The document discusses the use of open badges on the social media platform Makewaves in schools. It provides statistics showing that over 33,000 badges have been awarded since 2013 through Makewaves, which has over 70,000 students and 9,000 teachers from 4,000 schools using the platform. The document describes two examples of how schools have used Makewaves badges to motivate students: at Roscoe Primary pupils help each other earn badges, and at another school interest in a music badge drove skills development and peer feedback. It also notes potential future directions such as badge missions, improved management tools, engaging parents, and teacher-led badges.

9. When Ofsted inspectors visited Roscoe in June 2013,
they acknowledged that our children have the benefit
of two schools. We have the real world of books and
the virtual world of Makewaves. Both are equally
important to us and both contain valuable evidence of
what goes on in our school.
In the 2013 SATs, 100% of our pupils achieved level 4
in both Reading and Maths. This is a long way from
the dark days of special measures and we believe that
a big part of this success is that our children are
motivated and engaged to learn because of the
exciting opportunities available to them.

- National badges & teacher
badges
Hollie and Demi at Roscoe help other children earn their Makewaves national badges – some are automatic, some are national partner badges, others are Makewaves competitions.
Roscoe have started to created their own badges which they keep private to them as a school (eg. top 3). They also have access to the members library of badges which any teacher can create and post to for others to use (bottom 3).

We are just getting into badges on Makewaves at Roscoe. Our children have been hugely motivated by the Makewaves badges and are really keen to earn the new, Roscoe badges we are creating. We have more boys writing to achieve their blog badge and children trying harder.Yr 5 & 6antarctic expert and topic badges, all school attendance, punctuality and attitude.
