APPENDIX A: ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON PREVENTION PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH
There are currently available best practices, cutting edge, very large return on investment,
prevention programs that address multiple risk factors among youth such as: underage
drinking, binge drinking, DWI, drug use, bullying, delinquency, violence, teen pregnancy, poor
school performance, and more. Two such complimentary programs are:
1. PAX Good Behavior Game (http://goodbehaviorgame.org/) – “Four Miracles happen when
children go to school, and these Miracles can grow for a child’s whole life. A child’s teacher is
the agent of those Miracles. The First Miracle involves acquiring the ability to read, thus
allowing a child to learn the wisdom of generations who have gone before us. The Second
Miracle comes from learning to write, thereby enabling a child to share wisdom with the
current and future generations. The Third Miracle happens when a child learns to compute the
orderliness of the world with mathematics, thereby allowing a child to create and test new
things for the world’s betterment. The Fourth Miracle evolves as a child acquires PAX— the
mental ability to sustain attention, to self-regulate or self-manage, and to cooperate with
others intentionally to create peace, productivity, health and happiness for self and others, so
that all of this repeats the cycle of the Four Miracles for future generations. The PAX Good
Behavior Game is the teacher invented, scientifically proven tool that allows every teacher to
perform the Fourth Miracle.”
2. Be Above the Influence Social Marketing and Education Campaign (reinforces and
strengthens all community wide existing and new prevention and health programs) - it is a
locally created Health & Wellness campaign using part of the name from the national “Above
the Influence” campaign from the Office of the National Drug Control Policy, ONDCP, and it is
strategically planned, operationalized, implemented, and evaluated by the Bernalillo County
Department of Substance Abuse Programs, BC-DSAP. In 3 and ½ years the campaign has brought
over 330 community partners onboard including all APS, all Private, all Catholic Schools, all BC
community centers and libraries, the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council, the ABQ International
Sunport, UNM Lobos, Army and Air National Guard, MADD, YMCA, and many more local, county,
state, and national organizations.
