» VM scalability has come a long
  way since ESX 1.0
» Any workload can be virtualized now

                             8
Future Product Announcements

» VMware has become more open
about future product releases and features
» New VMware Horizon Mobile Suite for End
  User Computing previewed at VMworld
» New storage features for next vSphere release
  also previewed at VMworld
» Other tech previews were demonstrated at VMworld
» New features often get added early as experimental so
customers can preview them before officially supported

                              9
Focus on VDI & Mobile Computing

» VMware has long been the king at server virtualization
» VMware has been the underdog in client virtualization
» Server virtualization is done, client is next
» Client virtualization is much more difficult though
» VMware’s focus is on the person and not the device
» User experience should be the same
regardless of the device they use
» Apps and data should follow the user
  around from device to device
» Big focus on Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
or how VMware phrases it Spend Your Own Money (SYOM)

                            10
Focus on VDI & Mobile Computing

» VMware’s Mobile Virtualization Platform (MVP) vision
  appears to be dead
» New focus on native apps running on phones & tablets and
VDI clients, security is a big concern
» New VDI vision is called Horizon Suite which combines:
 Project Octopus, Project AppBlast, ThinApp, Horizon Application
     Manager and Horizon Mobile
» Beta for Horizon Suite is Q4 2012
» VMware demoed seamless desktop OS upgrade
» VMware also showed off iOS Workspace feature which is a
collection of apps, services and security policies

                                    11
Storage Futures

» VMware showed off a technology preview of their future
  storage architecture for vSphere
» There are 3 main components to it:
    Virtual Volumes
    Virtual SAN
    Virtual Flash
» Major change and
  a radically different
  architecture
  compared to what
  it is today

                             12
Storage Futures – Virtual Volumes

» Virtual Volumes (vVols) - new architecture for shared storage
» No LUN or mount points assigned to datastores anymore
» VMDK objects will be managed natively on storage array
» Protocol endpoint is a single I/O channel between host and
    storage array
» Storage containers are logical entities that describe physical
    allocation of space
» Uses vendor providers which are array plugins to
communicate policies and access to storage containers
» Uses VASA as a transport mechanism
» Will require new Storage APIs

                                13
Storage Futures – Virtual Flash & SAN

» Virtual Flash (vFlash) is a host-based SSD tier presented as a
  service to speed-up storage I/O
» Will be presented as a new type of resource pool
» Two deployment models
 Transparent caching in data path controlled by hypervisor
 Per VM caching that is controlled by VMs
» Virtual SAN (vSAN) turns DAS into SAN across multiple hosts
» Similar to current vSphere VSA model but will be built
natively into the hypervisor instead of a appliance
» Targeted at specific use-cases such as VDI, big data or
  distributed computing environments

                                    14
SolarWinds Storage Manager

» SolarWinds Storage Manager helps you keep a sharp eye on
the performance and capacity of your end-to-end physical
and virtual storage infrastructure—from VM to spindle
 Monitors storage performance & isolates hotspots in your multi-
     vendor SAN fabric
 Maps virtual machines to physical storage
 Automates storage capacity planning & reporting
 Simplifies analysis of storage usage & reclamation of storage space
 Easy to download, deploy, & use – start monitoring your storage
infrastructure in less than an hour
» Give your storage the attention that it demands

                                    15
SolarWinds Storage Manager

                     16
VMworld continues to grow

» First VMworld held in San Diego in 2004 with 1,400
  attendees
» VMworld 2012 held in San Francisco with 21,000 attendees
» Growth is a testament to
  the increased popularity
  of virtualization and
  VMware’s dominance
» May peak soon as Hyper-V
  becomes more widely
  adopted

                             17
VMworld 2012 Overview

» Theme was Right Here, Right Now – what does it mean?
 “This is the time to enter the new cloud era. We are ready. The
technology is here. And partners are in place.”
» Very heavy focus on VMware’s cloud vision
» More focus on cloud products, less focus on core products
» Transition from Paul Maritz to Pat Gelsinger was made
» No major product releases this time around
» Focus was on what’s cooking and coming in the future
» Cloud & Software Defined Data Center is the vision
» Announcements included 5.1 product releases, licensing
    changes and mobile computing previews

