Delivered for WiLSWorld 2018 on July 24th in Madison, WI by Mitchell Davis, Chief Business Officer, BiblioLabs; Veronda J. Pitchford, Director of Membership and Resource Sharing, Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS) The future is continuously speeding up and consumer media players like Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Spotify take more and more mindshare and attention of the Gen X, Gen Y and Millennial markets. Over the past decade large media and technology companies such as these have radically changed end user expectations on the ease of having affordable, simple access to high quality digital content of all types. Meanwhile, brick and mortar institutions such as Borders, Barnes & Noble and a host of others have seen their fortunes decline as indie bookstores have seen a rise in popularity and sustainability. How are libraries positioned to compete and flourish in this new media landscape? What are libraries uniquely positioned to do well in the digital landscape for readers, researchers and consumers of content? What are the underlying dynamics that drive the business of libraries and keep vendors and libraries from working as true partners? Engaging in radical collaboration between libraries, vendors and publishers can produce better access, content and experiences sprinkled with delight for readers that could become the rallying cry for all the work we all do.

Rachel Frick, OCLC Executive Director of the OCLC Research Library Partnership, reviews some of the broad agenda items and recent publications related to the work of OCLC Research. Rachel is then joined for two presentations on specific research topics. First, Sharon Streams (OCLC Director of WebJunction) and Monika Sengul-Jones (OCLC Wikipedian-in-Residence) present on “Public Libraries and Wikipedia.” Next, Kenning Arlitsch (Dean, Montana State University Library) and Jeff Mixter (OCLC Senior Software Engineer) share their findings on “Accurate Institutional Repository Download Measurement using RAMP, the Repository Analytics and Metrics Portal.”

Presentation at EMTACL10, http://www.ntnu.no/ub/emtacl/ Guus van den Brekel Central medical library, UMCG Virtual Research Networks: towards Research 2.0 In the next few years, the further development of social, educational and research networks – with its extensive collaborative possibilities – will be dictating how users will search for, manage and exchange information. The network – evolved by technology – is changing the user's behaviour and that will affect the future of information services. Many envision a possible leading role for libraries in collaboration and community building services. Users are not only heavily using new tools, but are also creating and shaping their own preferred tools. Today's students are incorporating Web 2.0 skills in daily life, in their social and learning environments. Tomorrow's research staff will expect to be able to use their preferred tools and resources within their work environment. Today's ánd tomorrow's libraries should support students and staff in the learning and research process by integrating library services and resources into their environments.

Rose Holley, Special Collections Curator at UNSW Canberra discusses the findings of her research into crowdsourcing based curation. Using the digitised historic Australian Newspapers as an example, she looks at how the functionality and interface was developed in close relationship with the users, and how this led on to text correction of newspaper articles. It is nearly ten years since this pioneering project began and the motivations and achievements of the 50,000 volunteers are examined over this time. She questions how successfully the goal of improving text quality and therefore search has been achieved. She proposes that if a similar project was begun now then artificial intelligence software would be used such as OverProof post OCR correction tool to improve the quality of the text. OverProof has been trained on the manual corrections of the Australian newspaper corpus and trials demonstrate it is able to dramatically improve the quality of the corpus. Volunteer text correction could still continue afterwards for difficult text but the software would do the main donkey work, allowing users to have a better quality search.

As behaviors change in a network environment, we have seen growing interest in ethnographic and user-centered design approaches. This presentation introduces this topic. It also explores changes in how we manage collections as an illustration of this shift towards thinking of the library in the life of the user.

The arguments which promote the use and potential of open data in education can trace their roots back to scholarly communication communities. The close symbiosis between the Web as we know it and the values and working practices of scholars in higher educational institutions has been acknowledged. The work of HEIs is complex and extends well beyond research and education. Education is a costly and increasingly competitive business. Costs are associated not only with research and education but with a vast array of back office administrative functions and demands to publish performance indicators to the public domain. This presentation will argue that HEIs are in a powerful position to couple the insights which accrue thanks to their roles as creators and early adopters of open data. Open data practices afford gains which complement the exchange of new knowledge, and the sharing of knowledge and information for public good - especially if it has been funded by the public purse. Internally, insightful use of private open data had the potential to streamline administrative and educational processes. Evolving understandings of the potential and power of data driven approaches may enable institutions to gain economic and reputational advantage potentially driving down internal costs, streamlining aspects of the research process, making positive contributions to teaching and the support of teaching and learning, along with enhancing services which promote educational choice and student recruitment."
