Rivers were heavily used for transportation in early Florida before roads and railroads were constructed. The Ocklawaha River was particularly important, used by steamboats to access Silver Springs and transport prominent figures. However, as railroads reached more areas in the late 1800s, river transportation declined. Early roads in Florida only extended a few miles outside cities and towns, with paths and trails beyond.