                                      18
vRAM Licensing Change

» Controversial Virtual RAM (vRAM)
  licensing model that VMware introduced
  in vSphere 5.0 is gone
» In addition to CPU socket based licensing,
VMware wanted to implement a tax for
  vRAM usage by VMs
» Big uproar from customers over this
» vSphere licensing is only CPU socket based again
» Why? VMware probably felt the heat from Microsoft with
new Windows Server 2012/Hyper-V 3.0 release
» Microsoft continues to beat VMware over the head on cost

                             19
Cloud Suite Licensing Changes

» vSphere licensed only by CPU socket
» Per VM licensing of companion products is gone
» vSphere now sold in
  vCloud Suite bundles
» Current Enterprise +
  licenses can upgrade
  to vCloud Standard
  for free
» Still can purchase
  vSphere and other
  products separately

                             20
Software Defined Data Center

» VMware defines a Software Defined Data Center as:
 A software-defined datacenter is where all infrastructure is virtualized
and delivered as a service, and the control of this datacenter is entirely
     automated by software.

                                      21
Software Defined Data Center

» Compute, storage, networking, security, and availability
services are pooled, aggregated, and delivered as
software, and managed by intelligent, policy-driven software.
» Today compute and memory resources are fully virtualized
but network and storage resources are largely physical
» vSwitches are dumb switches and most of the intelligence is
  in the physical switch
» Same with storage, there are some storage features in
vSphere but physical SANs have more intelligence & features
» VMware wants to bring that intelligence and management
fully into vSphere and dumb down the hardware

                               22
Software Defined Data Center

» How will they fulfill the SDDC vision?
» Network
 Cisco Nexus 1000v delivers more network intelligence to virtual
     layer, but….it’s not VMware’s technology
 Acquisition of software defined networking startup Nicira will provide
this so they can build it into their core product along with vShield
» Storage
 Building more storage intelligence and features into vSphere to turn
     physical storage into JBODs.
 Already mimicking storage array features with Storage DRS, Storage
     vMotion and Thin Provisioning
 New architecture with Virtual Volumes, Virtual SAN and Virtual Flash
     fill provide this

                                    23
Management Needs Continue to Grow in 2012

» Virtual environments becoming increasingly
  complex
» Makes management much more difficult,
  this is magnified by scale
» VMware really pushing vCenter
Operations Manager to complement vCenter Server
» vCOPs is now bundled into the cloud suites
» vCOPS is aimed at the high-end large scale virtual
  environments
» VMware is trying to add to vSphere what 3rd party products
  have been providing for years

                              24
SolarWinds Virtualization Manager

» Much more affordable alternative to vCOPs
» SolarWinds Virtualization Manager provides:
    Real-time dashboards simplify forecasting, detection, &
     troubleshooting of capacity bottlenecks
 Identifies VM sprawl, helps you reclaim & optimize space, & reduces
     licensing costs
 Tracks VM & host configurations over time & identifies drift from your
     "gold standard“
 All the functionality & more of other leading virtualization
management tools – at a fraction of the cost
» Best of VMworld winner in Virtualization Management
  category for 2011

                                    25
SolarWinds Virtualization Manager

                      26
Wrap-up & Summary

» 2012 was a fairly quiet year for VMware, expect next year to
  be much more exciting
» The future is mostly cloudy, get ready for it
» VMware showed off a lot of future direction and technology
» Will take some time to develop and get to the Software
Defined Data Center vision, expect more in 2013
» Big things coming for VDI once VMware finally delivers
» The future of storage looks radically different
» Licensing changes again, read up on it so you understand it
» Management is where it’s at, don’t forget it
» Be sure and check out the great products from SolarWinds

