Biosensors, a product of biochemistry, electrochemistry and electronics, are capable of performing
analytical tests using micro-volumes of samples and can produce results within minutes, which otherwise
takes hours or even days. Biosensors are standing examples for advanced technology applications in ultra-
microanalysis, with high quality output, that includes precision, accuracy, sensitivity and specificity, within
affordable prices.
Biosensor is a sensing device that generates a signal during the biochemical reaction. The reaction may be
within the analyte components or between the analyte and sensor components. Such a signal is
transformed into electric impulse and processes logically to produce a value that can be displayed on an
electronic screen or printed on paper or stored in memory chip for further interpretation.
A Biosensor is a conjugation of two functionalities - the bioreceptor and the transducer. The bioreceptor is
a bio-molecule that identifies the target analyte. The role of the transducer is to transform a recognition
event into a measurable signal. A special feature of the Biosensor is the integration of two components into
one single device that allows the measurement of a target analyte without the need for reagents. A typical
example is a glucose Biosensor that enables measurement of the concentration of a sample of blood
glucose by just placing the sample over the sensor.
Biosensors offer an opportunity in analysis, where conventional analytical instruments require regular and
vigorous evaluation to examine the validity of instrument, stability of reagent systems, and quality of
standards. The expenditure for such evaluations is significantly more over the expenditure on each test
performed. However, Biosensors with inbuilt self-calibration system or external calibration strips, are
calibrated within minutes and the calibrated data is stored in the memory chip.
Quick results, portable instrument and ease of use make the analysis world dependent on Biosensors. The
versatile applications in the fields of chemical, pharmaceutical, bio-molecular and microbial detection and

Biosensors are placed on the sample and the value is read. The sample is placed over the testing strip and
the value displays within few minutes. There is no need of reagents and also typical analytical procedures
such as dilution, separation, centrifugation, heating, cooling and drying. The sample required for analysis is
in micro liters, which means, traceable amounts of the sample is enough for analysis.

IV. PRODUCT/TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH
As the name suggests, a Biosensor is a device that transforms a biological response into an electrical signal
within biological system or without the use of a biological system.
In other words, a Biosensor is a device that first detects information on a physiological change or process
that is then recorded. The recorded information is then converted into electrical signal and transmitted.
Biosensors utilize biological materials to observe these physiological changes in a substance. This process of
conversion involves a transducer that combines with a biologically sensitive and selective component.
Biosensors are usually self-contained and therefore do not require addition of reagents to the sample
matrix. The biological recognition element is usually a protein or protein complex that is found together
with other components in the biological matrix and can identify a specific analyte.
Biosensors are considered to be an interface between a living body such as the human body, the
environment and an artificial system such as a robot or computer allowing exchange of information
between them. They can be said to be the reliable elements of rapid instruments and systems.
Biosensor exclusivity depends on:
 First selecting an appropriate bioreceptor molecule
 Selecting a good immobilization method
 Selecting a suitable transducer
 Developing a Biosensor keeping in mind measurement range, linearity and minimization of
interference
 Packaging the Biosensor
A Good Biosensor is:
 Highly specific towards the analyte and able to analyze wide range of concentrations
 Stable in normal storage conditions with reproducible results over a long period of time
 Free from small changes in physical parameters such as pH, viscosity, stirring and temperature
 That produces results accurately, precisely, reproducible and linear over the analytical range, without
the need of alteration of concentration
 Has good signal-to-noise ratio
 Biocompatible, non-toxic and antigen fee for invasive clinical analysis
 Easy to sterilize, free from fouling or proteolysis
 Cheap, small, portable and capable of being used by semi-skilled operators.
Classification of Biosensors
The function of a Biosensor is to eventually establish the nature and variety of the substance belonging to
the biological systems and the type of the transducer which is required for the development of the
Biosensor. The experimental conditions or the existing conditions for the use of the Biosensors such as the
conditions in which the sensor is being utilized, the susceptibly of the sensor used, whether the experiment
is for the quantitative analysis or qualitative analysis of the biological systems will influence the Biosensor
to be selected for the purpose.

