Nephrology is defined as a branch of medical
science that deals with diseases of the kidneys.
Vital parts of a properly functioning body, the
kidneys are a network of vessels and tubes that
remove waste products from blood. The kidneys are
responsible for acid-base regulation that can result
from diseases, drugs, and toxins.

including the National Kidney Foundation, which
was officially established in 1964 to promote kidney
research. The United States is also home to the
American Society of Nephrology, which was founded
