I am Poem: Son of the Aztecs
1. Phillip Ramirez
November 24, 2010
Period 5 HWL
Son of the Aztecs
I am from wandering in the jungle,
Looking for a place to call our own.
From finding a perfect spot,
Then being swept away in a great battle.
I am from Tenochtitlan, the great island city,
Where towers and palaces dominate the sky.
Where mile long bridges cross an enormous lake
From I have to walk that mile just to get home.
I am from the marketplace buzzing with activity,
Where people push one another to get a look at the vendors.
From finding goods of every kind,
From metal working and pottery to fine art and clothing.
I am from the farm that floats,
From working all day to feed a great city.
I am from the taxes of a king,
Where all our hard work goes to feed his belly.
I am from the sun god needing strength,
From captives being lead into the temple,
From their cries of help and mercy,
From none coming out but the sun rising the next day.
I am from the great temples of my people,
Where the sun shines through the cracks,
Creating amazing images of the stars.
I am from climbing the steps to the top,
From being met with the greatest view of the city.
I am from our god coming as a strange man,
From over 800 of them marching into our city.
I am from victims of a disease of spots,
From war with this “God”,
From him stabbing our leader with a sword of steel.
I am from fighting for life,
From escaping back into the jungle.
From finally becoming a true son of the Aztecs.
