MOOC’s Assignment
Due Date: 23 February 2014
• What does the term MOOC stand for
• What is MOOC with special reference to the historical background of where it started and
developed
• The types of MOOC
• The course categories in MOOC
• The duration of the courses in MOOC’S
• My field of interest in MOOC’S
• Reference list
Having knowledge on the term named MOOC/ MOOC’S based on:
Educational Outcomes of this assignment include
Definition of MOOC
• MOOC stands for a (CoToNet,2014)“MASSIVE OPEN ONLINE COURSE” from my
subjective view I would state that it is an online course open to any one in the world
from different diverse people be it students ,teachers ,scholars and so forth
• They further go on to say (CoToNet,2014) it is an “online course aimed at large-scale
participation and open access via the internet” by that they clearly saying that it is
free and can be easily accessed by anyone regardless of your profession. MOOC’S
Directory (2014) also support this statement made by CoToNet they agree to say it is
a “free non-degree” variety of online courses which can be enrolled by anyone
regardless of their “educational level” as I also already mentioned.
• According to CoToNet (2014) “they are similar to university but do not tend to offer
academic credit” hence we need to be critical when joining one of the online courses
so as to engage in new experiences that allow a person to grow and develop.
• Why that statement?
• According to MOOC news and reviews (2013) MOOC evolved
from three aspects namely:
When we look at the evolution of technology we can see that MOOC’S
evolved from distance learning:
Historical Background of MOOC
1.
Correspondence
study
3. Computer
mediated2. Multimedia
All these aspects lead to technology being used a
wed-tool to allow people to engage educationally
regardless of where they reside in the world
• The first MOOC was founded or launched in 2008
named “Connectivism and Connective
Knowledge/2008’ (CCK08) (MOOC news and reviews
(2013)
• It was created by educators named Stephen Downes
and George Siemens
• Which can conclude that the Idea behind the MOOC
acronym is to provide free academic knowledge online.
• It is massive in the sense that anyone can enroll
regardless of the number of people.
Historical Background of MOOC
• According to McAuley et al.,2010:40 “A MOOC is a
reflection of a society in which citizens are active
agents in the processes through which knowledge is
created and disseminated”.
active↓agents
• Which leads to the conclusion that MOOC’S allows
opportunities where people from all walks of life are
able to interact regardless of ones diversity.
In the modern advanced society of technology
Development of MOOC
• The interesting and important aspect of MOOCS is that MOOCs
“build on the engagement of learners who self-organize their
participation according to learning goals, prior knowledge and skills,
and common interests” (McAuley et al.,2010:40).
• With a subjective perspective on this given statement by McAuley is
that it allows students or learner to be active agents of their own
educational outcomes which they develop while they on their
course content. It furthermore allows learners to be independent
thinkers and not rely on anyone for that matter that includes their
course. In partnerships with corresponding universities and colleges
students are able to acquire new knowledge while doing a course
with MOOC which allows them to be ready for tertiary education.
In the modern advanced society of technology
Development of MOOC
According to Sloep’s article(2012)
there are
Two types of Massive Open
Online Courses
namely:
• 1. Connectivist approach :
Which emphasizes learning that focuses on the “learning process,
with network construction and navigation, where connections,
interactivity, diversity, openness and autonomy are emphasized
•Two types of MOOC’s
• 2. Instructivist – Behavioral/Cognitivist (blended with
constructivist) approach
With learning focusing on the learning outcomes and so
are basically content based, where learners are guided
by the main instructors, and are also assessed based on
either the machine based assessment tools or peer
assessment.
In this case the professional studies 3A students will be
assessed by the lecturers
•Two types of MOOC’s
The Pros and Cons
of
MASSIVE
OPEN ONLINE COURSES
(2014) Adapted from a
question
and answer education
article
• Inexpensive: No fees are charged to join, until institutions can find a way to charge for MOOCs,
they are free or nearly free.
• Accessibility: Anyone can access MOOC .
• Knowledge: If students take their MOOC course seriously, they are able to gain the knowledge
they seek. Online tests and discussions ensure the material is understandable and retained.
• Universality: Most MOOC courses bring together people from all over the world – which means
educational options previously unavailable to students are now accessible. It also unites
students together in forums to provide a global perspective.
PROS OF MOOC’S
• Lack of hands-on learning: Does not provide meaningful communication one would get in a
context of a classroom or lecture hall.
• Insufficient measurement of knowledge gained: Given the massive enrolment numbers,
MOOCs by makes it impossible to grade papers or exams, which is not an advantage to users
• High drop-out rates: Given the lack of human interaction, MOOCs suffer from high dropout
rates. In fact, according to Heller, when conducted entirely online, “dropout rates are typically
higher than 90%”
• In the end, the future of MOOCs will depend on both the teachers who teach them and the
students who demand them.
CONS OF MOOC’S
• According to CoToNet (2014) the course categories range from chemistry ,education ,
humanities , technology and so forth depending on the field of interest one finds himself in.
• And the course length also ranges depending on how long the duration you want it to be they
range from 1 week to a maximum of 52 weeks.
• The estimated effort refers to how the students wants to spend time on the activities, they
range from being self study methods or even 1 to 20 hours a week which you spend on the
given tasks.
Course categories, length and effort
My personal field of Interest in MOOC’S
The one course I would like to join on MOOC is that of
Language and Literature that deal with all aspects of
language such as writing ,speaking ,composition .
comprehension, translation and so forth. I would not mind
translating poems because of my subject area which is
Afrikaans with a well known Afrikaans poem that I studied
in grade 10 years back called die “gesteelde TV” by Peter
Snyders which I decided to snip and add it as well to my
interests as I am very good in literature

  • 7. • The interesting and important aspect of MOOCS is that MOOCs “build on the engagement of learners who self-organize their participation according to learning goals, prior knowledge and skills, and common interests” (McAuley et al.,2010:40). • With a subjective perspective on this given statement by McAuley is that it allows students or learner to be active agents of their own educational outcomes which they develop while they on their course content. It furthermore allows learners to be independent thinkers and not rely on anyone for that matter that includes their course. In partnerships with corresponding universities and colleges students are able to acquire new knowledge while doing a course with MOOC which allows them to be ready for tertiary education. • 15. My personal field of Interest in MOOC’S The one course I would like to join on MOOC is that of Language and Literature that deal with all aspects of language such as writing ,speaking ,composition . comprehension, translation and so forth. I would not mind translating poems because of my subject area which is Afrikaans with a well known Afrikaans poem that I studied in grade 10 years back called die “gesteelde TV” by Peter Snyders which I decided to snip and add it as well to my interests as I am very good in literature
