7. ASHOK CHAKRA
Awarded for most conspicuous bravery, or some
act of daring or pre-eminent act of valour or self-sacrifice otherwise than in
the face of the enemy. The decoration may be awarded posthumously. If a
recipient of the Chakra shall again perform such an act of gallantry as would
have made him or her eligible to receive the Chakra, such further act of
gallantry shall be recognized by a Bar to be attached to the riband by which
the Chakra is suspended and, for every subsequent act of gallantry, an
additional Bar shall be added and every such Bar, a replica of the Chakra in
miniature shall be added to the riband when worn alone

The Indian Hockey Federation was formed at Gwalior in 1925.
India joined the International Hockey Federation (FIH) in 1928.
In the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Dhyan Chand, the captain of the team,
scored 11 out of 38 goals.
The first sporting achievement of independent India was the 1948
Olympic hockey gold medal.
India has won a grand total of 8 Olympic gold medals in hockey.
Sansarpur, a tiny village on the outskirts of Jalandhar, has the distinction
of producing 9 Olympians - Gurmit Singh (1932), Udham Singh (1952,
'56, '60, '64), Gurdev Singh (1956), Darshan Singh (1964), Jagjit Singh
(1964, '68), Balbir Singh - Services, Balbir Singh - Punjab and Tarsem
Singh (1968), and the World Cup winning captain Ajitpal Singh (1968,
'72, '76).