VMware Event Timeline 2012 » 2012 overall was a fairly quiet year for VMware  Jan. – VMware Solution Exchange opens it doors  May – VMware View 5.1 released  July – VMware acquires DynamicOps and Nicira  July – VMware announces Paul Maritz replaced by Pat Gelsinger from EMC  Aug. – VMworld 2012 in San Francisco – 21,000 attendees  Aug. – VMware announce new licensing changes  Sept. – vSphere 5.1/SRM/vCloud Suite 5.1 released  Oct. – VMworld 2012 EMEA in Barcelona – 7,000 attendees  Nov. – vCenter Operations 5.6 released 5
  • 6. 2012 VMware product releases » VMware moves to a yearly release model for vSphere with .0 & .1 releases » vSphere 5.1 released – incremental upgrade (Sept) » View 5.1 released (May) – note vSphere 5.1 does not support View 5.1, ESXi patch or vSphere 5.1.0a required » vCloud Director 5.1 released – upgrade from 1.5 (Sept) » vShield rolled into vCloud Director (App & Edge) and into vSphere (Endpoint) (Sept) » vSphere Data Protection replaces vSphere Data Recovery (Sept) » Site Recovery Manager (SRM) 5.1 released (Sept) » vCenter Operations Manager 5.6 released (Nov) 6
  • 7. What’s New in vSphere 5.1 » Incremental upgrade to vCenter and ESXi » New SE Sparse virtual disk (VDI) » No downtime VMware Tools upgrade » vShield Endpoint now packaged with vSphere » Now able to vMotion without shared storage » New vDS network features – LACP, SR-IOV, Health Check… » vSphere Replication no longer limited to SRM » vSphere Data Recovery replaced by vSphere Data Protection » Fully featured web client to replace vSphere Client » New vCenter Server Single Sign-On » Storage DRS integration with vCloud Director 7
  • 8. The Monster VM gets bigger in 2012 » VM maximum configurations get bigger with vSphere 5.1 » VM scalability has come a long way since ESX 1.0 » Any workload can be virtualized now 8
  • 9. Future Product Announcements » VMware has become more open about future product releases and features » New VMware Horizon Mobile Suite for End User Computing previewed at VMworld » New storage features for next vSphere release also previewed at VMworld » Other tech previews were demonstrated at VMworld » New features often get added early as experimental so customers can preview them before officially supported 9
  • 10. Focus on VDI & Mobile Computing » VMware has long been the king at server virtualization » VMware has been the underdog in client virtualization » Server virtualization is done, client is next » Client virtualization is much more difficult though » VMware’s focus is on the person and not the device » User experience should be the same regardless of the device they use » Apps and data should follow the user around from device to device » Big focus on Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) or how VMware phrases it Spend Your Own Money (SYOM) 10
  • 11. Focus on VDI & Mobile Computing » VMware’s Mobile Virtualization Platform (MVP) vision appears to be dead » New focus on native apps running on phones & tablets and VDI clients, security is a big concern » New VDI vision is called Horizon Suite which combines:  Project Octopus, Project AppBlast, ThinApp, Horizon Application Manager and Horizon Mobile » Beta for Horizon Suite is Q4 2012 » VMware demoed seamless desktop OS upgrade » VMware also showed off iOS Workspace feature which is a collection of apps, services and security policies 11
  • 12. Storage Futures » VMware showed off a technology preview of their future storage architecture for vSphere » There are 3 main components to it:  Virtual Volumes  Virtual SAN  Virtual Flash » Major change and a radically different architecture compared to what it is today 12
  • 13. Storage Futures – Virtual Volumes » Virtual Volumes (vVols) - new architecture for shared storage » No LUN or mount points assigned to datastores anymore » VMDK objects will be managed natively on storage array » Protocol endpoint is a single I/O channel between host and storage array » Storage containers are logical entities that describe physical allocation of space » Uses vendor providers which are array plugins to communicate policies and access to storage containers » Uses VASA as a transport mechanism » Will require new Storage APIs 13
  • 14. Storage Futures – Virtual Flash & SAN » Virtual Flash (vFlash) is a host-based SSD tier presented as a service to speed-up storage I/O » Will be presented as a new type of resource pool » Two deployment models  Transparent caching in data path controlled by hypervisor  Per VM caching that is controlled by VMs » Virtual SAN (vSAN) turns DAS into SAN across multiple hosts » Similar to current vSphere VSA model but will be built natively into the hypervisor instead of a appliance » Targeted at specific use-cases such as VDI, big data or distributed computing environments 14
  • 15. SolarWinds Storage Manager » SolarWinds Storage Manager helps you keep a sharp eye on the performance and capacity of your end-to-end physical and virtual storage infrastructure—from VM to spindle  Monitors storage performance & isolates hotspots in your multi- vendor SAN fabric  Maps virtual machines to physical storage  Automates storage capacity planning & reporting  Simplifies analysis of storage usage & reclamation of storage space  Easy to download, deploy, & use – start monitoring your storage infrastructure in less than an hour » Give your storage the attention that it demands 15
