Mobiserv - An Integrated Intelligent Home Environment for the Provision of Health, Nutrition and Well-Being Services to Older Adults
The Mobiserv concept is based on the following technologies:
- Social companion robot – an intelligent and autonomous robot, containing processing power, data storage capability, various sensors, machine learning/experience gathering/adaptation, a touch screen, speech synthesis, and speech recognition.
- Wearable smart clothes – implementing various functionalities such as monitoring of vital parameters and falls.
- Smart home environment – including smart sensors, optical recognition units, and home automation actuators.
Objective of the project is to develop and use up-to-date technology in a coordinated, intelligent and easy-to-use way to support independent living of older persons as long as possible in their home or various degrees of institutionalization. The implementation will be based on the user acceptance of the technology and understanding of user interaction that truly addresses user needs.

4. The Project Objectives
Social Objectives
• OS1 Develop a Personal Robotic System to support daily living of seniors in
everyday activities, with an emphasis on personal health care,
independence, and quality of life.
• OS2 Support seniors in maintaining their social activities.
• OS3 Embrace a paradigm shift in health responders, redefining the way of
treating and managing health-related emergency calls and the way first
responders, carers, family, health care service providers are coordinated,
giving support to integrated care.

5. The Project Objectives
Research Objectives
• OR1 Research, develop and implement self-learning techniques for optical
recognition, pattern recognition and autonomous navigation.
• OR2 Research effective self-learning methods for predicting and detecting
health-related events from multiple sensors, given the fact that single
sensor based solutions are not robust and reliable.
• OR3 Evaluate the Personal Intelligent Robotic System in terms of comfort,
usability and safety.
• OR4 Investigate the most effective and efficient communication modes
between the robot and human user in various scenarios, and the impact of
cultural, gender, age and cognitive differences on this.
• OR5 Evaluate different types of robot embodiments in relation to user
acceptability, and the relationship between criteria for acceptance and
cultures, societal demographics.
5
6. The Project Objectives
Technological Objectives
• OT1 Produce an efficient design of the Personal Robotic Platform.
• OT2 Develop health status monitoring wearable fabrics.
• OT3 Develop a tele-alarm and health reporting system.
• OT4 Develop a nutrition support system.
• OT5 Integrate these components into the Personal Robot.
• OT6 Apply innovative techniques for monitoring nutrition habits and vital
signs of seniors
• OT7 Develop a unified interface to different wireless technologies, enabling
seamless connectivity.
• OT8 Develop methods for securing sensitive and private communicated
information.

• Companionship: well-being services for social and cognitive
stimulation, keeping people active, based context such as
inactivity or emotions
• Nutrition Coach: preventing dehydration and malnutrition
• Health Coach: encourage physical activities and exercises, tele-
medicine, and vital signs monitoring (with smart clothes)
• Safety Coach: fall detection and responder & controlling your
home
• Video communication to friends, family, carers, and a call

12. Main Achievements in 2012
• Preparing, planning and running extensive evaluations with
end-users, carers and other stakeholders in UK and NL.
– Analysis and reporting of evaluation study results.
• Development of new integrated scenarios, and improving the
system’s intelligence.
– Development of new user model, context model, and rules set.
• Design of the MOBISERV secondary user interface for
formal/informal carers.
12
13. Main Achievements in 2012
• Refined technical specifications of MOBISERV system.
• Development of final context-aware and nutrition support
prototype.
• Redesign of the smart clothes, including the smart garments
for night and day, and the data logger.
• Many audiences reached by scientific and non-scientific
dissemination activities.
13
14. Our Main Findings
Most valued by end-users and carers:
• Companionship
• Stimulating, motivating & supporting
• Embodiment & natural interaction
Opinions & reactions:
• It elicits human reactions and relations
• Provides security & peace of mind
• Empowers people, and helps people to help each other
• Will be part of the care eco-system, close to the informal
carer
14
15. Some Quotes
“It should be used for guarding, signaling,
stimulating, exercising, keeping me awake, etc.”
“The robot calling the emergency service –
that is most important.”
“It should say something nice every now and then, a little more
playful, and with more variation. A nice expression, something
original, something you do not hear every day.”
15
17. The Planning for 2013
• Finalization of the second MOBISERV system prototype.
• Running extensive user evaluation sessions in the UK and in NL
over longer periods of time, including primary and secondary
users
• Finalization of the various MOBISERV exploitation plans.
• Organization of national / international public showcase
events / workshops.
