This lecture is presented by our volunteer Javeria Khan, she is from Karachi, Pakistan, and she is covering "unwinding the potentials of stem cells"
for video: https://youtu.be/GDC3RKwIACY
4. What are stem cells?
An undifferentiated cell.
Divide to produce some offspring cells and some
cells that are destined to differentiate.
Cell with the ability to divide indefinitely in culture
and with the potential to give rise to mature
specialized cell types.
Can be obtained from bone marrow, adipose tissue,
blood or embryonic tissue.
15. Helps to know about switching a particular gene on or off that can cause it to
differentiate.
Able to discover what causes a wide range of illnesses.
Able to know what causes the cells to divide in the wrong way.
Helps in development of new drugs.
19. Damaged cells can be repaired by stem cells.
These cells possess powerful healing abilities.
Stem cell research is ongoing, and it is thought that stem
cell treatments may also be able to treat diseases
including paralysis and Alzheimer's.
