. You want them to recognise what products and services you offer and at what price. Another great thing about social media is that search engines picked up on it pretty quickly so they serve up social media entries – you can use social media to dominate the search engine results pages.
Of the 10 natural entries on this SERP 4 are from social media sites. This particular comedian has dominated the SERP for his own name with the help of social media – how many of you have done that for your business? Social media rocks.
So, how do you get started? First up we have the Facebook Fan Page. This used to be a great way of displaying a welcome message and keeping the likes of me employed developing them. Recent changes have seen the page get simplified with nothing more than a banner image that cannot contain advertising and a logo type image, and that is all.
Like Facebook, LinkedIn wants you to concentrate on content so their pages are just as simple as Facebook’s but they are business centric and so you can promote your products and services and highlight job openings. Content is the king, queen and duly elected government of social media and they all want people to put content on their platforms so automation has all but disappeared from Facebook and LinkedIn.
Immediacy is the thing with Twitter. Tweet about what is happening now and respond in almost real time. You can brand your Twitter account so that visitors know instantly that they are either in the right place or the wrong place. Again content is the dictator of this platform and there is no opportunity to brand tweets except for your account image.
Because you use Twitter for business you need to have a website optimised for mobile devices. Why? Because most twitter users are on mobile devices. You can see here on the left that our old site doesn’t support mobile devices as it is difficult to use on an mobile. Our new one on the right does. It is simple and gives mobile users quick and easy access to the information that they want.
So you were thinking Does he do this himself? Of course I do and you can find me on all of the social media that I’ve mentioned and more. Be where your customers are, and that is on social media. If you’re not then your competition has a clear advantage over you.
