II. REPORT SYNOPSIS
Biomarkers
Biomarker is a body constituent that identifies the cause and vulnerability to certain diseases. Biomarkers
can be broadly divided into the following two groups -
Biomarkers of Exposure – Usually applied for forecasting risks.
Therapeutic Biomarkers – Employed for analyzing, detecting and curing various diseases.
Biomarker can also be defined as the traits (biological, pathogenic, or pharmacological responses given out
by a patient to therapeutics) exhibited by a patient.
Biomarkers identification is fast gaining importance, especially in the field of medical research. Latest
innovations in the area of transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics are driving the trend.
Despite Systems Biology providing a better description and understanding of disease pathologies,
biomarker identification continues to face challenges.
Describing the dynamic range of proteins in plasma is a crucial problem for biomarker identification.
Human plasma is the easiest source for disease biomarker identification.
The complexity and the wide dynamic range in protein concentrations of human plasma, makes it difficult
to characterize as a potential biomarker identification and validation candidate.
This report analyzes the following biomarker identification technologies and therapeutic areas in which
biomarkers find applications.
Synopsis chapter of the report gives a summary of biomarkers segmented by identification technologies
and by therapeutic areas at global level and for each geographic region - North America, Europe, Asia-
Pacific and Rest of World (RoW).

BIOMARKERS - OUTLOOK
Global Biomarkers market is projected to grow at 21.8% compounded annually from 2005 through 2020.
This growth would be driven mainly by integration of biomarkers into clinical trials.
Biomarkers are expected to increase productivity by identifying potential drug failures in initial stages,
leading to savings in time and costs.
Biomarkers are becoming an essential part of drug discovery process, bolstering efficiency and accuracy.
The United States (with 40% of global market share in 2008) is the world’s largest regional market. Due to
the cost advantage and access to the latest technology,
Asia-Pacific is expected to emerge as the fastest growing (XX.XX% during 2005-2020) market for
biomarkers……

IV. PRODUCT/TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH
Biomarkers are indicators of biologic processes. They simplify pharmaceutical development processes by
measuring biological, pharmacological and therapeutic responses of the human body.
The potential of biomarkers is immense ranging from applications in medical fields to industrial areas. The
need for biomarkers was realized almost 50 years back and since then this field remained in the limelight.
Genes, metabolites and proteins indicate the biological condition of the human system.
Along with conventional techniques including imaging, genomics and proteomics, various types of markers
are identified using high throughput technologies such as gene microarrays and metabolite NMR.
Leading biotechnology and pharmaceutical players are collaborating to develop innovative biomarker
identification technologies using mass spectrometry and NMR data.
Various data analysis challenges such as process related artifacts, inter-individual variability, and huge
amount of data makes the present automated metabolite marker discovery process complicated.
Thus, the process of biomarker identification is still predominantly manual that requires years of
experience in the fields of biology, mathematics, and advanced experimental technologies.
Biomarkers can also be defined as elements in blood, cells tissues or body fluids. A rise in the level of
biomarkers indicates the presence of certain type of cancer or abnormal growth in the body.
Some of the common biomarkers include CA 125, CA 15-3, and CEA PSA that deal with ovarian cancer,
breast cancer, and cancers related to gastro intestine and prostate gland. These are also termed as tumor
markers.
In the broader context, biomarkers can be termed as elements that indicate the state of a living cell or
organism. For instance, Rubidium chloride is used to analyze perfusion of heart tissues.
Biomarkers are used to identify and isolate cells in cell biology. Various cell varieties are isolated to study
and genetically modify plants to develop the desired traits.
Biomarkers also study the spread of various epidemics and pollution resulting from toxic gases. In such
cases, a biomarker is usually an external element or a substance that controls metabolic activities.
Biomarkers are termed as genetic markers since they are also used to sample DNA to detect symptoms,
causes of diseases and their vulnerability.
Biomarkers are termed as bio signatures in the fields of geology and astrobiology. This science also finds
application in the discovery of petroleum from the earth’s crust.