  • 17. VMworld continues to grow » First VMworld held in San Diego in 2004 with 1,400 attendees » VMworld 2012 held in San Francisco with 21,000 attendees » Growth is a testament to the increased popularity of virtualization and VMware’s dominance » May peak soon as Hyper-V becomes more widely adopted 17
  • 18. VMworld 2012 Overview » Theme was Right Here, Right Now – what does it mean?  “This is the time to enter the new cloud era. We are ready. The technology is here. And partners are in place.” » Very heavy focus on VMware’s cloud vision » More focus on cloud products, less focus on core products » Transition from Paul Maritz to Pat Gelsinger was made » No major product releases this time around » Focus was on what’s cooking and coming in the future » Cloud & Software Defined Data Center is the vision » Announcements included 5.1 product releases, licensing changes and mobile computing previews 18
  • 19. vRAM Licensing Change » Controversial Virtual RAM (vRAM) licensing model that VMware introduced in vSphere 5.0 is gone » In addition to CPU socket based licensing, VMware wanted to implement a tax for vRAM usage by VMs » Big uproar from customers over this » vSphere licensing is only CPU socket based again » Why? VMware probably felt the heat from Microsoft with new Windows Server 2012/Hyper-V 3.0 release » Microsoft continues to beat VMware over the head on cost 19
  • 20. Cloud Suite Licensing Changes » vSphere licensed only by CPU socket » Per VM licensing of companion products is gone » vSphere now sold in vCloud Suite bundles » Current Enterprise + licenses can upgrade to vCloud Standard for free » Still can purchase vSphere and other products separately 20
  • 21. Software Defined Data Center » VMware defines a Software Defined Data Center as:  A software-defined datacenter is where all infrastructure is virtualized and delivered as a service, and the control of this datacenter is entirely automated by software. 21
  • 22. Software Defined Data Center » Compute, storage, networking, security, and availability services are pooled, aggregated, and delivered as software, and managed by intelligent, policy-driven software. » Today compute and memory resources are fully virtualized but network and storage resources are largely physical » vSwitches are dumb switches and most of the intelligence is in the physical switch » Same with storage, there are some storage features in vSphere but physical SANs have more intelligence & features » VMware wants to bring that intelligence and management fully into vSphere and dumb down the hardware 22
  • 23. Software Defined Data Center » How will they fulfill the SDDC vision? » Network  Cisco Nexus 1000v delivers more network intelligence to virtual layer, but….it’s not VMware’s technology  Acquisition of software defined networking startup Nicira will provide this so they can build it into their core product along with vShield » Storage  Building more storage intelligence and features into vSphere to turn physical storage into JBODs.  Already mimicking storage array features with Storage DRS, Storage vMotion and Thin Provisioning  New architecture with Virtual Volumes, Virtual SAN and Virtual Flash fill provide this 23
  • 24. Management Needs Continue to Grow in 2012 » Virtual environments becoming increasingly complex » Makes management much more difficult, this is magnified by scale » VMware really pushing vCenter Operations Manager to complement vCenter Server » vCOPs is now bundled into the cloud suites » vCOPS is aimed at the high-end large scale virtual environments » VMware is trying to add to vSphere what 3rd party products have been providing for years 24
  • 25. SolarWinds Virtualization Manager » Much more affordable alternative to vCOPs » SolarWinds Virtualization Manager provides:  Real-time dashboards simplify forecasting, detection, & troubleshooting of capacity bottlenecks  Identifies VM sprawl, helps you reclaim & optimize space, & reduces licensing costs  Tracks VM & host configurations over time & identifies drift from your "gold standard“  All the functionality & more of other leading virtualization management tools – at a fraction of the cost » Best of VMworld winner in Virtualization Management category for 2011 25
  • 27. Wrap-up & Summary » 2012 was a fairly quiet year for VMware, expect next year to be much more exciting » The future is mostly cloudy, get ready for it » VMware showed off a lot of future direction and technology » Will take some time to develop and get to the Software Defined Data Center vision, expect more in 2013 » Big things coming for VDI once VMware finally delivers » The future of storage looks radically different » Licensing changes again, read up on it so you understand it » Management is where it’s at, don’t forget it » Be sure and check out the great products from SolarWinds 27
