- The demand for transport is going to get several times greater globally as 3 rd world countries economies improve
- Anthropogenic – man made. CO2 is not the only greenhouse gas but is the one that is relevant to the transport sector
- Transport is 23% of total but this excludes international aviation and shipping
- Domestic aviation 0.9MtC, international aviation 9.3MtC
- HGVs and vans are important as cars
- Effects of improvements in engine and fuel technologies recently… this is New Cars not the current car fleet
- International Aviation … the elephant in the cupboard
- Even if we cut other transport emissions we will see a substantial growth in aviation which has a doubling effect on GHG because of Reactive Forcing effects of contrails producing extra water vapour in the atmosphere (water vapour is a greenhouse gas) and NOx impact on ozone in atmosphere
