Rakesh has more than 10 years of experience. He has handled Prospect Mapping, Resource

With working experience in the most arduous conditions in the deep bowels of the earth at ultra depths
of 3219 m at Kolar Gold Mines, he is an expert in Mine planning, Production, Project execution, Mine
Ventilation, Shaft Sinking, High speed mine development, Disaster Management, Pollution Control and
Environmental Management.
His Optimized Blast Design developed at the Iron Ore Giant, Kudremukh Iron Ore Company, Earned him

Recipient of MEAI’s “Gold Medal Award (2006)” for outstanding contribution in the mining industry,
Geominetech’s “Award of Excellence (2012-13)” for Mine Safety and Risk Management and a
“Yeoman Service Medal (1983)” of BGML for saving 3 lives at a site of civil disaster in 1983, Mr.

Dr. Kolay has more than 40 years of experience. He has extensive experience in corporate
strategy, mine planning, high volume growth of production, implementation of mine projects
and washery projects. His significant projects of recent time are as follows:
• Presented to MOC, the Mining Plan, for Kerendari ‘A’ Coal Project(6 MTPA) and Chattibariatu Coal
Project (7 MTPA) of NTPC. Ltd. Feasibility Reports,final version of both Projects have been approved
by NTPC . Mining Plans of both projects have been approved by the Government. He was Team
leader for Kerendari A, Mine, 395m ultimate depth . Notwithstanding adverse geo-mining conditions,
about 26% IRR, could be projected in the F.R.
• Prepared Mining Plan for Taraimar Coal Block. Approved by MOC. 3 MT from OC and I MT from Underground,3 coal seams,
annual production.
• Worked as one of the two Indian experts along with two German experts in EU funded project for Beneficiation Options of LVHRC
coal of Jharia Coalfields and submitted Final Report. E.U named Dr SM Kolay as one Expert. After investigations in and
determination of washability characteristics of low volatile high rank coal of V/VI/VII seam, appropriate washing circuits for
maximising the yield of processed clean coal characterised by an ash content of 18+/-0.5% were designed along with concept of a
pilot scale processing plant for the above coal qualities with 0.5 to 1 Mt/y raw coal feeding capacity, generating also a secondary
coal product at 34% ash. On materialisation, the strategy can save India import of atleast 6 MT coking coal annually. The report
has been approved by the E.U.
• Prepared pre-feasibility report, on behalf of PWC for a coal mine(Kerendari B& C) to feed 4000 MW Tilaya UMPP, so as to arrive
at the least cost option in the financial model, which is partly linked to the minimal cost of power. The Mine was designed by Dr
Kolay for an annual target coal production of 22 MT. Cost per Tonne as per the Plan prepared was minimal, probably lower than
that worked by the company who won the bid. Additional coal production sustaining another 1000MW power generation was
planned.
• Detailed Pre-feasibility Report for Moher Coal Project (15 MTPA) with least cost option, as a retained advisor for Lanco Group
who got short-listed as the bidder with minimum quoted tariff of Re 1.19/unit(Sasan UMPP).Contribution of the team was
appreciated by the Management of Lanco. 50 cu m Draglines were planned for the first time in the country in the Pre-feasibility
report.
• Prepared Mineral Experts Report on three coal assets of a coal company as an associate consultant to facilitate listing in London
Stock Exchange. One OC in Chattisgarh and Two Underground Mines in Maharashtra.
