 Failure of Peace Negotiations
 The execution of 23 Pakistani Frontier Corps
soldiers by the Taliban on 17 February 2014
 On 17 April 2014 the TTP formally ended the
ceasefire
 Jinnah Terminal Attack (June 08 2014)
 10 militants from the TTP and IMU attacked Karachi
Airport killing 28 people and wounding at least 18
 The intensified aerial strikes were launched right
after this attack on militant hideouts in the tribal
areas
PREPARATIONS
 The Pakistani military had prepared for the operation long
before
 The insurgent groups include Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan
(TTP), Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, Jundallah, al-Qaeda, the East
Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM), the Islamic Movement
of Uzbekistan (IMU) and the Haqqani network
 The operation involved the Air Force, Navy artillery, tanks
and around 30,000 soldiers on ground
 The combat troops encircled militant bases in the towns of
Mirali and Miranshah
 Drone strikes, which were halted for six months at the
request of the Pakistani government, resumed for the
operation and on June 11 2014 two drone strikes were
launched in Miran Shah
REACTION
 Domestic
 The decision by the Pakistani military to launch a
comprehensive operation was widely supported
 Journalists, opinion-makers, politicians and other
social-media users commended the operation
 The political establishment was initially divided and
Jamat e Islami continued to insist on the continuance
of dialogues
 But Pak Army was not seeking any opinion on this
decision from any political party. Their decision was

 On 22 June 2014, more than 100 Islamic scholars
issued a joint fatwa in support of the operation
REACTION
 International
 Afghanistan assured that it would provide every possible
assistance to defeat the militants in the operation
 UAE government also supported Pakistan in this war
against the extremists
 The United States had pressured Pakistan for a military
operation in North Waziristan for years
 US Congress linked military assistance to Pakistan for
the next fiscal year with military operations in North
Waziristan in June 2014
 Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that terrorism was
a problem common to China and Pakistan
ACHIEVEMENTS
 As per ISPR briefing:
 2763 terrorists killed
 837 hide outs destroyed
 253 tons explosive recovered
 218 hard core terrorists were shot down in cities
 347 officers & soldiers embraced Shahadat
 Law and Order situation has been remarkably
controlled
 Pakistan’s image has also been improved
Globally as a Peace Seeking Nation

aside & support Pakistan Army at all
levels.
