MEDIA RELEASE
CEO Jessica May wins National Telstra Business Women’s Award
Enabled Employment CEO Jessica May last night won the National Telstra Business Women’s Startup
Award in a first for the business and the national capital.
Enabled Employment (www.enabledemployment.com and www.soldieron.enabledemployment.com) is
an online marketplace specifically designed for people with disabilities, and Australian Defence Force
veterans, and is a privately owned company funded by venture capital.
“This was a very unexpected win,” said Chief Executive Officer Jessica May.
“I believe it is the first time a Canberra startup has won this award, which is a credit not only to our
company, but to the innovation ecosystem in our city,” she said.
It is the first time in the 21 year history of the National Telstra Business Women’s Awards that any
Canberra based business has won a category.
Enabled Employment has received the support and encouragement of the GRIFFIN Accelerator,
Canberra Innovation Network and Canberra Lighthouse Innovations, and is just over a year into the
startup journey.
“We don’t believe employers should be paid to offer a job to people with a disability,” said Ms May,
“ADF veterans and people with a disability are just as skilled and qualified as anybody else.”
Ms May was met with a round of applause when she urged every employer in the room to consider
contacting Enabled Employment for their recruitment needs at the Awards Gala in Melbourne last night.
Ms May’s company is not a Disability Employment Service provider, and receives no government
funding. It encourages employers to use the untapped talent of those people currently living with post
service physical or psychological injuries, or those with a disability who are unable to find work due to
access or equity issues, or a lack of flexible working options.
Enabled Employment links highly skilled people, whether Australian Defence Force veterans or people
with disabilities, with inclusive employers who need specialist staff, using flexible conditions including
working from home and a results oriented work environment.
The lack of an employment service which could connect people with disabilities and ADF veterans with
employers drove the formation of the company.
Since establishment, Enabled Employment has achieved a placement success rate twice that of other
private sector recruitment companies.
