Evaulation question 2
1. How does your media
product represent
particular social groups?
2. My magazine represents the social group ‘urban’ amongst
the young generation of the ‘trendies’ group, identified by
UK Tribes, as I have designed the magazine to suit the
needs of this particular social group.
Trendies Urban
3. To ensure that my media
product represented this
specific social group, I
researched into existing female
rappers in the hip-hop music
industry as this was the
character I was aiming to
achieve through my artist. As I
was using a model of a white
ethnicity, this was something
that was vital in trying to
effectively represent the
‘urban’ social group. Iggy
Azalea (right) was the most
suitable artist to take
inspiration from when
considering costume,
appearance, and pose.
4. There were obvious restrictions concerning costume, such as the
limited access to designer clothing, worn by such artists in the
hip-hop genre. Also, there were restrictions to the amount of
skin that could be shown by the model, so the outfit worn by
Iggy Azalea in the picture above would not have been suitable
for photographing and therefore there were limitations to the
images I could use. However, I have incorporated minor details
from shots of Iggy Azalea into the images of my model. For
example, the blonde hair, red lips, dark eyes and overall heavy
make-up was used. Her overall style is similar to my artist, as
well as the style of music, showing that they will have similar
audiences.
5. The photograph style is also
similar across the two images
as they are both side angle
mid-shots modelled against a
blank wall, with the sole focus
on the artist in the shot. Libby
Zarong is presented as a more
‘boyish’ character in her style
whereas Iggy Azalea is
presented as a ‘sexy’ and
‘feminine’ through her costume
and, in this sense, Libby Zarong
appeals more to both genders.
However, both of these artists
would appeal to the Major
magazine audience.
