If you are currently
employed, of course you
must be thankful that at
least, you have a job. But
this doesn’t mean that
you should be satisfied
with it for the rest of
your life. Everyone has the right to jump ships and
change employers anytime they want to. And if you
are thinking of advancing your career, it will be
inevitable for you to consider changing jobs or
employers. The question is this: is it safe to look for
another job while you are still employed?
In most states, employers tend to have very strict
rules regarding the conduct of employees. As a
matter of fact, employers have the power and the
right to fire anyone from their staff for whatever
reason they may have, provided that it isn’t related to
discrimination. Looking for a new job while still
under their payroll is a ground for termination.
As a job seeker, you know how important networking
is in your job search. And so, it is recommended even
by experts from resume and career services that
those who wish to find another place of employment
to start building their network as soon as they can.
Here are the things you should not do as you build
your network even while you’re still employed.
Don’t Broadcast Your Plans
Job seekers from anywhere in the world find it really
useful and helpful to use the social media in their job
search efforts. But if you don’t want everyone,
especially your boss, to know that you are looking for
a different job, it is not a good idea at all to turn to
social networking sites for your networking.
Don’t Meet Potential Employees through Job Fairs
Job fairs are almost always well attended by both job
seekers and employers. This means that once you
participate in them, there is a huge possibility that
you’d see someone familiar with both you and your
current employer. This is a big risk on your part that
you would want to take.
Don’t Share Your Plans with Coworkers
It is not a good idea to let your job or career change
plans known to even your closest coworker. Even if
you feel you really need some advise, look for
another person to confide on, because if you do this
with a fellow worker, you will just be putting him or
her in a situation where they need to choose between
your friendship and their loyalty to the company.
It is never an easy task
to look for a job,
especially now that
employers are already
very particular about
the individuals that they
employ. It is for this reason that as a job seeker, you
should not hesitate to spend time in preparing the
documents you need, such as your resume. There are
many ways you can write your resume, but you may
never know which one is the most appropriate to use.
Thus, research is needed for you to have an idea of
what an effective resume looks like.

Hiring resume and career services is another way
you can make sure you are submitting a professional
looking resume. While this is an additional
investment for you, seeking help from professional
resume writer will boost your chance of landing a
great job. Here is what you should look for in a good
resume.
Qualities of an Effective Resume
Good Impression
As they say, first impressions always last. As soon as
a hiring manager gets hold of a resume, he takes a
quick look at it. When he finds something interesting
about a resume, he will surely continue to read it.
What this means is that it should be your goal to get
the attention of a prospective employer and make
him want to continue reading your resume.
Remember that it takes just 30 seconds for an
employer to decide whether a resume should be kept
in his files or be thrown in the trash bin.
Concise and Specific
A great resume is one that contains concise and
targeted sentences. For instance, if you want to
describe your duties in the past, you should give the
reader a clearer picture of what you used to do. So,
instead of stating that you “supervised sales
personnel”, you could state it this way: “supervised
15 members of the sales department and closed deals
instigated by sales people”.
Appropriate Format
The most preferred resume format by employers is
the chronological format. The reason is that such a
format puts more emphasis on the work history of
the job applicant. This is beneficial on the part of the
applicant also especially if he or she does not have
excessive employment gap.
Preferred Skills
Employers are always in search for various skills and
personality traits when choosing the best candidate
for the position. This can be explained by the fact that
every single position they are looking to fill has
varying requirements. But in general, and according
to career coaching experts, companies are in favor
of applicants who have excellent communication
skills, great work ethic, outstanding interpersonal
skills, adaptability, and organizational skills. These
are the traits that you need to include in your resume
to be considered for the job you are applying for.
If you are using a
resume that looks
just like anybody
else’s resume, then it
is definitely not the
best one you could
have. What many
people don’t realize is the fact that using those
resume templates online is one of the biggest
mistakes any job seekers could make. You have to
avoid this if you are serious about your job hunt. The
objective of this post is to let you know what words,
phrases, and ideas many recruiters really don’t want
to see in their applicants’ resume. These are the
things also that professional resume and career
services won’t let you have in your resume.
a. Salary is negotiable.
There is no sense in indicating in your resume that
your salary is negotiable because employers are
aware of this. Putting this in your CV simply shows
that you have nothing else to put in there, which is a
total turn-off for recruiters.
b. Reference to be provided upon request.

Every hiring manager expects to see a list of
reference in each of the resumes that they receive. On
the part of the job applicant, having a couple of
credible references show experience and
professionalism, which companies find very
impressive. Thus, you can only imagine how
ridiculous your resume would seem if it states that
you could only provide the reference if you are asked.
c. Previous job responsibilities.
Keep in mind that employers are not interested in
what you had to do in your previous jobs. What they
want to know is how successful or effective you were
and what your achievements are. So, instead of
enumerating your responsibilities, you may as well
just highlight your achievements in your other jobs
and in your career as a whole.
d. I am hardworking.
Employers expect their workers to all be dedicated to
their work and hardworking. What they want is for
the employees to show their work ethic rather than
brag about them. You can describe how diligent you
are as a worker during your interview. There is no
use in allotting space in your resume for that.
e. Objective.
One of the most common mistakes in writing a
resume is the use of the word Objective as the
headline of the resume. It is clear already that you are
trying to get the job, so it is useless to indicate it once
more in your resume. Instead, you should put Career
Summary in the beginning of your resume. This
summary should include a description of your
employment background, achievements, and
everything that you have to offer the company you
are applying to. An effective resume should
represent you as a professional and not a mere job
hunter.
