Les débuts
Les origines de la marque se retrouvent dans l’Allemagne nazie des années 1930 avec le projet de
construire la voiture populaire qu’allait devenir la Coccinelle (officiellement désignée "type1", appelée Käfer
en Allemagne).
Avant de désigner une société automobile, le mot Volkswagen désigne le modèle de véhicule qui allait faire
le succès de l’entreprise - dans un contexte de mono-industrie qui allait d’ailleurs lui causer des difficultés
dans les années 1970. Avant guerre, le désir d’Hitler est que chacun puisse s’offrir une voiture, car
l’Allemagne vient de se doter d’un large réseau d’autoroutes qui restent désertes. L’ingénieur
Ferdinand Porsche , voyant dans ce projet l’occasion de réaliser son plus vieux rêve : fabriquer un modèle
de voiture populaire, lui fit une proposition en ce sens, inspirée des modèles avant-gardistes Tatra de
Hans Ledwinka. Les prototypes de ce véhicule appelé provisoirement KdF-Wagen.

ESP monitors two parameters:
A. The path the driver wants to go.
Steering wheel angle and wheel speed
sensors provide this information
B. The vehicle’s direction of travel.
Yaw rate and lateral acceleration sensors
provide this information.
If comparison information ‘’A’’ and ‘’B’’ differ, ESP assumes
a critical situation can occur. A critical situation can result
in two types of behavior of a vehicle.

EDL is operational up to 25 mph (40 km/h).
ASR and ESP are operational at all speeds.

4Motion is a full time all-wheel-drive system
requiring no driver input. 4Motion uses a Haldex
coupling and Electronic Differential Locks (EDL) to
automatically direct engine power to the wheel or
wheels with the most traction.
4Motion operates full-time to maximize acceleration
and control in all driving conditions. There are no
special levers, buttons, or hub locks for the driver to
operate.
Available on:
CC with 2.6L VR6 engine and Tiguan

Airbags are supplemental restraints systems designed to
work with safety belts to protect the driver and passengers
from hitting hard surfaces automobile collision. They
deploy very rapidly from front and side interior panels.
Front and Side airbags are standard on every
Volkswagen Vehicle.
The system is designed to only deploy the airbag
facing the direction of the collision. The front airbags
only deploy in a frontal collision if there is sufficient
force and the angle of impact falls within the 60 O
span of the centerline of the vehicle.

hard surfaces during a collision

Volkswagen was the first manufacturer in its competitive
segment to offer and standardize front seat mounted side-
impact air bags upplemental restraints on every car in the line.

While the European market is mainly dominated by
Manual gearboxes, the preferred gearbox in the US and
Japan is the automatic one. However, Volkswagen took
the best of both worlds and created the Direct Shift
Gearbox (DSG).
The DSG meets the high standards of drivers of
Automatic and manual gearboxes such as:
-comfort
-driver control
-performance
-ease of use
-fuel efficiency For example: if 1st
gear is selected Clutch 1 is
engaged and it transfers power through Output Shaft 1
to the Drive Gear and then to the differential. While
this is happening Clutch 2 is disengaged, but 2nd
gear
is ready for activation. Operation is similar for the
remaining gears

The concept of the dual-clutch gearbox has been around in the field of motor sports years, but
Volkswagen is the first manufacturer in the world to perfect and use this concept for production vehicles.

DYK…If only 15% of cars and trucks in North
America were diesel-powered, more than 17
billion gallons of fuel would be saved over the
vehicle’s useful lives.
The fundamental difference between a gasoline engine
and a diesel engine is that a gasoline engine uses a
spark from a spark plug to ignite the fuel mixture in each
cylinder, while a diesel engine relies on the compression
of the fuel mixture in the combustion chamber to start
ignition.
Volkswagen’s Clean Diesel TDI engines produce
extremely low emissions – about 25% less than
gasoline engines – thanks to:
* Oxidation Catalyst
* Particulate Filter
* Nox Storage Catalyst (Jetta, Golf & Beetle)
* DeNOx Catalyst (Touareg only)
* AdBlue (Touareg and Passat only)

We are usually more concerned with how
quickly we can get up to speed or pass, than
the ultimate maximum speed of the vehicle, so
torque is probably more important to you.
Torque is like the force you use to loosen a
bolt
Against its resistance or, in an automobile, the
Force used to get the driven wheels turning. If
The wheels can be made to turn quickly,
Overcoming such factors as the weight of the
Vehicle and friction, it can accelerate quickly.
It is that simple.