The major criteria for the selection of the bioreceptor or transducer for developing a Biosensor is the
application or the purpose of the Biosensor in the situation. The responding time of the Biosensor,
calibration requirements and the capacity of reprocessing of the Biosensor are some of the other factors
that may influence and aid in the selection of the variety of bioreceptors or transducers to be used in the
Biosensor to be designed. The quantity of the analyte to be determined using a Biosensor or multiple

detection of the signals produced by the sensor mainly determine the Biosensor to be selected for the
purpose. An electronic Biosensor requires an electrical device to detect the signals where as
spectrophotometer is for detection of optical signals of a Biosensor. The main aim of the researchers in the
field is to develop a unique and versatile Biosensor that can detect the wide range of analytes that may or
may not detected by other conventional methods.

REPORT SYNOPSIS Biosensors, a product of biochemistry, electrochemistry and electronics, are capable of performing analytical tests using micro-volumes of samples and can produce results within minutes, which otherwise takes hours or even days. Biosensors are standing examples for advanced technology applications in ultra- microanalysis, with high quality output, that includes precision, accuracy, sensitivity and specificity, within affordable prices. Biosensor is a sensing device that generates a signal during the biochemical reaction. The reaction may be within the analyte components or between the analyte and sensor components. Such a signal is transformed into electric impulse and processes logically to produce a value that can be displayed on an electronic screen or printed on paper or stored in memory chip for further interpretation. A Biosensor is a conjugation of two functionalities - the bioreceptor and the transducer. The bioreceptor is a bio-molecule that identifies the target analyte. The role of the transducer is to transform a recognition event into a measurable signal. A special feature of the Biosensor is the integration of two components into one single device that allows the measurement of a target analyte without the need for reagents. A typical example is a glucose Biosensor that enables measurement of the concentration of a sample of blood glucose by just placing the sample over the sensor. Biosensors offer an opportunity in analysis, where conventional analytical instruments require regular and vigorous evaluation to examine the validity of instrument, stability of reagent systems, and quality of standards. The expenditure for such evaluations is significantly more over the expenditure on each test performed. However, Biosensors with inbuilt self-calibration system or external calibration strips, are calibrated within minutes and the calibrated data is stored in the memory chip. PRODUCT/TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH As the name suggests, a Biosensor is a device that transforms a biological response into an electrical signal within biological system or without the use of a biological system. In other words, a Biosensor is a device that first detects information on a physiological change or process that is then recorded. The recorded information is then converted into electrical signal and transmitted. Biosensors utilize biological materials to observe these physiological changes in a substance. This process of conversion involves a transducer that combines with a biologically sensitive and selective component. Biosensors are usually self-contained and therefore do not require addition of reagents to the sample matrix. The biological recognition element is usually a protein or protein complex that is found together with other components in the biological matrix and can identify a specific analyte. Biosensors are considered to be an interface between a living body such as the human body, the environment and an artificial system such as a robot or computer allowing exchange of information between them. They can be said to be the reliable elements of rapid instruments and systems. Biosensor exclusivity depends on:  First selecting an appropriate bioreceptor molecule  Selecting a good immobilization method  Selecting a suitable transducer  Developing a Biosensor keeping in mind measurement range, linearity and minimization of interference  Packaging the Biosensor A Good Biosensor is:  Highly specific towards the analyte and able to analyze wide range of concentrations  Stable in normal storage conditions with reproducible results over a long period of time  Free from small changes in physical parameters such as pH, viscosity, stirring and temperature  That produces results accurately, precisely, reproducible and linear over the analytical range, without the need of alteration of concentration  Has good signal-to-noise ratio  Biocompatible, non-toxic and antigen fee for invasive clinical analysis  Easy to sterilize, free from fouling or proteolysis  Cheap, small, portable and capable of being used by semi-skilled operators. Classification of Biosensors The function of a Biosensor is to eventually establish the nature and variety of the substance belonging to the biological systems and the type of the transducer which is required for the development of the Biosensor. The experimental conditions or the existing conditions for the use of the Biosensors such as the conditions in which the sensor is being utilized, the susceptibly of the sensor used, whether the experiment is for the quantitative analysis or qualitative analysis of the biological systems will influence the Biosensor to be selected for the purpose.
