Library Science department actually has our very own librarian: Myoung Wilson Alexander Library 169 College Avenue New Brunswick NJ 09801-1163 p. 732-932-7129, ext 126 f. 732-932-1101 [email_address] Rutgers University Libraries 01/14/12 kf 2004

Rutgers Library catalog changed name from IRIS to – Catalog, in Fall 2011. It’s now referred to as Rutgers Library Catalog. Rutgers University Libraries 01/14/12 kf 2004

Link: http://rumaps.rutgers.edu/?id=C71819 The interface is different now, but it is actually worse for displaying on a presentation. the info is now presented in tabs and it is not as expansive as is shown above. Keeping the above picture for now. Lots of students use this library, so it’s generally quite busy. However, because it’s so busy, the reference desk is staffed until late (9pm?) and any new technology is generally introduced at here. Rutgers University Libraries 01/14/12 kf 2004
Rutgers University Libraries 01/14/12 kf 2004 Homepage for Alex Library. the café opened in 2011 Mention that the lecture hall at the SCC hosts many LIS talks.
Rutgers University Libraries 01/14/12 kf 2004 Just FYI- if something is at another library (say Busch), you can order it and pick it up at any of the circulating libraries. Only one doesn’t circulate, think it’s Art. I also don’t think it shows up as an option.
Generally if you’d like a book that RU Libraries doesn’t have you can order it from EZ Borrow, otherwise Inter Library Loan. Rutgers University Libraries 01/14/12 kf 2004

Your first time going into the library just ask them to activate your card. NO MORE PIN NUMBERS. Rutgers University Libraries 01/14/12 kf 2004
Rutgers University Libraries 01/14/12 kf 2004 Explain the search interface. Point out E-Z borrow. E-ZBorrow (PALCI) is an alternative to recalling a book. Point out the link to other catalogs, which is pretty existensive.
Find a book- By title: Something on Reference- Encyclopedia of women Checked out- Mole people Search by location- see things in ANNEX- have to order. By Subject: Nationalism Ruoff, K (good for advanced search) By Author: Linda Brent Actual author- Harriet Jacobs (Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl) Catalog is quite smart. Rutgers University Libraries 01/14/12 kf 2004 The link takes you to the policy page for the library- quiet involved. Since you have such a long check out period (faculty get even longer) and other students may need the materials, people can actually recall the book. If this happens you have 14 days to return the book. Generally, we at the library desk guide people to EZ Borrow, and I will guide you there now. This is for two reasons. it’s polite, you’re getting the book from a different means, and so not taking it from someone who is using it. It’s faster. Can get the book in 3-5 days instead of waiting 2 weeks plus delivery. That’s if the person turns the book in on time. So- if the book you want is checked out- Use the EZ Borrow option rather than recalling a book.

When searching for an article- need to search by journal title, then use the database (wherever it’s hosted) to find the actual article. Rutgers University Libraries 01/14/12 kf 2004
Rutgers University Libraries 01/14/12 kf 2004
Rutgers University Libraries 01/14/12 kf 2004 This is the long path- don’t generally go this route. Go by subject area. However- if looking for a particular journal & are more of a browser than a searcher- this is how you’ll find what you’re looking for. THOUSANDS of periodicals- it might take a while.
Rutgers University Libraries 01/14/12 kf 2004 For help in the library you can go to it, of course, call, email, and sometimes instant message.
Rutgers University Libraries 01/14/12 kf 2004 There are many different vendors for databases, and several different interfaces. Go to libraries databases. Click on first four and academic search primer. BIG NEWS in Summer 2011: Wilson Web was bought out by EBSCO.
Rutgers University Libraries 01/14/12 kf 2004 OUT DATED INFORMATION: It only searches these ones now: Academic Search Premier Web of Science WilsonWeb Omnifile I’ve never used this. It’s pretty slow.

Rutgers University Libraries 01/14/12 kf 2004 RefWorks would be great if you were doing a dissertation or a thesis. For me- it’s a lot of work and a high learning curve for not much pay off for regular assignments. However- you do get people doing their thesis or their dissertation and will want some guidance with RefWorks. So- if your working in the University Libraries- you’ll want to at least explore this service. Tutorial is awesome. The link there has some great tutorials, but are rather time consuming.
Rutgers University Libraries 01/14/12 kf 2004 There is a neat ‘get it at RU’ feature on the web which rocks when doing research on the web.
Rutgers University Libraries 01/14/12 kf 2004 My Account- on top right of the library site. Re-new books, see documents you’ve ordered via ILL. See if you owe fines.
Rutgers University Libraries 01/14/12 kf 2004 For instance Factiva is a very expensive database and there is a limit to nine users at once. Ran into this with my Principals of Searching class. Have an assignment due and everyone is on the evening before trying to get it finished.
Rutgers University Libraries 01/14/12 kf 2004 In laymen's terms: Local = on campus Remote = off campus If you’re off campus- you’ll need to log in via the RU Libraries site. A yellow box in top left. Or it will prompt you going when going into a source that you need to be RU affiliated.

There’s a search feature for the RU website. Also- the ‘ask a librarian’ is there. During semester offers chat reference. Turn it off the last week of classes and for finals (get over whelmed). I’ve used it- always helpful. Rutgers University Libraries 01/14/12 kf 2004
