Sarah is the BC HRMA student representative for Capilano University. She is also the co-director
of the Capilano University Human Resources Management Association.

How long have you been a BC HRMA member?
Since October 2007.

Tell me about your education/training background.
I am a student at Capilano University's School of Business. I will be graduating in December of
this year with a Bachelor of Business Administration and Advanced Diploma in Strategic Human
Resources Management. I wrote the National Knowledge Exam in October 2008 and will know
how well I did very soon!

Tell me about your experience/background in the field of Human Resources.
During my third year of studies at Capilano University, I developed a strong interest in Human
Resources. Through the encouragement of Kathryn Taft, a faculty member at the University, I
enrolled in the Advanced Diploma in Strategic Human Resources Management program. Along
with pursuing HR related coursework, I became involved in several extra-curricular activities
related to HR. In October 2007, I became a student member of BC HRMA. Next I became
immediately involved in volunteering at the 2007 conference, then proceeded to become a mentee
in the Professional Mentorship Program, and finally became a Student Representative for
Capilano University's Post Secondary Committee (Coastal Vancouver Region). In February of
2008, I became an active member of Capilano University's student led Capilano HRMA, and took
over a director's role in June 2008. My primary areas of interest and study have been training and
development, organizational development, labour relations and performance management.

What is your HR Philosophy?
I aspire to develop the skills and abilities needed to sit with the strategic leadership team of an
organization. I believe an HR professional must have financial intelligence to strategically
contribute to an organization's effective utilization of human resources. As well, I believe the HR
function must continue to evolve its practices and policies to create an organization that not only
focuses on meeting the bottom dollar, but also meets the social and emotional needs of its
workers. I feel the emerging generation of workers will place great importance on work-life
balance and a commitment to social responsibility. The HR function should meet the needs of
these workers and I am excited to help lead the revolution.

If you could have 5 more hours in a day, how would you spend them?
Along with my passion for HR, I have a passion for Alpine rock climbing in my own backyard of
the Coast Mountains, and also some of the biggest mountain ranges in the world. The wilderness
of British Columbia is a playground and there's nothing better than the feeling of being so small in
such wild and beautiful country. If I could have five more hours a day, I'd be spending them
climbing!
