What You Need to Know About Onboarding
Onboarding is more than
filling out forms.
Forms are important and necessary,
but onboarding a new employee can
and should be much more. Here
are a few things you should know
about onboarding that can help new
hires be productive sooner, be more
engaged, and stay longer.
What is Onboarding?
Onboarding is the way a new hire
goes from offer letter to
productive employee.
It is the process of transforming a
new hire into a fully functioning,
integrated member of the team.
A strong onboarding program
connects new hires to the
organization, their team,
company culture, and success.
The days of walking into a new job
and spending the first day (or more)
filling out forms are numbered.
As the onboarding process evolves
and becomes automated, this
aspect of onboarding is occurring
before the employee’s first day.
Automating the process helps both HR
and the new hire . . .
Onboarding should start before Day 1.
Day 1 Readiness = Day 1 Productivity
Completing forms online saves resources and helps to ensure tasks are completed
on time-- giving a new hire the tools they need to succeed and be productive on the
first day. Whether it is assigning the new employee a computer or providing
directions and instructions, engagement before start day can make the transition into
an organization much smoother and reduce new hire anxiety.
Eighty-three percent of best-in-class
organizations start onboarding prior
to Day 1 by welcoming new hires
warmly and tackling administrative
matters in advance.
Throughout the recruiting
process, an organization builds
an employer brand. But once
the offer is extended, the new
hire may not have contact with
their new employer for months!
Onboarding can be a great
way to keep in contact and
help the new hire learn more
about the company mission,
vision, values and culture.
Onboarding is an engagement opportunity.
Replacing an entry-level employee
is typically 30-50 percent of the
person’s annual salary. The number
is even more severe for mid and
senior-level executives.
A good onboarding process helps
by starting employees off on a
positive note, showing new hires
and existing employees that they
are valued members of the
organization. This helps to reduce
employee turnover.
Onboarding doesn’t end on the first day. . .
Employee turnover is costly.
Onboarding is the perfect opportunity to
make a positive, lasting impression on a
new hire. It really is the honeymoon
phase for new employees. They’ve just
agreed to come and work for a new
company, and they are prepared to be
wowed. But the employer must deliver.
With strong onboarding, a new
employee fully understands
their role and how it fits into the
organization. New employees
will know what is expected,
how to deliver, and what the
evaluation process will be.
This information helps new
hires and their managers
identify areas where more
training might be needed and
highlight potential opportunities
for learning, development, and
growth.
