2. PROGRESS ON THE PATHWAY
• Started nearly 10 years ago
• Informed by Shaping the best research
professionals consultation carried out by UK
Clinical Research Collaboration
• Intention to develop a pathway to offer nurses,
midwives and AHPs the opportunity to pursue a
clinical academic career
3. CHALLENGES IN DEVELOPMENT OF THE
PATHWAY
• Funding, mentorship and managerial support were
early challenges identified in the consultation
• But implementation saw success across the awards
at Master’s level, PhD, Clinical Lectureship and
Senior Clinical Lectureship during the first 3 rounds
of the scheme that were funded
4. PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE
• Opportunity now in place to pursue a clinical
academic career
• Increase to the professions’ evidence base
• Impact on quality of care and outcomes for service
users and patients
5. HEE MANDATE 2013-2015
• To develop a more flexible workforce that is able to
respond to the changing patterns of service and
embrace research and innovation
• To support clinical academic careers for health
professionals and seek to increase numbers of staff
with a proper understanding of research and its role
in improving health outcomes
6. ONGOING PROGRESS
• Internships now available
• Robust and developing mentorship scheme
• Increase in quality and demand by applicants
• Individuals pursuing the pathway
• Success of awardees in funding, development of
research programmes, influencing best practice
and leadership
7. AND NOW TO THE FUTURE
• Still need to develop opportunities for those who
are excellent but not in research-intensive
institutions
• Remain challenges with managerial support – this
is a key objective for CAHPR
• CAHPR has an ongoing remit to support research
capacity-building for AHPs, to promote research
collaborations and for strategic influencing
• Good luck with your applications!!
