1. When you look at a menu the first thing your eyes go towards is the center. This is where you
get your first impression which can be the deciding factor that persuades your final decision. The
“focal point” is important because it captures the reader’s attention. You can be very persuasive
with the outcome you want in a menu by putting specific items as your focal point.
2. Depending on the menu’s design the movement of your eyes can vary. For a one panel menu it
would be start at focal point, top and read down, and then return to middle. If it were a two panel
menu it would start off with the focal point, read down, return to focal point then read up, top
right corner of the back, then read down, then return to focal point. And then if it were a three
panel menu you would again start at the focal point, move over to the top of the right fold, back
to the front fold but on the top, downward on the left fold, back up and through the focal point,
downward from top to bottom of right panel then back to focal point.
3. In most cases, food and culture can go hand in hand. Different elements of culture can be
closely related to different aspects of food. Where a person is born and raised can directly
influence their decision when it comes to what kind of food they enjoy. The person will grow up
eating certain ingredients and recipes native to their homeland and that is the kind of food that
they will directly enjoy no matter where they end up living. Religion can directly influence a
person’s eating habits when it comes to food. Depending on what is seen as proper a person may
only be able to eat certain kinds of food at certain times of the year or for different holidays.
Other religions will ban different kinds of food that directly go against their beliefs. Life style is
another element of culture that can be directly linked with food. A person with a high amount of
wealth and a successful job is more likely to go out to eat and purchase higher quality food. A
person that is not as wealthy may opt to cook their own food and spend more time picking out
affordable products at a grocery store. The same is said for someone who is on the go or has a lot
of free time, this will also affect what and how they eat. Language can be a strong barrier when it
comes to the food industry. If a Spanish speaking customer goes to a strictly English speaking
establishment with no translators on site, that person is more than likely going to turn around and
leave before they are even seated. Most food products are now being advertised in multiple
different languages in order to cater to all different kinds of ethnicities. The time of which a meal
is to be eaten also directly influences what product is chosen, what ingredients are used, and how
the food is eaten. A breakfast meal will consist of a lighter, smaller portion where as a dinner
will have a heavier, larger quantity of food.
5. Food is extremely vital to the tourism industry. Many countries are visited just for the food
that they offer, which usually cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Different techniques,
ingredients, and combinations of food are used in one country vs. another and may make one
country a greater travel destination based off of exactly what is offered in these categories. Food
can also offer its own source of revenue for the travel industry. A hotel that a person stays at will
more than likely have some form of a bar or restaurant within its establishment that will offer
guests a place to relax and dine while still bringing in profit for the hotel. A cruise ship, taking
customers to different destinations, will make a large portion of its profit from the many dining
experiences the guests will encounter while on board. Guests will always need to eat and what is
more fantastic than enjoying an exciting or romantic dinner while taking in the great view you
just paid so much to be a part of. Food creates memories, which in turn, helps the guests
remember the experiences they had while traveling and hopefully make them want to come back.
6. Fish is largely prominent in the British diet mostly because of the supply being readily
available to them. The country is completely surrounded by water and covered in ports. Fishing
is only naturally going to be a large industry taking place; thusly fish becomes a popular choice
for dinner. Meat is also important to the British because of the strong history that it holds within
the culture. Back in the times of castles, kings, and queens, meat was seen as a sign of power
because only the strongest men would consume meat.
7. A culturally heterogenic country will have a greater variety in its food choice because of many
different factors. One reason may be the heritage of the people living in different regions of the
country. The United States does not have one specific kind of person living in every region of the
country. The south has different tastes compared to the north and the same goes for the east vs.
the west coast. The second factor would have to be the climate and what ingredients are more
prominently found within the given area. If it is sunny and good weather all the time then
ingredients will grow for longer seasons and be offered fresh longer in the local cuisine. If it
snows for three to five months out of the year then certain ingredients will not be around as
often. Different dishes offered in the south would not be accepted in the northern person’s home
and vice versa. When it comes to national restaurant chains, they have to offer food that caters to
multiple different kinds of people so this in turn allows the country to offer a greater variety of
food.
8. A country or region can become a food destination based off of a few different factors. The
country may be known for a specific ingredient that can only be found within that country and
that will in turn make that country visited by many people searching for this said ingredient. The
second factor may purely be the countries’ history. Everyone wants to visit Italy, for example,
because it has become so well known for the numerous famous restaurants, chefs, and
ingredients that reside within the country. All of the popularity based off of food for this
attraction has been passed along by word of mouth, television, or simply imported ingredients
that comes from there. A third factor would have to be the climate. If a country or region is
sunny all the time, has beautifully warm weather, and ingredients that are fresh all year round,
then this place will more than likely become a huge tourist destination for food.
