Bowling Green Park is the oldest park in New York City. As the Encyclopedia of New York City note "the local government laid out a bowling green in 1733 and offered it for rent to three local residents for one peppercorn a year". It had previously been used as a parade ground and cattle market.
5. Popular Lunch Spot
Previously there was a public street
along the south edge of the park,
also called "Bowling Green", but
since this area was needed for a
modern entrance to the subway
station, the road was eliminated and
paved over with cobblestones.
The recent beautification efforts
through its birchlike London Plane
trees, simple fountain, wooden
benches, and wi-fi access make it a
popular lunch spot.
The Bowling Green Park is among a
mixed area of residential and work
places Lots of places to eat and drink
subway entrance and the Wall
Street.
