Author’s Introduction
No matter where you live, how much money you make, how many kids you have, or
how old you are, it’s possible that you struggle with your weight. People who are
extremely successful, people who used to be college athletes, and people who are
very motivated can all be overweight; it’s a condition that crosses racial, economic,
social, familial, and political boundaries, and it’s something that’s getting a lot worse.
According to some estimates, as many as 70% of people in the United States are
classified as overweight or obese. And why is this the case? Because gaining weight is
easy, and losing weight is hard. Or that’s what we tell ourselves. And, in fact, that’s
true, if you’ve been on the modern, Western diet your entire life, like almost everyone
else in the country. But many people have been finding out over the past few decades
that losing weight doesn’t have to be so hard. In fact, it can be easy, satisfying, and
sustainable, without constant calorie-counting, excessive exercise, or a huge amount
of self-denial. This is the secret of the low-carbohydrate diet.

What You’ll Get From This Book
Every diet has promises for you—they’ll tell you that’ll get a super model’s body, or
that you’ll drop three dress sizes, or that you’ll be the weight that you were in college,
and sometimes they deliver. You start the diet, the pounds melt away, and you start
heading toward your goals . . . but then you stagnate. You plateau in your weight loss,
and you get frustrated. You might start gaining some of that weight back soon after
losing it. You might start finding that the diet is much harder to maintain in the long-
term than you thought it would be. And, eventually, you quit the diet because it’s just
too much work for such a small payoff. Sound familiar?

that you’ll drop three dress sizes, or that you’ll be the weight that you were in college,
and sometimes they deliver. You start the diet, the pounds melt away, and you start
heading toward your goals . . . but then you stagnate. You plateau in your weight loss,
and you get frustrated. You might start gaining some of that weight back soon after
losing it. You might start finding that the diet is much harder to maintain in the long-
term than you thought it would be. And, eventually, you quit the diet because it’s just

3. The Belly Fat Shred Diet
Throughout the first part of this book, we’ve gone over what you can expect from
this diet, some facts about abdominal fat, the basics of the Atkins diet, and some
key concepts related to carbohydrates. You’re probably anxious to get started on
the diet, so we’ll now go over all of the steps you’ll need to get form wherever
you are right now to your goal weight. This chapter is divided into five sections,
each of which is important. In the next chapter, you’ll find two useful resources: a
quick-start guide that contains the main principles of the diet, and a list of foods
that are allowed or disallowed in certain phases of the diet. You can make a copy
of these and keep them in your kitchen, or distribute them to friends, or do
whatever you’d like with them—they’re there as a useful tool for you to use in
whatever way will help you reach your weight loss goals!

4. Resources
In this section, I’ve included two resources that I think you’ll find very useful in
your weight-loss endeavors. The first is a quick-start guide that sums up some of
the basics of weight loss as well as the first steps of the diet, and provides exercise
recommendations. Basically, it’s the short-form guide to weight loss with the
Atkins diet. The second resource is a list of foods that are allowed or prohibited in
each phase of the diet, as well as information on how you should be adjusting
your carbohydrate intake throughout the weight-loss process. I hope that you find
these helpful—feel free to photocopy them and put them in your kitchen or give
them to friends who are curious about using Atkins to get rid of abdominal fat!