9. Geography can impact a culture in many different ways. One way depends on the general
layout of the land. A culture will form around what is readily available for them. An example
would be if wood is not a naturally occurring item in a specific country then their homes would
be built out of some other material. If the land is mostly mountains, a lot of products and
basically necessities will more than likely be delivered to the given area. Food is directly affected
by the geography of a given area. If the climate is not suitable for a specific product then that
item cannot be growth within the given country. Certain ingredients can only be growth in
certain parts of the world because of their sensitivity to different climates. A person will not see
oranges being grown somewhere that is snows for half the year. They will be found somewhere
that it is sunny all year round. The same goes for the land. Most vegetables and fruits need to be
growth on flat fertile land. A hilly and rocky region with rough soil will not be able to grow the
same ingredients.
11. The French region of Champagne is where the drink champagne is produced. France is also a
large producer of bordeaux and burgundy just like its champagne. Dijon mustard is produced in
multiple regions all over the world and is not limited to one specific region. The most expensive
truffles are from regions in both France and Italy but truffles can also be found in Asia and North
America.
12. Muslim and Jewish dietary rules:
Similarities:
Swine are prohibited by both sets of laws.
Both generally forbids the consumption of amphibians such as frogs.
Almost all insects are not kosher.
To be kosher, aquatic animals must have scales and fins
Gelatin is only permissible if it comes from a permissible
Cheese is permissible so long as the rennet used to make the cheese is permissible.
Both agree to involve cutting across the neck of the animal with a non-serrated blade in
one clean attempt in order to sever the main blood vessels.
Both require that the spinal cord be avoided during slaughter
Both require draining the blood of the animal.
Differences:
For a substance to be Halal, it must not contain alcohol of any kind. If your Jewish the
laws allows the consumption of any sort of alcohol, as long as it has no non-kosher
ingredients
The list of animals forbidden by kashrut is more restrictive, as kashrut requires that, to be
kosher, mammals must chew cud as well as have cloven hooves. halal only requires that
an animal survive on grass and leaves.
Jews prohibits shellfish, such as lobster, shrimp, clams, and oysters whereas Muslims
permit the consumption of all seafood.
During the Jewish holiday Passover, there is an additional set of restrictions, requiring
that no chametz
Kashrut prohibits mixing meat and dairy products, as well as consuming or even profiting
from them.
In Judaism, the permissibility of food accompanies a vast corpus of secondary factors.

  • 1. Ashley Alix FSM 2065 Professor Boker 11/3/10 1. When you look at a menu the first thing your eyes go towards is the center. This is where you get your first impression which can be the deciding factor that persuades your final decision. The “focal point” is important because it captures the reader’s attention. You can be very persuasive with the outcome you want in a menu by putting specific items as your focal point. 2. Depending on the menu’s design the movement of your eyes can vary. For a one panel menu it would be start at focal point, top and read down, and then return to middle. If it were a two panel menu it would start off with the focal point, read down, return to focal point then read up, top right corner of the back, then read down, then return to focal point. And then if it were a three panel menu you would again start at the focal point, move over to the top of the right fold, back to the front fold but on the top, downward on the left fold, back up and through the focal point, downward from top to bottom of right panel then back to focal point. 3. In most cases, food and culture can go hand in hand. Different elements of culture can be closely related to different aspects of food. Where a person is born and raised can directly influence their decision when it comes to what kind of food they enjoy. The person will grow up eating certain ingredients and recipes native to their homeland and that is the kind of food that they will directly enjoy no matter where they end up living. Religion can directly influence a person’s eating habits when it comes to food. Depending on what is seen as proper a person may only be able to eat certain kinds of food at certain times of the year or for different holidays. Other religions will ban different kinds of food that directly go against their beliefs. Life style is another element of culture that can be directly linked with food. A person with a high amount of wealth and a successful job is more likely to go out to eat and purchase higher quality food. A person that is not as wealthy may opt to cook their own food and spend more time picking out affordable products at a grocery store. The same is said for someone who is on the go or has a lot of free time, this will also affect what and how they eat. Language can be a strong barrier when it comes to the food industry. If a Spanish speaking customer goes to a strictly English speaking establishment with no translators on site, that person is more than likely going to turn around and leave before they are even seated. Most food products are now being advertised in multiple different languages in order to cater to all different kinds of ethnicities. The time of which a meal is to be eaten also directly influences what product is chosen, what ingredients are used, and how the food is eaten. A breakfast meal will consist of a lighter, smaller portion where as a dinner will have a heavier, larger quantity of food. 5. Food is extremely vital to the tourism industry. Many countries are visited just for the food that they offer, which usually cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Different techniques, ingredients, and combinations of food are used in one country vs. another and may make one
