Tutenkhamen was pharaoh of Egypt from 1361-1352 BC. He died at the young age of 19. His tomb was discovered in 1922 by Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon in the Valley of the Kings near Luxor. When they opened the tomb, they found a breathtaking collection of treasures buried with Tutenkhamen over 3,000 years prior. Many connected to the tomb's excavation and discovery later died in strange circumstances, leading locals to believe there was a curse placed on the tomb. Howard Carter, who first entered the tomb, later died of natural causes.
4. Active and Passive Verbs
• Active verbs form more efficient and more powerful
sentences than passive verbs. This document will teach
you why and how to prefer active verbs.
• The subject of an active voice sentence performs the
action of the verb: “I throw the ball.”
• The subject of a passive voice sentence is still the
main character of the sentence, but something else
performs the action: “The ball is thrown by me.”
•

6. 1. How to Recognize Active and Passive Sentences
• Find the subject (the main character of the
sentence).
• Find the main verb (the action that the sentence
identifies).
• Examine the relationship between the subject
and main verb.
– Does the subject perform the action of the main verb? (If so,
the sentence is active.)
– Does the subject sit there while something else — named or
unnamed –performs an action on it? (If so, the sentence
is passive.)
– Can’t tell? If the main verb is a linking verb (“is,” “was,” “are,”
“seems (to be),” “becomes” etc.), then the verb functions like an
equals sign; there is no action involved — it merely describes
a state of being.
7. 2. Basic Examples ^
I love you.
subject: “I”
action: “loving”
relationship: The subject (“I”) is the one performing
the action (“loving”).
The sentence is active. You are loved by me.
subject: “you”
action: “loving”
relationship: The subject (“You”) sits passively while
the action (“loving”) is performed by somebody else
(“me”).
This sentence is passive.
8. Active : Passive: Simple Past
Active: Simple Past
1. The movie bored me.
2. The movie fascinated Jack.
3. The movie surprised them.
1.
2.
3.
Passive: Simple Past
I was bored by the movie.
Jack was fascinated by the movie.
They were surprised by the movie.
9. For example, in the sentence:
– The cat ate the mouse.
• the verb "ate" is in the active voice, but in the
sentence:
– The mouse was eaten by the cat.
• the verbal phrase "was eaten" is passive.
• In
– The hunter killed the bear.
• the verb "killed" is in the active voice, and the
doer of the action is the "hunter". To make
this passive:
– The bear was killed by the hunter.
• the verbal phrase "was killed" is followed by
the word "by" and then by the doer "hunter".
10. Exer cises on Passive
Use of Passive
Passive voice is used when the focus is on the action.
It is not important or not known, however, who or what
is performing the action.
Example: My bike was stolen.
In the example above, the focus is on the fact that my
bike was stolen. I do not know, however, who did it.
Sometimes a statement in passive is more polite than
active voice, as the following example shows:
Example: A mistake was made.
In this case, I focus on the fact that a mistake was
made, but I do not blame anyone (e.g. You have made
a mistake.).
11. Form of Passive
Subject + finite for m of to be + Past
Par ticiple (3r d column of ir re gular verbs)
Example: A letter was written.
When rewriting active sentences in passive
voice, note the following:
the object of the active sentence becomes the
subject of the passive sentence
the finite form of the verb is changed ( to be +
past participle)
the subject of the active sentence becomes the
object of the passive sentence (or is dropped)

Examples of Passive
TenseSubjectVerbObjectPresent
Rewriting an active sentence with two objects in
passive voice means that one of the two objects
becomes the subject, the other one remains an object.
Which object to transform into a subject depends on
what you want to put the focus on.
SubjectVerbObject 1Object 2Active:Ritawrotea
letterto me.Passive:A letterwas writtento meby
Rita.Passive:Iwas writtena letterby Rita..
As you can see in the examples, adding by Rita does
not sound very elegant. That’s why it is usually
dropped.
