This is a Project that I developed mainly for 2 reasons - To enable people affected by stroke access to exercise in a 'gym' environment. To show if being able to access exercise would improve peoples overall well being and improve their mental health. The 'outcomes' show marked improvement and the results of the Project were delivered to 'Westminster Health forum' in 2011 as an example 'community stroke improvement'.

5. Fred
Target: Interaction with others, generally to be able to do more in general life.
Sessions attended: 7 / 10
Target Achieved: Fred has made remarkable progress in a social context.
Before the group met, Fred had indicated
that he spent a lot of time at home and was not getting out and about anymore. He has
progressed to some degree physically, but emotionally and socially he is a great deal
more enthusiastic about the future and his life quality.
Trainers Observations: Fred is now able to carry out a wide variety of balance challenges
and cognitive exercise rehearsals. The use of circuit based exercise has proved helpful
and he is able to perform a great deal more repetitions of both weight/resistance work. By
week 3 Fred had improved from a poor start to a broader set of exercises. Hand eye
co-ordination exercises including catch and throw techniques have proved particularly
good for Fred and he likes this element of the sessions.
Quote: “I enjoy the
company of the group.”
6. David E
Target: Build strength, more flexibility.
Sessions attended: 8 / 10
Target Achieved: In weeks one to four David could carry out two sets of eight repetitions
using 1 kg, which has improved to between 2-3 kg in repetitions of 10-12. Free weight’s:
David has increased well using 3 kilos. He has also
improved markedly in trunk and core stability and all general
shoulder rehabilitation exercises including arm curl and weighted lateral raises.
Trainers Observations: David has improved his strength through set circuit routines using the
Kinesis wall and free weights. David has a particular problem with his shoulder and needed
to improve overall strength for daily living tasks.
Quote: “I feel I have improved physically and find the group to be
encouraging and very sociable.”
7. Patrick
Target: To prevent arm shaking and to be able to wash
independently.
Sessions attended: 9 / 10
Target Achieved: Patrick achieved his objective of reducing his arm and hand tremor.
Trainers Observations: By using resistance bands, Patrick undertook early resistance work to
help develop locomotive control and muscular co-ordination. He progressed to
weight/resistance exercise and external arm rotation
in order to consolidate full function. He now enjoys his new found ability and has gained a
great deal more understanding of what could be achieved. Always inquisitive of techniques he
plays an active part in the group and his self help strategy.
Quote: “I’m happy with the Kinesis Suite and am experiencing good results. I feel that the advice and help
given
is beneficial and that the atmosphere was good as everybody encouraged each other. It is also a sociable
event.”
