Working Title:
The Tortured
Audience:
My audience will be predominantly young males 18-25, this is because men stereotypically are
more interested in blood gore and violence and when researching movies of similar style and
genre I found that the much larger demographic tended to be males (e.g. Shaun of the dead 61%
Male 39% Female, Django unchained 67.2% Male 32.8% Female). The comedy used within the
film will also be quite dark and which again tends to be enjoyed more by males rather than females
which I again found out be researching comedians and films that would be considered to feature
heavy themes of dark humour (E.g. Monty Python Male 67% Female 33%, Bill Hicks 71.8%
Female 28.2%). Generally, my audience will fall into the social grades ABC1, this is because this
audience will have be more likely to have a disposable income compared to social grades C2DE
which generally do not have as much disposable income. The Psychographic results are based on
my personal knowledge of political stereotypes as well as gender and age stereotypes, which
leads me to believe that seen as though the majority of the audience who would go see this film
are young males that are generally leaning left politically the audience is very lightly to fall under
the following psychographics: Emulator; Balanced and very arguably; Socially Conscious Type A.
Again, these are not necessarily accurate nor should they be taken as gospel; however they
should be considered as they can have an impact and help create a product that is more targeted
and therefore more successful.
Rationale
Throughout the year I have worked on many different projects however I most enjoyed the Film
and print rotation as I found them the most challenging and I feel as though I learned the most.
During the film rotation was the first time I ever made a short film where I really needed to plan
everything I wanted to make and develop my ideas. It was the first time I felt like I started with a
rock and slowly chiselled away all the impurities, until I had something that was far superior than
what I had started of with, I really want to experience that feeling again but on a larger scale with
more freedom. Video and print are by far my favourite mediums and I wanted to try and push
myself in both, however as I am already very confident within Photoshop and don’t think I could
dramatically improve over the course of this project I really wanted to challenge myself and learn
new things within the world of video, this is why I decided to do a film trailer as I think I’ll learn a lot
of new skills as well as create a product that can push me both my creativity and my skills and
ability with both the camera (and equipment) as well as the software that I will need to use to
assemble it all. I really want to create something that looks and feels not only professional but real,
I want to create something where the viewer can say ‘That’s good!’ not ‘That’s good…..for a
student film’ as I wanted to push myself a little bit more I will also create some movie posters as
this would allow me to firstly, learn more about taking professional looking photos and assembling
them to create a posters and secondly; allow me to create a product that tied in with the film trailer,
this means that the products support each other and it will make each product feel more real and
professional. I feel that from all the subjects I have gone through and studied this past year I have
learned and acquired enough skills that I can build upon to create a product that will be far superior
to anything I have made before.
Project Concept
In preparation for this project I researched a few different products as well as colour schemes and
audiences, straight of the bat when we first had to brainstorm ideas I already had a relatively clear
idea of what I wanted to create, however the research really tied everything together and any loose
screws within my concept and initial ideas were tightened. The products I researched all had very
specific aspects that I liked for example the sound track in the trailer for ‘All the money in the world’
or the sequencing and eerie nature within the trailer for ‘Goodnight Mommy’ I will use that
information and those specific aspects from the mentioned products to influence my final product
so that all its technical aspects (e.g. tone and mood, editing, sound etc.) are as good as they
possibly can be and are coherent with the story that I want to tell.

The project that I am going to create is a horror/comedy film trailer, the concept of the project is
very linear, the rough idea is that we can see the story arch at four different points. The first point
is of course the beginning when we are introduced to the characters, the two characters we are
most introduced to are the protagonist and his girlfriend, I need to clearly establish that the
relationship between the protagonist and his girlfriend is a very strong, loving and healthy one, this
is so that the second story arch is more impactful. The second arch is where the girlfriend is
killed/dies, we need this information so that the audience understands the emotion behind why the
character breaks and becomes the twisted psychopath that he ends up being. The 3rd turning
point gives us context and an idea about what we will see within the film itself, it will give us a small
but substantial clue as to what the story line of the film will be. The 4th and final story arch, will be
footage of the protagonist creating his mask and costume and picking out torture weapons, this will
give visual reference to the character changing from a normal person to again the psychopath
killer, there will also be footage of the protagonist torturing some of his victims, so that the
audience has an insight into the gory and violent nature of the film.
The posters will tie in as the product behind my project is a movie campaign so the film poster
works quite well as a tie in; as well as adding professionalism.
Evaluation
I will evaluate my work against existing professional work as well as some of my own existing work
to look at the progress I have made and what I need to do to make my work look more
professional. I will also evaluate it on a weekly basis as well as on a daily basis by reflecting on the
work I did on that day/during that week, this will ensure I have a good idea of what I did each week
and it will give me a good reference point, as well as provide me with a constant idea of what might
need improving or how I need to manage my time so. This process will ensure that my final
product will be far better. I will reflect on peer feedback plus a final self-reflection so I can see what
I thought of the product and what other people thought of it. Finally, I will compare my final product
to my first intentions and my planning and see where it is similar and where it has differed and if
there is differences I will explore why I did it differently.