  • 2. country a greater travel destination based off of exactly what is offered in these categories. Food can also offer its own source of revenue for the travel industry. A hotel that a person stays at will more than likely have some form of a bar or restaurant within its establishment that will offer guests a place to relax and dine while still bringing in profit for the hotel. A cruise ship, taking customers to different destinations, will make a large portion of its profit from the many dining experiences the guests will encounter while on board. Guests will always need to eat and what is more fantastic than enjoying an exciting or romantic dinner while taking in the great view you just paid so much to be a part of. Food creates memories, which in turn, helps the guests remember the experiences they had while traveling and hopefully make them want to come back. 6. Fish is largely prominent in the British diet mostly because of the supply being readily available to them. The country is completely surrounded by water and covered in ports. Fishing is only naturally going to be a large industry taking place; thusly fish becomes a popular choice for dinner. Meat is also important to the British because of the strong history that it holds within the culture. Back in the times of castles, kings, and queens, meat was seen as a sign of power because only the strongest men would consume meat. 7. A culturally heterogenic country will have a greater variety in its food choice because of many different factors. One reason may be the heritage of the people living in different regions of the country. The United States does not have one specific kind of person living in every region of the country. The south has different tastes compared to the north and the same goes for the east vs. the west coast. The second factor would have to be the climate and what ingredients are more prominently found within the given area. If it is sunny and good weather all the time then ingredients will grow for longer seasons and be offered fresh longer in the local cuisine. If it snows for three to five months out of the year then certain ingredients will not be around as often. Different dishes offered in the south would not be accepted in the northern person’s home and vice versa. When it comes to national restaurant chains, they have to offer food that caters to multiple different kinds of people so this in turn allows the country to offer a greater variety of food. 8. A country or region can become a food destination based off of a few different factors. The country may be known for a specific ingredient that can only be found within that country and that will in turn make that country visited by many people searching for this said ingredient. The second factor may purely be the countries’ history. Everyone wants to visit Italy, for example, because it has become so well known for the numerous famous restaurants, chefs, and ingredients that reside within the country. All of the popularity based off of food for this attraction has been passed along by word of mouth, television, or simply imported ingredients that comes from there. A third factor would have to be the climate. If a country or region is sunny all the time, has beautifully warm weather, and ingredients that are fresh all year round, then this place will more than likely become a huge tourist destination for food.
  • 3. 9. Geography can impact a culture in many different ways. One way depends on the general layout of the land. A culture will form around what is readily available for them. An example would be if wood is not a naturally occurring item in a specific country then their homes would be built out of some other material. If the land is mostly mountains, a lot of products and basically necessities will more than likely be delivered to the given area. Food is directly affected by the geography of a given area. If the climate is not suitable for a specific product then that item cannot be growth within the given country. Certain ingredients can only be growth in certain parts of the world because of their sensitivity to different climates. A person will not see oranges being grown somewhere that is snows for half the year. They will be found somewhere that it is sunny all year round. The same goes for the land. Most vegetables and fruits need to be growth on flat fertile land. A hilly and rocky region with rough soil will not be able to grow the same ingredients. 11. The French region of Champagne is where the drink champagne is produced. France is also a large producer of bordeaux and burgundy just like its champagne. Dijon mustard is produced in multiple regions all over the world and is not limited to one specific region. The most expensive truffles are from regions in both France and Italy but truffles can also be found in Asia and North America. 12. Muslim and Jewish dietary rules: Similarities: Swine are prohibited by both sets of laws. Both generally forbids the consumption of amphibians such as frogs. Almost all insects are not kosher. To be kosher, aquatic animals must have scales and fins Gelatin is only permissible if it comes from a permissible Cheese is permissible so long as the rennet used to make the cheese is permissible. Both agree to involve cutting across the neck of the animal with a non-serrated blade in one clean attempt in order to sever the main blood vessels. Both require that the spinal cord be avoided during slaughter Both require draining the blood of the animal. Differences: For a substance to be Halal, it must not contain alcohol of any kind. If your Jewish the laws allows the consumption of any sort of alcohol, as long as it has no non-kosher ingredients The list of animals forbidden by kashrut is more restrictive, as kashrut requires that, to be kosher, mammals must chew cud as well as have cloven hooves. halal only requires that an animal survive on grass and leaves. Jews prohibits shellfish, such as lobster, shrimp, clams, and oysters whereas Muslims permit the consumption of all seafood.
