Our consultants are experts in mobile, social, business process management, and other areas.
However, with this opportunity comes new, unique challenges. Here are three pillars you will need to consider in your mobile application strategy.Mobile and social interactions are changing business models in every industry. I don’t have to tell you that mobile device usage is exploding. Just a few years ago, all we had to worry about was whether our company had a decent web site. With all of the new mobile devices and the advances in social business, we are facing a full scale revolution of how we interact with our coworkers, customers, and business partners. There will be a projected 10 billion mobile devices by 2020. We all know people who have moved from carrying a single BlackBerry, to now carrying multiple smartphones, at least one tablet, and other specialized devices such as wifi connected cameras. I know of several of my fellow IBM Champions who have at least 5 devices on their person all of the time. If we consider other mobile devices such as mobile sensors, connected automobiles, and other telemetry, I wouldn’t be surprised if 10 billion is a low number!

At a business level, there are enormous opportunities in the mobile revolution. We can help you take advantage of mobile applications to increase productivity, improve processes, and better connect with your customers. Consumers and business are choosing who they partner with based on your ability to directly interact with them when and how they want it.We have seen similar revolutions before. In the 90’s, when the web was first gaining traction, FedEx and UPS jumped to leading positions in their industries by leveraging the data in their back end logistics systems and getting customers to choose them for the simple feature of being able to track their packages through the system. There is great opportunity here for you to build competitive differentiators as well.
However, with this opportunity comes new, unique challenges. Here are three pillars you will need to consider in your mobile application strategy.Mobile and social interactions are changing business models in every industry. But wait! Everyone keeps using the word ‘mobile’, but this is really about multi-channel communications with your customers, employees, and business partners.People these days expect to be able to get the information they need and interact with your business through whatever channel is at hand, but with a consistent experience and capability across platforms. This ties into the business model changes I mentioned on the previous slide and means that you need to consider the appropriate user experience for each interaction, whether it is through a mobile Portal site, through a mobile device, or even through business interactions triggered from telemetry or geolocation updates.Through all of this, you will also need a slick and clean user interface designed to give the user a great experience. Many customers, including myself, now decide who to do business with based on the quality of their web and mobile experiences. I would much rather work with a company that is going to give me proper visibility and control of our interactions than one that gives me little information and forces me to call an automated number, work with a broken web site, or worse, expects me to send them a fax to update information.
However, with this opportunity comes new, unique challenges. Here are three pillars you will need to consider in your mobile application strategy.Mobile and social interactions are changing business models in every industry. Multi-channel applications require different approaches. Initially, we all focused on providing mobile web experiences, and IBM recently delivered great features in Portl 8 to address the responsive design needs of web applications to handle the multiple mobile browsers and differing screen sizes of today’s devices. On the other side, companies have worked on building native applications for each device OS and OS version. This gives you the best performance and full access to the device capabilities, but it is also very expensive to develop and maintain applications across platforms and to keep up with the flood of new devices. In this model, you also have to build and maintain the application support servers to provide push notification and integration with your backend systems.A new model has emerged for hybrid applications which leverage familiar web technologies such as HTML 5 and Javascript along with native adapters to build cross-platform, native applications that can interact with the platform's features and be deployed to an app store.
However, with this opportunity comes new, unique challenges. Here are three pillars you will need to consider in your mobile application strategy.Mobile and social interactions are changing business models in every industry.
