- 16. ETCS over Packet Switching
• Following very successful campaign in Sweden 2010…
• …major European project running 2011-2015 and co-financed
with around 6 M€ by European Union
• New Specifications - Euroradio, Quality of Service, Test
• Engineering Guidelines
• Laboratory and Field tests in France, UK and Denmark
• Tests so far yielding promising results…
…very next step train runs at 300 km/h in France in May 2013
…likely followed by field tests in Denmark in May/June 2013
…using NSN GPRS infrastructure along test stretch
• Planning in progress
• Extremely interesting since Banedanmark will be the first
Railways world wide to fully rely on ETCS running over GPRS

- 18. Main drivers for a Next Generation Railway Communication
System
Technology • Leveraging the 3GPP eco system
Following the 3GPP path to continuously benefit from most successful
Evolution communication system, guaranteeing interworking and global roaming
Broadband • Increasing use of data applications and new operational services
requires efficient networks: Surveillance, Passenger services,…
Applications
• LTE offers more than changing the radio IF
Operational • Simplified Network Structure, advanced configuration and supervision
technology (e.g. SON - Self Organizing Networks)
improvements
- Automation reduce human faults
- Self healing networks, speed-up maintenance

- 19. Next Generation (NG) “EIRENE” system (NSN view):
Challenges
• Seamless Migration of track-side and on-board – during a migration period over several years GSM-R and NG-R
will co-exist
• The most specific and technically demanding part of GSM-R is Group communications…
NSN activities
• Work is started and organized in a project NG-R which will result in a white paper covering aspects like
- System architecture , radio planning, redundancy, train speed
- Different alternatives for frequency allocation
- Alternatives for User Equipment
- Functionality, Support of ETCS as well as new data services
- Migration scenarios
• Active participation in Railway bodies and forums
• Active participation in 3GPP/ETSI work groups e.g. “Group Call System Enablers (GCSE)” to specify the Group
Call requirements in 4G, Long Term Evolution LTE during 2013
(NSN Public safety group is chair of this work items and in close cooperation with NSN Railway group)
