Should animals have legal rights? Does Canada need mandatory military service? Should the

reference books and more.

Kindergarten and Beyond! (3 to 5 years)
This hands-on, six week program, is designed for Parents/Caregivers and their children to learn
important early literacy skills that will help children to succeed in school. Parents/Caregivers will
learn fun activities they can do at home with their child to continue the early literacy learning. Parent/
Caregiver participation is required. Children must be between the ages of 3 and 5 upon registering.
Siblings are not allowed to attend. Registration is required.

Do you want to develop your public speaking skills?
Effective public speakers become better leaders. Gain

Ontario Turtles! (6 to 12 years)
Join Kawartha Turtle Trauma Centre as we explore the secret world of turtles in
Ontario and find out why Ontario needs a Turtle Hospital. Learn about the
different species and follow the story of what happens to an injured turtle
that is admitted to the hospital up until its release day. Meet our special
guest, “Paddy”, a live snapping turtle, to learn the secret behind his
snap! Registration is required and begins Monday, February

Vote for which author should win the 2013 Forest of Reading Award for your age category! This
prestigious award is decided by children! Pick up the list of nominated books at any local branch

                                              Are you a master Lego brick builder? Do you love creating
                                              amazing constructions? Want to show off your skills? The
                                              Pickering Public Library is holding a contest for all builders
                                              to demonstrate their Legomania. Build your most impressive
                                              Lego brick creation and bring it to the library to enter in our
                                              contest. The subject can be anything you can imagine, from
                                              spaceships to submarines, cars to cattle, just go and build it!
                                              Registration is required.

Story Contest
Do you enjoy writing? Create an entry for the Library’s March Break Short Story Contest. For full

The Rules:
 1.	 Short story can be no longer than two pages
 2.	 The theme this year is outdoor adventure
 3.	 The short story must begin with the line, “I was walking through the forest when…”
 4.	 Writers must have their own Pickering Public Library card
 5.	 Fully completed entry form must accompany short story
 6.	 Entries will be divided into the following age categories: JK- SK, grades 1 - 3, 4 - 6, 7 – 8, 9 - 12

     An old t-shirt finds new life under the crafting guidance of