FSI is a terrific example of that commitment.
The practical advantages of an FSI equipped
vehicle are numerous
The precise timing and location of the fuel
Delivery means that throttle response will be
much more lively. The fuel is delivered exactly
WHEN it is needed, exactly WHERE it is needed.
No more…no less than the exact amount.
FSI stands for Fuel Straight injection. This is a
technology that Volkswagen has used since 2006 in
our passenger vehicle engines, starting with the 2.0T
Inline 4 cylinder. Other Volkswagen engines to
feature FSI technology are the 3.2L VR6 found in the
CC and Touareg, as well as the 4.2L V8 that was
available in the Touareg.
FSI Engines are available on the following models:
GTI, GLI, Jetta, CC, Eos, Tiguan and Touareg.

The Immobilizer is a passive theft-deterrent
device that blocks the ignition system of the
vehicle if an unauthorized key is used during
starting. Even replacement of the ignition
lock or engine control module will not allow
the car to start without special Volkswagen
tools and programming information
Immobilizer is standard on all Volkswagen
Models.
The VW Immobilizer function is based on a
challenge/response model. A code is calculated from a
transmitted random number by a cryptological algorithm.
If the Immobilizer Evaluation Unit and key arrive at the
same result, the engine is allowed to run.
Benefits:
•Full-time vehicle protection against theft
• Requires no special driver action
• Works even if the vehicle is unlocked
• If the other keys are programmed, a lost old key cannot be
used to start the car
• Vehicles with Immobilizer may quality for insurance premium
reduction

‘’In conjunction with the ABS, ASR and EDL
systems, as well as additional sensors, ESP
helps the driver maintain their intended
course by generating corrective forces. ESP
is most effective when the driver is taking
evasive action during sudden maneuvers,
like when avoiding an accident.’’
STANDARD on ALL Volkswagen models
ESP is not an entirely independent system. Instead it
relies on the ABS and its own unique components.
ESP has an array of inputs including: Steering Angle,
Longitudinal, and Traverse Acceleration Rotational
Rate sensors. The system actively controls the
vehicle’s brakes and engine to prevent loss of driver
control when the vehicle is in danger of skidding.

The safety cell can be defined as the central section
of the vehicle body that forms the passenger
compartment. Volkswagen safety cells are computer
techniques of
finite analysis.
Safety cells are designed to help reduce the risk of
injury in the event of a frontal , rear or side impact
collision.
All Volkswagen vehicles incorporate Safety Cell and
Crush Zone features to protect drivers and
occupants.
The rigidity of the safety cell is due to many

- Special welding and bonding techniques

- Reinforced ‘A, ‘B, ‘ and ‘C’ pillars.
- Additional rigidity is attained with an assembling
- Technique which bonds the windshield and

The safety cell of the vehicle is actually protected by
the front and rear crush zones of the body.
Crush zones consist of front and rear body components
and sheet metal varying in thicknesses that are
designed to progressively absorb the kinetic energy of
the impact during a collision.
The design of the crush zone is based on a
technique of carefully designed and assembled
components that collapse in a predictable manner.

Safety Cell

Today, more than ever, reducing vehicle
weight while maintaining structural integrity is a
major consideration in automotive design. For
this reason, many Volkswagen body panels are
made from thin, light-weight, high-strength
steel.
Body panels made from conventional sheet steel
are heavy. With the newer generation models,
Volkswagen engineers now specify thinner, lighter
sheet metal for some body panels. These body
panels are made from specially alloyed, high-
strength steel which can be found on every
Volkswagen model This steel is thinner than the
steel normally used for body panels and therefore
saves considerable weight.
Available on all Volkswagen models.

• Helps provide excellent crash test results
• Saves weight for improved fuel economy
• Provides better ride comfort
• Minimizes noise levels
• Increases leak proofing
Did you know…
Sheet metal thickness on automobiles ranges
from 0.6 mm to 3.0 mm, with most pieces
being between 0.75 mm and 1.0 mm thick.

Turbochargers or ‘’turbos’’ are compressors run by the
exhaust gas pressure of an engine. They compress and force
incoming air into the combustion chambers or cylinders
thereby improving the ‘’breathing’’ of an engine. This
improved breathing results in better efficiency, more power
and improved emissions.
The use of turbo-charging has been a Volkswagen
trademark for years. The current 2.0T motor is available
on several popular Volkswagen models, and provides
numerous benefits for the Driver. Like all turbocharged
motors, the 2.0T delivers the power and performance of
larger engine, while weighing much less, and taking up
less space in the engine compartment. In addition to
turbo charging, the 2.0T features Furl Straight Injection
(FSI)
which further maximizes engine efficiency.
