One of the most sought-after tourist destinations in South Asia, India is a land
of diversity, which can be seen vividly in any part of the country. Its history
dates back to many thousand years, since the time of one of the oldest
civilisations in the world, the Harappan. The diverse cultures, their unique
traditions and notable festivals of India are a few other reasons that have
made it immensely popular among international travellers. The glory of this
Asian country does not end here. There are many world-famous holiday
destinations in India that lure people to pay a visit to this incredible nation at
least once in their lifetime. Continue reading to know about two such places to
not miss on a tour of the country.
Amritsar
Amritsar, a beautiful city in Punjab, is home to the most significant Sikh shrine
in the world, Sri Harmandir Sahib or the Golden Temple. It is a spectacular
structure completely made of white marble and overlaid with gold leaf. Those
on a tour of Amritsar can also visit Jallianwala Bagh, located at a walking
distance from the temple. The latter is infamous for being the site of British
brutality, where hundreds of unarmed Indians were shot dead on the order of
British officer, Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer.
If tourists are coming to the city during national holidays in India, then they
can also visit Wagah Border – the border crossing between India and Pakistan.
The Beating Retreat ceremony, performed here every day, is the attraction of
this place. Also called as lowering of the flags ceremony, it involves lowering
the flags by the defence personnel of both sides to conclude the day. The
ceremony starts, when the heavy gates of both sides are flung open, and
Indian and Pakistani soldiers approach each other with fierce looks and
mimicked threats. After shaking hands, the process of lowering the flags of
both the countries begins, which are then folded neatly.
Delhi
Delhi is another destination in the country that is not only thronged by
domestic travellers but also by tourists from different parts of the globe. The
city is home to many interesting attractions like Qutb Minar, Red Fort, India
Gate and Akshardham Temple.
If someone is visiting this city during Republic Day, they can watch the grand
parade at Rajpath. The ceremony begins from Rashtrapati Bhavan on Raisina
Hill to India Gate.
The event commences with the arrival of the President of India and the chief
guests. The regiments of all the three defence forces march past on the road
along with their musical bands. School children demonstrate cultural shows
and the floats in the parade demonstrate the uniqueness of the Indian states.
These are the two destinations, which travellers can visit for an insightful tour
