7 Tips to Rock SMC Victoria
If you have an interest in social media then
you’ll want to be at Social Media Camp in
Victoria on Sunday October 3rd. We have been
working hard to bring you some of the best
social media thinkers and doers from across
North America. The day is going to be back-to-
back awesomeness with speakers like Scott
Stratten, Julien Smith and 25 other social
media professionals.
Attending SMCV10 is a great way to stay
abreast of industry trends, network with peers
and get face-to-face with people you’ve been
tweeting with.
Here are 7 tips to help ensure you get the most of our your experience at Social
Media Camp.
2. Identify your goals
Why are you coming to SMCV10? What do you want to achieve? Think about
and set some goals so when going through the rest of the steps you have
something to guide your decision-making. You can also use them after the
event to look back and see if you achieved what you set out to and if your
investment was worthwhile.
Understand your strengths and weaknesses
If you’re been rockin Twitter since 2009, you probably won’t get anything out of
a basic level Twitter presentation? Try hitting some sessions that cover topics
you’re not as familiar with or could use some strengthening
Publish your own stuff
Take the opportunity to grab one of the speakers between sessions for a quick
video interview or a pic and a blog post. Collaborate with colleagues on
something related to their session. This may be your only opportunity to sit
down with folks like Ricardo Bueno or Justyn Howard to explore opportunities
to work together.
Agenda Planning
Review the schedule ahead of time and print it out. Check out the speakers
and the session description. Use your printout to make notes of the sessions
you’d like to hit. Having an agenda will keep you on track. NOTE: you will also
receive an official SMC Program when you check-in that includes the final
schedule and speaker bio’s.
Prep some questions
You’ll get out of the event what you put into it. Take a few minutes to think
about what you’d really like to learn and prepare some questions around that.
I know I’ll be listening intently to Megan Berry talk about how they determine
KLOUT scores and look forward to asking her for examples of how companies
and levering KLOUT and why it matters.
Who do you want to meet
The camp is not just about great speakers. Often the most value you get out of
conferences are the people you meet. To do this you need to make the
effort. Not sure who’s attending? Check for those using the #SMCV10 hashtag
on Twitter, Facebook fans and list of speakers. If you’re coming alone and
3. don’t know anyone leverage Twitter or Facebook to do some pre-event
networking. If you’re coming with friends or co-workers make an effort to
break away and meet new people. Sometimes it’s easy to hang with the gang
but you can do that anytime. Prep a short list of people you really want to
meet ahead of time.
Follow-up
Once you get back from the event make sure you follow-up on the contacts you
made. Find them and Linkedin and “connect”. Shoot them an email. Upload
your photos to Flickr and videos to YouTube (be sure to tag them). And be
sure to write a blog post about the experience or comment on the SMC blog.
We hope you have a fantastic experience at Victoria’s first Social Media
Camp. Be sure to stop and say hello to me (Chris Burdge) or Paul and give us
your feedback.
We want everyone to walk away from this event saying WOW – that was
amazing. I learned so much and made some great contacts, I can’t wait for next
year!
