DO get rid of clutter.
In a small apartment or home, clutter is your worst enemy.
It is frustrating and can make even the largest rooms feel
smaller. Kick off your small space interior decorating by
thoroughly de-cluttering. If you haven’t used or worn it in
the past six months, take it to the nearest consignment store
or give it away. If you come across boxes filled with items you never truly liked in the first place, throw
them out. If you didn’t like them two years ago, you are not going to like them now or in the future.
DO store sentimental keepsakes and non-essential items in hidden spaces.
Storage is the best kept secret to small space living. Some homes provide extra storage areas such as
linen closets, garages and extra cabinets. However, if your home does not provide any additional stor-

DO let light in.
Using drapes made of lighter fabrics are a great way to let in natural light. If your space has limited
windows, bring in extra lamps and recessed lighting. Another great way to bring in more light is to use
mirrors. Mirrors are a great way to give the impression of more light and an overall larger feel to the
space.
DON’T paint each room a different color.
One way professional interior decorators make small spaces feel larger is by using variations of the
same paint color throughout. This helps create the feel of an open floor plan, but allows you to dif-
ferentiate each room from the other. For example, in most apartments the kitchen, living and dining
room are not separate and generally all fall into one large room. Therefore, painting each area a differ-
ent color would make the room feel cut-off and not as open as it should. Yet, if you choose one base
color and paint three variations of it, each room will flow into the next but keep its individuality.
DON’T go overboard with too many smaller furniture pieces.
Most people who live in small spaces opt for smaller pieces of furniture. If you go with smaller furni-
ture, it is almost 100 percent going to fit into your home. However, beware of putting too many pieces
of small furniture in your space. If there is too much going on, the already small space will feel clut-
tered and tight.

DON’T be afraid to use larger-scale furniture.
When it comes to furnishing a small apartment or house, most people tend to shy away from large
pieces of furniture. Many are afraid that large pieces will not fit properly and end up overwhelming the
space. Believe it or not, many interior decorators actually encourage the use of large pieces of furniture
in smaller spaces. Having a large piece can be inviting and create drama in a small space. For example,
a large sofa with clean-lines could seat several guests comfortably and serve as the design focal point
of the room. However, with big furniture, less is always more. Pick a few anchor pieces to make up the
small space and add additional personality with smaller elements.
