1. MediaMinds Course Prospectus
Hostile Environtment Awareness Training
One-week residential, minimum 20 parcipants
Pro spectu s 2014
Reporting safely from Hostile Environment/War Zones
This is an outline for far more specialist training for
journalists who will be working in hostile
environments, earthquake zones and the like, and
warzones.
For many years I have worked and managed teams
working in hostile environments and war zones and for
over a decade was directly involved in specialist hostile
environment training and making calls on travel and
cover of breaking stories in such areas.
This one-week course is not designed to replace
those which focus on working directly with
security advisers in the field. It is designed to help
journalists work in very high stress regions and
those travelling will have a fully rounded
understanding and awareness of the issues faced
by front line journalists, be it natural disasters,
injury to colleagues, protests and riots, embeds or
urban attacks. It is certainly ideal for Asia based
journalists. They are residential and take place in
Thailand. Other locations are possible.
It is highly specialized training out of the normal run
on training for journalists but major news
organizations invest heavily in this kind of work and
need to make sure journalists not only stay safe but
can file from difficult and often hostile situations as
well.
2. MediaMinds
Nighttime GPS exercise where the guys have
to find various locations with a GPS and
report back. It is timed and is a
competition. This exercise goes well into
the evening and it is dark by the time they
get back. First aid training in the first half
of the course. Moving a patient. Remote
area training assumes no immediate access
to a medical facility or ambulance.
Body armour is issued and worn for the last
three days of the course. An introduction to
Meals Ready to Eat (MRE) which the military
would issue you with while on an embed.
Evasive driving including high-speed reverse
Y-turn away from a hostile roadblock or
checkpoint. Wheel changing. 4X4 off road
practice. All designed to raise skills needed
for remote or hostile environments.
Accommodation at the camp is dormitory style
with everyone, both sexes, together. The idea
is to replicate what journalists would face on
assignment with the military or working in an
area under hostile conditions such as
earthquakes, floods etc where there are no
hotels and conditions are poor.
3. MediaMinds
Weapon effects/safety and awareness at
the gun range.
With kidnapping becoming more of a threat for front
line journalists there is a full kidnap scenario aimed at
survival in such circumstances. This course is
delivered in conjunction with security training
company. A classroom based only course is also
available.
