“TEACHING WITH TECHNOLOGY”

 Hooper, S & Rieber, L. P. (1995)
 pages 154-170
TECHNOLOGY AS A TEACHER’S LIBERATOR

 Classroom must become learner centered
 Students/Teachers form partnership with
  technology
(Cognition & Technology Group at
Vanderbilt, 1992)
WHAT IS TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION?

 Often misinterpreted as “how many
computers or videocassette recorders are in
  the classroom)
 Should be “applying ideas from various
sources to create the best learning
  environment possible for students”
A MODEL FOR THE ADOPTION OF TECHNOLOGY
IN EDUCATION

 Familiarization
                           Traditional
 Utilization Perspective

 Integration

 Reorientation
                           Contemporar
                           y Perspective
 Evolution
FAMILIARIZATION

 Initial exposure to technology
 Eg)a tutorial on specific software.
 Must then go on and use or you will forget.
UTILIZATION

 “Having a go!”
 Possible problem – “at least I gave it a try”
  and then not tried again
INTEGRATION

 Tasks or responsibilities designated to
  technology
 Teacher could not work without!
REORIENTATION

 Reconsider & Reconceptualize the purpose
  and function of the classroom
 Learner centered/partnership with technology

 Teachers may include technology without
  being an expert themselves
EVOLUTION

 “Educational system must continue to evolve
  and adapt to remain effective”
 Technology is ever changing and fast!
Therefore schools and teachers must be
  equally flexible.
 Like it or not, there will never a be a static
point where things are done the same way
  ever after.
TRADITIONAL ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY

 Product Technology – hardware/software
 Idea Technology – Usage of product
technology to solve a problem eg) simulation
 Traditional Role has focused only on product
  technology
CONTEMPORARY ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY

 Allows students to use technology to assist
with their ability to understand and apply
  their learning.
 Principle 1 – “Effective Learners actively
  process lesson content”
 Learning must be an active process.
 Myth – Product technologies increase
      interactivity
 Principle 2 “Presenting information from
    multiple perspectives increases the
    durability of instruction.

 Principle 3 “Effective instruction should build
    upon students’ knowledge and experiences
and be grounded in meaningful contexts.
DISCUSSION QUESTION
Going back to the 3rd slide.
 Classroom must become learner centered
 Students/Teachers must form a partnership with technology.

This idea has been around since 1992 (20 years). Why are we still having problems
implementing ICT in our classrooms/schools?

Eg)
 Staff not wanting to change

 Impossible to keep up with rapid development

 Inadequate PD for staff

 Filtering/usage policies
WHERE TO FROM NOW?

At the end of the article there are 7 discussion questions.
Discussion Questions
1. How did the high school you attended use technology in the classroom?
2. Describe the characteristics of teachers at each of the levels of technology adoption.
3. Compare and contrast "product" and "idea" technologies. How would you use
technology in the classroom?
4. Why has technology consistently failed to impact education?
5. Can technology improve the quality of education? What can be done to help teachers
to use technology effectively in the classroom?
6. Describe the teaching traits of a teacher whom you believe to be effective. Where
would you place that teacher on the continuum of technology adoption? Explain your
decision.
7. How should colleges of education and public school districts help teachers to use
technology effectively in their classrooms?

Have a think about any or all of these questions and leave a comment!.
